The international law firm -- which has 2,300 lawyers in about 35 offices spanning three continents -- specializes in advising on banking, international capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, tax, and other corporate legal issues. Clients have included BT Group, Equitable Life Assurance Society, Merrill Lynch, Shell Chemicals, Standard Chartered, UBS, and Virgin Mobile. Allen & Overy also advises private clients on commercial trust, partnership, property, and tax issues. Founded in 1930 by George Allen and Thomas Overy, the firm made a name for itself in 1936 doing work for King Edward VIII during his abdication.
