The day I found out my colleague earns 30% more for the same role
It was an accidental slip. A teammate mentioned her CTC while we were chatting casually. Same designation, same team, joined after me but her salary was almost 30% more. My stomach dropped. I spent days debating whether to bring it up. I didn’t want to come off as insecure or difficult. But I also couldn’t un-know what I knew. Eventually, I had an honest, data-backed conversation with my manager. Turns out, I was right and they revised my pay. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me this: silence doesn’t protect you. Companies run on numbers. If you don’t negotiate, you leave money on the table. Have you ever been in a similar spot? How did you navigate it?

The owner is a renowned Structural Engineer in the state of Kerala. He is a great academician, mentor and team leader with unparalleled analytical skills and knowledge. Hence, the scope to learn and develop our skills as an entry level Structural engineer is tremendous. The work environment is unlike that of a corporate field, where there are internal politics, strife and back stabbing, which you don't find here. The technical team is small and works like a family, helping and enlightening each other about any issue that might pop up during work. For freshers - it's an absolutely perfect place to learn the trade as apprentices and leave the firm for a better opportunity that would help them run a family and meet the daily sustenance expenditures and also to have proper career growth.

The monthly pay had been pending for all the employees while I exited. The pending dues were not just a mere month's salary but close 10-11 months for all of us, which roughly sums up to a few lakhs (INR) per employee. The proprietor of the firm would keep giving apology speeches intermittently and throw empty promises that all the pending dues would be cleared in a month's time or two and the salaries of all employees (numbering to just 7 of us) would be "regularised", as a few "mega projects" are in the pipeline. Well, the "mega projects" never came by and the pending dues kept accumulating. So why did all the employees wait and work for so long without getting paid? The answers - 1.The owner would cunningly distribute a small fraction of the dues to every employee sporadically along with his typical apology-speeches and hope-reviving promises, but still keep a huge amount pending so that we don't even think of quitting the company at once; 2.All of us were committed enough to work our fingers to the bone to get the projects completed in a time-bound manner, so as to (like the owner would tell us time and again, totidem verbis), "at least receive payments from the existing clients that would help in clearing our dues". In retrospect, now we all realise well enough that he was exploiting us. One of us finally tendered his resignation as he was in abject financial misery owing to all this. Sadly, he was neither given a single penny from his pending dues (stating that he had not fulfilled the very important 3 months notice period) nor an experience certificate. So why didn't we take the legal route and file a case against him? Well, he never gave any of us a valid legal document to do so, like an offer letter stating our monthly pay, exit policies, notice period, or a salary slip (as he would often pay us in cash); all of these were verbal assurances. We were not even issued an ID Card. So that's why.

I have been working with this organisation for the past 21 years. I had learned the fundamental and practical design and detailing of many structures after joining this company. I have a good work environment and work culture, here. Even though the company was undergoing tough times during COVID period without projects, we were paid by the company. I have had multiple chances to be a part of major projects including airports, bridges and high rise buildings. The company always promoted the high and quality performers.

Very strict target dates for the works and work disciplines. Hence there have been cases of early and late hours working.
