My colleagues would sometimes confide in me and tell me their personal problems, because they knew I would keep it to myself. I realised that they needed a sounding board for their pent-up emotions. Once they released the suppressed tension they would get instant relief, and after that they were able to find the solution on their own. There was no need for me to offer any advice or even give suggestions. All I had to do was listen to them patiently and non-judgmentally.
