5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Quickly sped through the test since I had enough aptitude practice. Left only one question unanswered
Tips: Practice aptitude (absolutely crucial, no other way around this)
The website pariksha.co would be a good place to start.
Also very important to have attempted enough mock aptitude tests to see how much of a chance you stand amongst your peers
Duration: 1 hour
Total Questions: 30

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: Started off with the standard 'tell me about yourself' question and 'Why analytics?'.
Then we moved on to a simple case. I had to put myself in the shoes of a supermarket owner having only one billing counter. I had to list down all possible factors that could possibly influence me into setting up more billing counters (say 3 or 4 more counters). I listed a powerful factor right off the bat. I then had to take a little guidance from the interviewer (who was very friendly btw) who helped me arrive at 3 more factors.
Then we moved on to the puzzle. I had solved it long ago and had found its solution to be one of the least intuitive ones I had come across, I couldn't remember the solution though. So i started by explaining my logic. Then with a little bit of guidance, was able to arrive at the final answer.
Then he looked at my resume and found that I had mentioned some analytics project in it. He started grilling me on that. Since I wasn't conversant with the math behind one of the algorithms I had used, I wasn't able to answer questions on those. He then asked me questions on another algorithm which I was able to answer pretty well.
Then before finishing up, he invited questions. I asked some good questions which he was impressed by.
Tips: Interviewers are pretty friendly and that helps vent out any pressure. Consider the interviews as friendly interactions rather than grilling sessions.
Have mock interviews with one of your friends on basic HR questions. It'll help build confidence as the day of the interview approaches

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: Started off with the interviewer asking why I wanted to get into EXL.
Then we moved on to the more technical part. He asked me which algorithms I was comfortable with. I mentioned neural networks as I was working on it as part of my Dual Degree Project. He then asked me some basic questions on neural networks (that also required some knowledge of the famous bias-variance concept) which I was able to answer pretty well.
He then moved on to questions from a course I had mentioned. We had some discussion on that question but I wasn't able to get to what he wanted to hear. But he left it at that and moved on to the next part.
Then I was asked which one I preferred more: working on projects that were hardcore technical data analysis, or rather qualitative business problems where you derive insights qualitatively. I preferred the first one and said that. I was then asked what I would do if I was assigned projects of the second type, my reply to which the interviewer found convincing enough.
He then invited questions to wrap up the interview. My questions here were again very impressive I guess. This part actually constituted one-fourth of my interview time. We had discussions at length
Tips: Again, do not let any pressure get to you. Interviewers from EXL might probably be one of the friendliest bunches you will ever come across.
Having those mock interviewers is crucial in building confidence
One thing I forgot to mention - they will test if you're someone who is planning to go for higher studies or MBA or something else of the sort. So, if you are planning to do that, make sure you have a good answer to convince them you're not going to ditch them

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: CGPA based shortlisting. I think there was a cut-off of 7.5.
Tips: CGPA is very important. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Try and maintain above 8.5 to get shortlisted for most companies.

Round: Test
Experience: Math section involved a few puzzles and a few quantitative aptitude based questions. Programming section tested only the basics. It was language agnostic for the most part but a few questions were based on C. Finance section was probably designed to test your ability to learn new topics quickly. You could answer almost all the questions even without knowing finance as the underlying concept of the problem was explained in a paragraph above the question.
Tips: Practice Quant. Review syntax, data structures and algorithms for the programming section. Read 'DayOne' book's finance section for the finance part.
Duration: 2 hours
Total Questions: 30

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: The interview panel had two people. They were warm and welcoming. Started off with my introduction and some resume based questions. Was asked about my internship at Indian School of Business and my Dual Degree Project. Then a few coding questions and the interview ended with questions on finance.
Tips: Make sure that you project your capabilities well in Math, Programming or Finance.

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: All the employees (around 10 people) who came for the interviews were present in the room. It was slightly intimidating in the beginning to face so many interviewer. But they were really friendly and the interview went pretty well.
Tips: Refer 64 HR Questions book for HR preparation. Don't read the answers but use the questions to prepare your answers.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume shortlist, I feel, was slightly unfair. They had put a cut-off of 9 for branches outside EE/CS.
Tips: Don't worry, they might not follow this next year. Your resume should have a mix of probability, finance (courses on these are enough, though internships will really help)

They don't care about your PoRs in the interview, but this may matter for the resume shortlist (Assuming it's done fairly) So be sure to include them.

Round: Test
Experience: There were 30 MCQ questions, 10 each on the above mentioned sections. There is no dearth of time, so you can think clearly and solve the question. I found that quant was the hardest of the lot, followed by coding followed by ML.

ML questions will be on SVMs, ANNs, Ensemble learning methods, Hypothesis testing, Feature selection, Model selection etc. the standard topics you can find in "Elements of Statistical Learning" by Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman.

The coding section was mostly on arrays, data structures (binary tree, mostly), recursion, and one subjective question.

For quant, you need to be really well versed in probability, definite integrals (Not kidding), and other JEE math.
Tips: You'll need to do really well in atleast one of the sections to be shortlisted. Even if you are non CS/EE, (assuming you don't have experience in coding) you can do really well in ML section. Aim for that and prepare in advance. Once you are through to the interview, you just need to give them a reason to hire you. :)
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The lady who interviewed me was a chemE graduate from IIT Bombay. She was friendly and willing to help when asked about a problem. Overall, very good interview experience.
Tips: For all interviews, I'll say this. Ask a lot of questions. They are very interested in explaining what they do, and feel free to interrupt them if you don't understand something. Always try to relate what they say to your interest. That way you'll bring new perspective into the interview. And that's very useful, believe me. If they have shortlisted you, they want to hire you. You just have to give them a reason to. Always relate your experiences and your interests with what they do. if you do that, they will find a role for you, somewhere. Do not worry. I was interested in machine learning and I got a finance profile. (They have a team in that profile that does ML)

For quant questions, I would suggest thinking out loud and interacting each step of the way. They care more about your thinking than about the answer. They will point out the errors and you can correct them. Don't worry about silences, as long as you think out loud, it will not be a problem.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Again, very friendly interview. The interviewer will lead you on, and assist you if you're facing any difficulty. :) Just be sure to be jovial and interactive.
Tips: Same as above.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Very technical, serious interview. I think he was the senior guy. He still helped out a lot.
Tips: Be to the point, he was more interested in the technical knowledge.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The final interview I had. He was very helpful, and was very eager to talk about the company and what they do. He had an extensive knowledge of finance, options (obviously). The course on Mathematical Finance by the maths department was very useful. You need to have a good knowledge of options for getting through this.
Tips: Same as the first interview.
