The laws of thermodynamics are fundamental principles that govern energy and its transformations.
There are four laws of thermodynamics: zeroth law, first law, second law, and third law.

Talking about marine engines, 2-stroke, slow speed, large bore and long stroke are the most efficient regarding combustion products removal. Not only on this subject, but efficiency at all. For vehicle engines and engines for other purposes this ratio is different and I can't write about.

the 4 stroke engine. A 4 stroke engine draws air in and expels combustion gasses with the movement of the piston without any other mechanical means required
A 2 stroke engine relies on some sort of mechanical means to force combustion air in expelling gasses out of the cylinder or scavenging such as an engine driven blower or using the underside of the piston into a dedicated space or the crankcase

There are basically 2 primary forms supplying combustion air and getting rid of exhaust gasses in a 2 stroke engine, loop and uniflow scavenging with uniflow scavenging being the most efficient. In loop scavenged engines the combustion and exhaust gasses is done through ports on either side close to the bottom of the cylinder and are opened or closed as the piston moves up and down in the cylinder . While in a uniflow engine combustion air is again supplied by ports in the side of the cylinder and exhausted through valves in the cylinder head similar to the valves in a 4 stroke engine. Uniflow engines also have the capacity to vary the exhaust valve timing to allow for more efficient scavenging at varying loads
