I feel that I did salary negotiation quite well. Following are the things I did.

I researched the position's budget by connecting with some company employees; for 3i, I found the budget slab on the career page and negotiated accordingly.
I also researched the project for which I am being hired, such as the project budget (which was publicised because it was a government project), and which government body the project will be for. It greatly assisted me in comprehending the nature of the project and how much I could negotiate based on my knowledge and skills required for that project.
I spoke with ex-employees about their experience with government projects, which helped me position myself as an experienced person with e-governance.
