The Pharmacy Head & Pharmacist is responsible for overseeing and managing the pharmacy department's operations, ensuring safe and efficient pharmaceutical care. The individual will supervise pharmacy staff, manage inventory, collaborate with healthcare teams, provide patient counseling, and ensure adherence to regulatory and quality standards. The Pharmacy Head & Pharmacist will also play a vital role in the strategic planning and development of the pharmacy services and ensure the well-being of patients through effective medication management. Key Responsibilities: 1. Leadership & Department Management
Lead, manage, and oversee the daily operations of the pharmacy department. Supervise and support pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and assistants. Ensure the proper staffing and scheduling of the pharmacy team to meet patient needs. Conduct performance evaluations for pharmacy staff, provide guidance and mentoring, and foster a collaborative work environment. Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure effective, high-quality pharmacy services.
2. Medication Management & Dispensing
Oversee the safe, accurate, and timely dispensing of medications to patients. Review and verify prescriptions for correctness and appropriateness based on patient conditions. Counsel patients regarding their prescriptions, including proper usage, potential side effects, and drug interactions. Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications, in compliance with regulatory standards. Review and manage medication orders and ensure timely stock replenishment to avoid shortages.
3. Inventory Control & Procurement
Manage the pharmacy inventory, ensuring stock levels are appropriate for the needs of the facility. Oversee procurement and purchasing of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and over-the-counter medications. Maintain relationships with suppliers to ensure the availability of necessary drugs and supplies at competitive prices. Monitor and manage medication expiration dates, and implement measures to minimize waste. Conduct regular inventory audits to ensure accuracy and compliance with inventory management policies.
4. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
Ensure that the pharmacy complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., pharmaceutical regulations, healthcare policies, and guidelines). Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes and ensure that the pharmacy practices meet the required standards. Conduct regular inspections and audits to ensure compliance with internal and external quality standards. Implement and monitor infection control, medication safety practices, and error prevention measures. Report any medication-related incidents, near-misses, or adverse drug reactions to the appropriate authorities.
5. Collaboration & Patient Care
Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other medical staff, to optimize patient care. Participate in interdisciplinary care team meetings and provide medication therapy management (MTM) support to ensure optimal drug therapy outcomes. Educate patients on proper medication usage, possible side effects, and lifestyle modifications related to their treatment. Provide specialized pharmaceutical care to inpatients and outpatients, ensuring their treatment plans are personalized and effective. Offer counseling and support to patients regarding chronic disease management and wellness programs.
6. Strategic Planning & Development
Develop and implement strategies to improve the pharmacy services and ensure better patient outcomes. Participate in budget planning, cost control, and financial management for the pharmacy department. Identify areas for improvement and implement best practices in pharmaceutical care, inventory management, and customer service. Stay updated with advancements in pharmacology, new medications, and treatment protocols to integrate into practice. Conduct research and contribute to the development of evidence-based practice within the pharmacy field.
7. Training & Development
Provide continuous training and professional development opportunities for pharmacy staff. Mentor and guide junior pharmacists and pharmacy students through their internships or training periods. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in pharmacy practices and ensure the team is informed of new guidelines, drugs, or therapies. Foster a culture of continuous learning, ensuring all team members are equipped with current knowledge and skills.
Bachelors degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from a recognized institution. Masters degree in Pharmacy or related field is an advantage. Valid licensure as a Pharmacist in the relevant region or country.
