Job Introduction.
A Senior Journalist on the News team will be expected to commission, edit and publish accurate, pithy news stories and features about India with flair and context.
You will have a love of news, sharp editing and rewriting skills and a thoughtful approach to how we tell a story.
Main Responsibilities.
You will help identify news priorities and opportunities, and help shape the key stories of the day for digital audiences.
You will also be asked to lead news shifts on certain days.
This will involve setting up the agenda of the day and assigning stories (both text and video) to other members of the team.
You will take overall responsibility of the output while leading the news agenda.
This will involve editing, rewriting and publish news stories and features on the BBC News website.
Tasks will also range from writing quick breaking news stories to chasing leads and unexplored angles for high-impact features and videos.
We want journalists who can monitor social media, search trends and audience data and use that to improve our storytelling and help us reach new audiences.
You will also be responsible for our output on social media from scripting to overseeing video production to writing and editing creative posts to boost our reach.
You should have a good understanding of analysing audience data both on the website and social media platforms.
Your understanding should help the team come up with strategies to maximise reach.
You might be asked to run a small team of journalists working on the social desk.
You will maintain the highest editorial standards, making sure our stories and videos are framed well, written clearly and feature the best of the BBCs reporting.
The News team needs people who are full of ideas, eager to brainstorm and contribute to our editorial meetings.
You will have useful and creative approaches to the big stories in India, including the best formats and visual treatments.
To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC to ensure that our output is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practices are upheld.

Are you the Right Candidate.
At least seven years of experience of editing and publishing output on the desk of a reputed digital news outlet.
A high standard of editorial judgment and production skills based on substantial experience of editing and writing news stories, features and video scripts.
Ability to lead a team and ensure the highest standards of subbing and error-free output.
Extensive experience of copy editing and rewriting news and features in text.
Substantial experience of editing video scripts and producing videos.
Substantial understanding of different social media formats.
An interest in exploring new ways of telling stories in text and social media videos.
Experience in understanding and analysing audience data.
