In a world of excess, Dubai holds court as the crown prince. Dubai World is a holding company that manages some 90 entities owned by the oil-rich government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Its portfolio expands beyond the Middle East, with holdings across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Investments are focused on four main areas: transportation and logistics, drydocks and maritime, urban development, and financial services. Some of its holdings include global marine terminal operator DP World, luxury real estate developer Nakheel, and even a 20% stake in Cirque du Soleil. Unable to meet its debt repayments on time, Dubai World restructured some $24.9 billion of debt in late 2010.
