Role Description of Nuclear Medicine/ PET CT Technologist
1. Administer radiopharmaceuticals or radiation intravenously to detect or treat diseases, using radioisotope equipment, under direction of a doctor.
2. Detect and map radiopharmaceuticals in patients bodies, using a camera to produce photographic or computer images.
3. To perform quality control methods of the system to produce a computer generated or film image and to ensure quality of the images obtained for interpretation by a doctor.
4. Calculate, measure and record radiation dosage or radiopharmaceuticals received, used and disposed using computer and following physician’s prescription.
5. Perform quality control checks on laboratory equipment or cameras.
6. Maintain and calibrate radioisotope and laboratory equipment.
7. Dispose of radioactive materials and store radiopharmaceuticals, following radiation safety procedures.
8. Process cardiac function studies, using computer.
9. Prepare stock radiopharmaceuticals, adhering to safety standards that minimize radiation exposure to workers and patients.
10. Record and process results of procedure.
11. Explain test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provide them with assistance procedures for therapy.
12. Gather information in patient’s illnesses and medical history to guide the choice of diagnostic procedures for therapy.
13. Measure glandular activity, blood volume, red cell survival or radioactivity of patient, using scanners, Geiger counters, scintillometers, or other laboratory equipment.
14. Train and supervise student or subordinate technologists.
15. Position radiation fields, radiation beams, and patient to allow for most effective treatment of patient’s disease, using computer.
16. Add radioactive substances to biological specimens, such as blood, urine, or feces to determine therapeutic drug or hormone levels.
17. To ensure that the radiation safety is followed in the department.
18. To check the patient list and order for the 18F-FDG
19. To maintain radiation survey and radio pharmacy records up to date.
20. Read the request form and guided the patient accordingly.
21. Check all patient information like name, age, history etc. and check that the investigation ordered is clear.
22. Ensure maintenance of all records i.e. patient’s reports, investigations done, number of films used.
23. Waste control for films.
24. Any other work as assigned by seniors.
Qualifications
B. Sc / M.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine.
Proficiency in Nuclear Medicine procedures and Radiopharmaceutical handling
Knowledge of Radiation Safety protocols
Medical background or relevant qualification
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Experience in a clinical setting is a plusRole & responsibilities
