Summary:
The Special Educator / SEN Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs. This role requires a deep understanding of various special education needs, including but not limited to: learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and emotional/behavioral disorders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs):
Conduct assessments and evaluations to determine students' strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth.
Develop and implement IEPs that address individual student needs and align with educational standards.
Collaborate with parents, other educators, and related service providers to ensure effective IEP implementation.
Provide direct instruction and support:
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and accommodations to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
Provide individual and small group instruction to support academic, social, and emotional development.
Create and utilize a variety of instructional materials, including visual aids, manipulatives, and technology.
Manage student behavior and create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Communicate and collaborate:
Maintain regular communication with parents regarding student progress and concerns.
Collaborate with other educators, including general education teachers, therapists, and counselors.
Participate in IEP meetings, case conferences, and other relevant meetings.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records.
Professional Development:
Stay current on best practices in special education and inclusive education.
Attend professional development workshops and conferences.
Participate in school-based professional development activities.
Create an Inclusive Classroom:
Promote a positive and inclusive classroom environment that celebrates diversity.
Advocate for the needs of students with disabilities.
Collaborate with general education teachers to create an inclusive learning environment for all students.
