Scout's Home State Blocks Direct EV Sales. This Bill Might Change That
- EV maker Scout Motors broke ground on its $2 billion electric vehicle plant in South Carolina in 2020, with the facility set to produce EV and EREV trucks and SUVs by 2027-28. However, state legislation currently prevents car manufacturers selling directly to customers in the US, with Scour joining rivals Tesla and Rivian in lobbying for such bans to be lifted. The traditional dealership business model may be hostile to the adoption of EVs; data analytics firm CDK Global found that while conventional dealers are more likely to push gas-guzzlers, it is from lack of understanding about and education in the benefits of EVs.
- South Korean battery giants are experiencing a sales slump due to production cuts, regulatory uncertainties and a COVID-fueled downturn. Hyundai and its battery supplier LG Chem are reeling from the effects of heavy investments in hydrogen fuel cell infrastructure, but the former is aiming to ramp up EV production significantly over the next five years.
- In China, meanwhile, EV dynamo Tesla has seen its sales fall sharply, by 11.5% for China-made EVs compared to the same period last year. Tesla's latest model, the Model Y, will have the challenge of reinvigorating US sales of said vehicles.
- Carmakers are fighting with the National Automobile Dealers Association as they attempt to bypass traditional dealership models in favour of haggle-free online sales. However, traditional dealerships remain an important pillar in the industry, particularly as they have access to an existing roster of customers for automakers to target with their new offerings.
- Scout is trying to amend state and/or federal laws to allow it to sell EVs, beginning with a bill in its home state of South Carolina. Its proposed online-only process could put pressure on the traditional dealerships that have been accused of turning away from EV sales due to a lack of education and understanding.
- Scout and Sony Honda Mobility are hoping to sell EVs directly to consumers, while Hyundai and LG Chem have suffered from heavy investments in hydrogen fuel cells but aim to increase EV production. Carmakers may bypass dealers but would lose the benefit of these firms' established relationship with customers.
- Last year was the hottest since record-keeping began, and the EV industry is under increasing pressure to transition through the electrification of transport to help reduce carbon emissions and climate change.
- Dealerships face a rising shift in EV adoption, and it is largely due to the lack of understanding of the benefits of EVs among sales staff. Traditional car dealers have prioritized sales of gas-guzzlers because they bring in recurring service income and have so far been easier to sell at a profit.
- Jim Farley, Ford's current CEO, mentioned that he is unsure about the role of dealers in the transition to EVs.
- KSIX Media Holdings says its wholly owned subsidiary, KSIX, has ended the 2020 year with over $458k in gross sales.
- Chinese battery and EV maker BYD said on Thursday that it has agreed to supply customers worldwide with a new, low voltage platform, following the formation of a new working relationship with Italian inverter manufacturer FIMER. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the firm has agreed to become the battery supplier for Brazilian startup, nH EV.

The Ionna Charging Network Will Get Amazon’s AI Grocery Store Tech
- Automaker-backed charging firm Ionna has launched its first "Rechargery" in North Carolina and is aiming to be one of the heavyweights in the industry with backing from BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis and Toyota.
- Ionna has contracted for over 100 sites in multiple locations including Houston, Texas; Abilene, Kansas and Willcox, Arizona, while the new Rechargeries will implement Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology to allow for automatic cashier-less payments at stations.
- The system uses an AI-powered solution for automatic payments at convenience stores, while the Rechargeries will implement a canopy covering the charging stalls, on-site restrooms, lounges and food and drink options.
- Ionna has announced that it plans to have 30,000 charging ports across the country by 2030 that will support both Combined Charging Standard (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) vehicles.
- Its stations' food options will range from partner Rechargeries like Sheetz to bare-bones sites that only have restrooms, lounges, canopies and food options “when possible”.
- Ionna sees itself as solving some of the biggest pain points with charging, and aims to offer all visitors a comprehensive charging and leisure experience.
- Just Walk Out technology will be rolled out as Ionna begins the next phase of its nationwide charging network rollout.
- The technology uses an array of cameras and sensors to feed an AI program, which identifies what items you pick up and removes the need for a cashier or self-checkout machines.
- The new tech rollout comes as Amazon just Walk Out phased out in its own Amazon Fresh stores, instead announcing that it would license it to third-party companies.
- It is initially planned for implementation at the North Carolina station and there is no confirmation yet regarding its implementation in other sites.
