Role & responsibilities
Job Description:
1. Blood Collection:
Collecting blood from volunteer donors through various methods, such as whole blood donation or apheresis (where specific blood components like platelets or plasma are collected). Donor care post blood donation. Providing adequate hydration, supine position, refreshments (snacks as per hospitals policy) to blood donor post donation. Management of Adverse Donor Reaction along with Medical Officer and Nursing staff.
2. Donor Screening:
Conducting pre-donation health assessments, including reviewing medical histories, assessing vital signs and ensuring donors meet eligibility criteria.
3. Blood Separation:
Using centrifugation equipment to separate whole blood into its various components, including red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
4. Blood Testing:
Performing a series of tests on blood samples to ensure their safety and compatibility for transfusion, including blood typing, cross-matching and screening for infectious diseases (e.g., HIV, hepatitis).
5. Storage and Labeling:
Properly storing blood and blood products at the correct temperatures and ensuring that they are labeled accurately, including blood type, expiration date and donor information.
6. Component Preparation:
Preparing blood components for transfusion, such as filtering, centrifuging and irradiating blood products as needed.
7. Transfusion Support:
Preparing and issuing blood and blood products for transfusion according to physician orders and ensuring proper documentation and traceability.
8 Quality Control:
Conducting routine quality control tests on equipment and reagents to maintain the accuracy and reliability of blood testing and processing.
9. Emergency Response:
Being prepared to respond to emergency situations, such as mass casualties or natural disasters, to ensure an adequate supply of blood is available for patients.
11. Data Recording:
Accurately documenting all activities and test results in patient records and laboratory information systems.
12. Safety Protocols:
Adhering to strict safety protocols to minimize the risk of contamination and infection in the blood bank.
13. Regulatory Compliance:
Ensuring that all blood bank operations comply with regulatory requirements and standards, including those set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States.
14. Equipment Maintenance:
Maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, such as blood analyzers, refrigeration units and centrifuges.
15. Patient Interaction:
Providing information and support to patients and their families regarding blood transfusions, potential risks and the importance of informed consent.
16. To Perform Blood Donor Apheresis procedures
To perform Blood Donor Apheresis procedure for donation of various blood components such as Platelets, Plasma, Red Cells, Granulocytes, Peripheral Blood Haematopoietic Stem Cells or as per requirement.
17. To Perform Therapeutic Apheresis Procedure
To perform Therapeutic Apheresis Procedures (such as Therapeutic Plasma Exchange, Therapeutic Platelet Reduction, Therapeutic Leucapheresis, Therapeutic Red Cell Exchange etc) as per advised by Consultant Transfusion Medicine and/or treating physician
