The first two digits of the electrode coding indicate the minimum tensile strength of the weld metal in thousands of pounds per square inch (psi).
The third digit indicates the welding position(s) for which the electrode is suitable.
The fourth digit indicates the type of coating and the type of welding current (AC, DC, or both) that can be used with the electrode.
The last two digits indicate the specific chemical composition of the electrode.
For example, E7018 electrode coding means that the electrode has a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi, is suitable for all welding positions, has an iron powder low hydrogen coating, and can be used with both AC and DC welding currents.
