Natural Catastrophe Specialist (Atmospheric or Earthquake Perils)

We are looking for people with Doctoral /postgraduate degree with 4+ years of relevant industrial experience and strong academic record for our natural catastrophe modelling team. The Opportunity
The catastrophe perils ("Cat Perils") department is responsible for Swiss Re s global natural catastrophe (nat cat) risk assessment. The department advances groundbreaking probabilistic and proprietary modeling technology for atmospheric perils, earthquakes, and flood hazards, with a clear business directive to grow Swiss Re s driven edge in close partnership with underwriters and clients.
You will be embedded in a team of 50 members, located in Zurich, New York, and Bangalore which covers a wide range of specializations in natural science, engineering and statistics fields. As a Nat Cat Specialist, your focus will be leading and contributing on the modeling of atmospheric or earthquake perils and advising underwriters/client managers on various nat cat topics. You get in-depth exposure to Swiss Res proprietary natural perils model platform and to reinsurance business. You are encouraged to widen your responsibilities over time including working across perils and special topics such as climate change, claims inflation, secondary perils, and exposure analytics.
Main tasks / activities / responsibilities:
Application of expertise in one or more of nat cat perils such as cyclone, severe thunderstorms, floods, and earthquakes in developing risk view for various regions.
Development of different model components (e.g., setting up model framework, generating hazard event set, hazard footprints, vulnerability functions), including calibration and validation.
Partnering with underwriters on nat cat topics in their markets, with the goal to steer Swiss Re nat cat portfolio to sustainable and profitable business.
Analysis of real time nat cat events to assess their impact on Swiss Re business and incorporation of key learnings in models in a swift manner.
Documentation of the research work and results in an organized and timely manner.
About You
An advanced degree in the field of Atmospheric Perils/Water Resources Engineering / Hydrology / Earthquake Engineering / or a field which is closely related to these subject areas.
Strong programming experience, preferably with MATLAB or Python, and experience in using GIS tools.
Experience in probabilistic event-based modelling in the context of developing nat cat models.
Ability to collaborate and lead projects effectively in a global team setting with multiple stakeholders.
Flair to implement ideas in a pragmatic and agile manner.
Strong motivation to learn about re/insurance business.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Above all: scientific and financial curiosity combined with the ability to work independently on various R&D projects while at ease with teamwork and communication in a global setting.
