In S.I. engine fuel is burnt with the help of spark (e.g. in case of petrol engine ) while in case of C.I engine fuel is burnt with the help of creating too much pressure which ultimately breaks up the fuel in vapour form as in case of (Diesel Engine ) where fuel pressure increases first with help of Nozzles
