They play a critical role in ensuring the production of high-quality products by creating and maintaining tools that meet strict specifications and tolerances.
Responsibilities:
Tool and Die Design: Design, plan, and draft blueprints for tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures using computer-aided design (CAD) software or traditional drafting methods.
Tool Fabrication: Build and assemble tools, dies, and fixtures using various machining and fabrication techniques, including milling, turning, grinding, and CNC machining.
Precision Measurement: Utilize precision measuring instruments and gauges to verify and maintain tight tolerances and dimensions on the tools being produced.
Maintenance and Repair: Perform maintenance, repair, and modification of existing tools and dies to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Quality Control: Inspect and test tools and components for quality, functionality, and durability. Make necessary adjustments and repairs as needed.
Material Selection: Choose appropriate materials for tool construction based on the requirements of the project, such as hardness, heat resistance, and wear resistance.
Documentation: Maintain detailed records, including design drawings, material specifications, and work orders, to ensure traceability and documentation of the tool-making process.
Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, machinists, and other team members to understand project requirements and provide input on tool design and improvement.
