4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Company 1:   UBS – IT:   First round was a tech interview. Was shaky on the tech part but had my fundamentals on finance clear. Lasted about 25 minutes and made it through the second round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Second round was a tech-cum-HR interview. Was put into situations with ethical dilemmas and asked what I’d do.. (answers should be obvious). Was asked about how I felt working in a multi-ethnic background and was asked most of the basic questions like why should we recruit you, etc, etc.. When it came to the tech part I was paddling up sh** creek without an oar. Coming from an elec background, I knew next to nothing about IT and most of the time was taken up by awkward silences.   2½ th round (if I could call it so): Was sitting lukkha-in-life when the CEO saw me, so he (thinking that I'd feel more entertained) decided to take another interview of mere giving me a case study (screwed up royally) and some questions on probability and logic. Threw a few more HR questions at me..

Round: Other Interview
Experience: 3rd round &; I find myself sitting in front of two pucca Londoners.. and when I say pucca, I mean PUCCA. This bald guy starts asking me stuff in this hyper-weird accent that went totally over my head. Had to stop him and POLITELY ask him to speak a little slower. They were nice chaps though.. they laughed and the rest of the interview was pretty much joking around with the occasional HR or tech question thrown in..   4th round was a simple test basic 5th standard stuff.. (no exaggeration

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Probably the best way to start off is by taking a well formatted resume and building on those lines. Try thinking of everything that you’ve done and then prioritize. Lots of tips on the net on resume writing / sample resumes etc. Vault guides are pretty useful, not only for resume, but for interview prep on the whole. Make sure you send ur resume out to others for suggestions. That’s a good way of improving on it. No need to cram with excess stuff. Keep it plain and simple. Avoid excessive bold / italics etc. Be prepared to be grilled on any point u’ve mentioned. So should know ur resume in and out. I did attend ppt for companies that I was interested in. Ask questions during / after the ppt to have a clear idea of the role being offered. Spoke to a few ppl that knew about the profile that I was interested in, helped in understand the profile. I doubt if you'll be able to pin point what you want, but will definitely help you filter out other options.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Interview 1: with a fixed income trader. Asked me stuff on my resume and why I actually wanted to get into i-banking. Was honest with him that didn't want to continue with tech, and that growth curve is pretty steep. Last but not the least, pretty lucrative career. Asked a little more on my resume. Basic questions.   Then asked me what I knew about i-banking. Was pretty satisfied that I had a general sense of what it was all about. Then probed into my finance knowledge. Asked me a few questions on how to price bonds etc. Risks associated with bonds. Eg if interest rate rises / falls how does it affect. Asked me a few questions on options. Simple call / put payoff curves, and then gave me a combination of calls / puts and asked for the payoff. Basic stuff not very complicated. Then general conversation. Very relaxing interview!

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Interview 2 & MD of fixed income Asia &; Pacific. Directly started off with particular points on my resume. Had done a course project, so asked a bit on that. Asked if I was ok answering finance questions. Said yes. Asked me what options are. How do they work. Gave me two scenarios &; one risky asset, one non-risky asset. Which call option would be more expensive? Which put option would be more expensive? Got slightly confused here, but pulled back in the end. Asked me to roughly estimate future foreign exchange rate if interest rates of two currencies are given. The interview was over before I knew it. Asked if I had any questions. I had a few which he answered for a good 5-10 minutes. Think that saved the day!

Round: Other Interview
Experience: Interview 3:  As soon as I sat down, asked me to estimate the volume of the room. In cubic meters. Then cubic feet. Then cubic inches. Made one calculation mistake with the order of magnitude, but was otherwise reasonably quick. Then asked me to calculate the number of matches in a 128 player KO tennis tournament. Its pretty simple to sum it up, but with such questions, they're looking for a short-cut. Asked me a puzzle on a camel which has to cross a desert and transport a maximum number of bananas. Some constraints don't exactly remember. I had heard this so was asked another one. There are 20 prisoners. Each of them has a number on the back between 1-20. There can be more than one prisoner with the same number. Prisoners meet to discuss (before numbers are placed on their backs) a strategy such that at least one can guess their number correctly. They do not meet again. Asked me to come up with the strategy.   Was given exactly 3mins to get this. Then moved on to resume. Asked in detail about internship. Again why i-banking. Few HR questions such as to what drives you, instance when you did not achieve your target. Asked me that if I had a good trade idea, sales ppl do not accept it, what would I do. Could have answered this one better. But had done reasonably well otherwise. Asked me my preference between HK and Singapore. I had a couple of questions and that's about it. Didn't even realize that I had been inside for 45 mins.

General Tips: Well, some basic fin background helps in my opinion. Although UBS didn't expect much fin from me, but helped me to convey enthu. Can work for you if you can pull off the questions. Otherwise practice a few puzzles, calculation based numericals etc. And like any other interview & your resume and HR. Should have a few questions in the bag to ask.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Overall strength of the profile was assessed. Not much emphasis was put on CPI.
Tips: Having an experience in finance is a plus.

Round: Stress Interview
Experience: Lot of questions were asked on resume, work done in general, questions on answers I was giving.
Tips: I don't think any specific preparation can be done for this kind of interview. Being confident about your answer is the only way to crack this kind of interview. Questions as varied as 'Why Steve Jobs is cooler than Bill Gates' or 'What's the capital of Uganda' were asked, because my profile/answer had such references.
Don't bullshit, don't tremble and you will good to go!

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Since we are from Technical institute and not a finance institute, interviewers didn't expect much from us. Through questions, they were judging our motivation towards work. Questions like why finance, why Credit Suisse etc. were asked to see general motivation levels towards finance.

1 Interview Round

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: UBS had shortlisted about 12 candidates. Out of which 5 were shortlisted after round 2, final offer was made to only 1 candidate.
Round 1: Was asked only 2 questions: Why IB? Why UBS? I coudnt answer both satisfactorily as I never wanted banking. At the same time I was not very formal. Always remember that banks DO NOT tolerate informality at ALL! Round 2: He was American and was basically testing my communication/leadership skills. He asked me to explain my DDP in plain English. He asked me about my interest in Development Economics. He also asked me about my GOA trip..FINALLY! At the end of the two rounds, I think, UBS realized that I wasn't really interested in IB. I wasn't shortlisted further.
