As early as 1929, Joseph Christie Whitney Frazer from Baltimore / USA recognized the advantages of the metal carrier and had his developments in this area patented in the same year. Since the automotive industry was convinced of the great advantages of metal catalysts, numerous automobile manufacturers have supported all attempts to use steel foils as carriers for decades. Many engineers failed to implement it. Only employees of the Siemens subsidiary Interatom, who were very familiar with the joining of high-strength materials, finally had the desired success. The EMITEC Gesellschaft für Emissionstechnologie mbH was founded. The two material variants metal (left in the picture) and ceramic dominate the market for basic components (monoliths) for catalysts. However, METALIT catalysts have numerous advantages, such as lower heat capacity, lower exhaust gas back pressure, and thanks to their turbulence-generating profiles , they are much more efficient - up to 30% with comparable parameters.
