Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There were no written tests conducted. The initial shortlisting was cgpa based. Students (without category) above 8.56 were shortlisted and in the case of category, all students who applied were shortlisted. 2-3 minutes were given for preparing the points and then the GD lasted for around 15-20 minutes. In all 14 students were there in a GD batch. I initiated the discussion saying subsidies should not be given to all the sections but only should be targeted towards the lower income groups. Try to be aggressive and actively take part in the discussion and always try to initiate the discussion as it would definitely make an impression. Try to give statistical data like for example the mfg cost for LPG is around 800/- whereas we are getting it for around 400/- and so on.
Duration: 15 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The interview panel consisted of two people. A HR guy and a technical person. On the technical part, they asked me to design a heat exchanger by giving some basic data, details as in which fluid will be sent through the tubes and why ?. Then they asked me about the effect of Reynolds number inside the exchangers. They asked me about pumps and NPSH. Questions were also asked on vacuum distillation. Why we should do it and what is the principle behind it. How the flashing occurs when it reaches the vacuum, etc. They also asked me questions from my industrial training (maybe because I had done it in the petroleum sector). They asked me about FCCU and important parts of the FCCU, how the catalysts are regenerated and on other units in the refinery. (There might be other questions asked, but I remember only these).

Round: HR Interview
Experience: First they asked about me. Their HR questions were all basically asked from what I had mentioned in my "about me" part. They asked me examples and justifications as to why i felt i had the mentioned qualities. So frame your about me part carefully. They basically tormented me with a zillion questions...like a stress interview (atleast that was how i felt....was a bit of demoralizing...but i think they were just checking as to how i handled and responded to such situations). I was given scenarios and they checked as to how i responded. I guess in the end, the basic thing they were trying to check was the student's communication skills and not whether you are a great team member or a leader, etc.

Skill Tips: I suggest you to prepare on the basic fundamentals of chemical engg. and not formula and equation crunching. Of course you'll need to know the very basic ones. Concentrate more on distillation; pumps, compressors; heat exchangers, heat transfer; petroleum refining. As i said try to be aggressive and make valid and sensible points during the GD. I really would like to add here that i observed most of them talking irrelevant things because they were just eager to TALK. so don't do that. And in the interview observe basic manners (wishing, knocking before entering, etc.) and be calm throughout the interview. and ALL THE BEST TO YOU. DO WELL.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There was no written test. Some 16 students were shortlisted based on CGPA.Six were from SC/St category and rest were from general. No obc or phc category. Two coordinators watched while we discussed the topic. Many people started by supporting no war and at some moments, it was like fish market. I entered the discussion 4 or 5 times with some salient points which directed the discussion. At the end of the GD, i was confident of getting shortlisted for interview.
Duration: 20 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: There were questions on OLTC, fuse, line, phase, neutral of switch board, based on size of Ground wire, p.u impedance of generators or machines. Rest of the questions were based on my project which was on Protection of Transformers, so they drilled me on the subject.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My interview lasted for 30 min.Two persons interviewed me, one for HR,one for Technical.15 min.each(approx). I felt I had impressed them with my HR, I answered all the questions in Technical..Since I did a Project after 3rd year, it came in handy. Panel was friendly.

Skill Tips: 1)If you want to apply for a PSU and you are from general category, see thaat you are in top 15.
2)It would be useful if you have done a project in summer, but then you have to be ready for any question from the project.
3)Have a smile on your face while you interact with the panel. Nobody would like to work with a serious bloke.
4)Be confident in whatever you say. It is okay to lie if you do that confidently and convincingly.
5)If you have GD in selection process, go through some GD tips the day before. It would be handy.
6) Be calm and lose your tension while addressing the panel.
All the Best!
