How to Spot Faux Friends and Colleagues at Work?
There's this coworker that gives me weird vibes. Not only are they too talkative but they also seem to fake friendliness.
Example: They ask you "How's work?!". You explain it's going fine with some delays and then laughingly they respond "Are you complaining now?!".
Overall, I like to just get my job done and not engage in such chats as they are often cringe but this person is like my boss in a way. How do I put up with them? A chat with them often feels like they doubt my competence or are interviewing me yet again.
Recently, they scheduled some meetings but strangely cancelled them after just two occurrences and they never texted me to tell me why the meetings were cancelled. These specific meetings felt like further interviews so I'm not sure if this isn't a clue I'll be fired soon.
What's my way out of this?🤷♂️

He says, "Are you complaining now?"
Wait a little, and repeat it, "You said I am complaining?"
You are dealing with someone who has way too much free time on her hands and is trying too hard to be a social butterfly. She probably doesn't have social graces, either. Focus on what you are supposed to do – and repeat what the person says to you next time and wait for the reply.

Keep it short, keep it simple, never initiate conversation, avoid/ignore them, document everything, and always have an exit strategy.

I have a co worker like that currently they're very sarcastic and they complain ALOT. They dont really engage with me because im fairly new but ive seen their behavior and they come of a bit mean or something is always an issue and its just really awkward to me.

Friendliness is not being a friend. It is just being polite.
When they ask questions like how is work, you simply answer, it is doing great and smile, then go back to whatever you are doing.

Be careful when they ask too much about work or your personal life. Some like to dig for information for gossip or they may be asking for the boss.
Just give vague answers and leave them nothing to run with.

yrrrr this is one of the major problem that exists in almost every corporate house and i don't know what do they get by showing such negative behavior. Have you thought about documenting any specific instances of inappropriate behavior ?

To spot faux friends at work, look for inconsistent behavior, passive-aggressive comments, lack of genuine interest, and unreliable behavior.
To deal with them, set boundaries, document interactions, focus on your work, build a support network, and seek HR assistance if necessary. How can you protect yourself from the negative impact of faux friendships in the workplace?
