Arm drops legal fight to revoke Qualcomm's chip license
- Arm has dropped its legal fight to revoke Qualcomm's chip license, allowing Qualcomm to continue producing its custom Arm-compatible chips.
- Qualcomm's latest financial report confirms that Arm no longer seeks to terminate the Architecture License Agreement (ALA).
- This resolution enables Qualcomm to proceed with its Arm-based product lines, including the Snapdragon X CPUs for laptops and Snapdragon 8 Elite SoCs for high-end smartphones.
- The lawsuit originated from Qualcomm's acquisition of Nuvia, a startup with an ALA allowing it to design Arm-compatible CPU cores. Arm argued that Nuvia couldn't transfer its designs to Qualcomm without prior approval.

Arm gives up on killing off Qualcomm's vital chip license
- Arm has agreed that one of its crucial licenses with Qualcomm would not be terminated, giving the latter the freedom to continue making custom chips for phones, servers and PCs.
- In this regard, the British company had tried to cut off the license in a legal dispute against Qualcomm in 2022 when Qualcomm acquired the startup Nuvia.
- Nuvia had been using Arm-based architecture license agreements that allow the firm to design its own Arm-compatible CPU cores. The remarkable performance of Nuvia’s CPU blueprints was so good that Qualcomm decided to buy the company.
- However, Arm complained that Nuvia didn't have the authority to share its Arm-derived designs with Qualcomm, and demanded that Nuvia CPU blueprints be destroyed and that Qualcomm compensation be paid. In fact, after a jury's decision which mostly favored Qualcomm, Arm has withdrawn its request to terminate the Qualcomm Architecture License Agreement.
- At Qualcomm's Q1 2025 earnings conference, CEO Cristiano Amon confirmed that Arm has no plan to terminate Qualcomm's license agreement.
- In fact, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Series and Snapdragon 8 Elite SoCs will continue to feature Oryon custom CPUs, the same powerful architecture used by Samsung on its flagship Galaxy S25 smartphones going forward.
- Arm expects to continue receiving payments from Qualcomm, which will continue to license various technologies from Arm.
- Although Qualcomm has welcomed the availability of small-but-powerful large language models (LLMs), Arm says such models' demand is outpacing the capabilities of today's smartphone chips.
- Arm will work to develop products faster so that smartphone device-makers can harness the potential of on-device LLMs.
- Qualcomm recorded $11.7 billion in revenue, an 18% YoY increase, for the quarter to December 29, 2024. Arm's revenue was $983 million, up 18% YoY, while net income was $252 million.

Qualcomm wins landmark trial against Arm in chip license dispute
- Qualcomm has won a landmark trial against Arm Holdings in a chip license dispute.
- The trial centered on Qualcomm's acquisition of Nuvia and the use of Arm's chip architecture.
- The jury found that Qualcomm did not violate the terms of its agreement with Arm.
- However, the jury could not reach a consensus on whether Nuvia had violated its license agreement with Arm.

Arm lawsuit against Qualcomm ends in mistrial and favorable ruling for Qualcomm
- Arm Holdings sued Qualcomm over a licensing agreement breach.
- The jury could not reach a conclusion on one allegation and ruled in favor of Qualcomm on another.
- Qualcomm's chips, created using Nuvia's technology, were found to be properly licensed.
- Arm intends to seek a retrial due to the jury's deadlock.

Ex-Nuvia founder claims Qualcomm chips use minimal Arm tech in high-stakes trial
- Former Apple executive Gerard Williams III testified in a high-stakes trial between Arm and Qualcomm.
- The trial is focused on the ownership of intellectual property in chip design.
- Williams revealed that Nuvia's Qualcomm Oryon cores used minimal Arm technology, estimating one percent or less.
- The trial outcome could have significant implications for the semiconductor industry and impact Qualcomm's competition in the laptop market.

Arm and Qualcomm kick off trial over AI PC chips
- Arm and Qualcomm have started a trial over AI PC chips dispute.
- The legal battle centers around Qualcomm's license agreement for using Arm's intellectual property and Qualcomm's acquisition of Nuvia.
- Arm claims Qualcomm used Nuvia's designs without permission, while Qualcomm argues it owns the rights and accuses Arm of trying to stifle competition.
- Expected witnesses include executives from Arm, Qualcomm, and Nuvia.
