Day to Day Office

2 Days in Office, but the Stress is Real!
Even with just two days in-office, I'm finding it overwhelming. My commute has stretched to 45 minutes thanks to construction, and the office setup is far from ideal—no noise-canceling options, no natural light, and uncomfortable seating that’s left me with back pain.
Most of my work involves conference calls and deep focus tasks, both of which I manage much better from home. I’m grateful it’s not a full-time office requirement, but the anxiety still hits hard every time I think about going in.
Anyone else feeling this way?🤷♂️

I think it’s valid to feel stressed about it. I know there’s the mindset of “at least it’s not five days” but also you could work from home five days a week so why aren’t we talking about that?
When I was in office I had a similar commute to you. Maybe an extra fifteen minutes each way. I don’t think people realize how much it eats up your day and you’re not even getting paid for it. Not to mention the hour unpaid lunch. So that’s like 3 hours of unpaid time per day and you could be doing so much with that time. On my office days I was always much more exhausted after work than my work from home days. I would even get headaches those days.
I think hybrid is stupid because it makes it difficult to get into a consistent routine. It’s good for you to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day so I would have to get up super early on my work from home days for no reason if I wanted to maintain that.
I agree that there isn’t a good reason to work in office when you have all your meetings virtually anyway. Nobody can focus because it’s loud and people interrupt. You get no control over lighting, temperature, noise levels. You don’t have food and drinks or a bathroom 10 steps away. How is any of that helpful for focusing?
Then there’s the unsettling feeling of knowing they can and probably will add more days at any time, just when you get used to a specific schedule. And I don’t know about you but RTO has also made management less flexible. A hybrid schedule wouldn’t be so bad if it was flexible.
I get it people are saying this has always been the norm and

Flexibility is key. We went from fully remote to 2 days of our choice, to 3 days with mandatory Wednesdays, to 3 days not of our choice. I am sure 4 days is next. Plus they take daily attendance & threatened to fire anyone who doesn’t comply. Receptionists were instructed to walk the halls to make sure those who marked themselves present are in. I feel bad for them, what a shitty new duty. It’s the combination of having no choice & the use of fear to ensure compliance that is particularly upsetting. C-suite seems so unhinged. We were equally or more productive when remote so it makes so little sense.

So stressed. I also have two days in the office after almost four years remote. My sleep is so much worse the nights before. I’m commuting two hours a day on top of my 10 hour shift. I see my kids an hour at best on my office days. I don’t even have a need to interact with any of my coworkers. My job is exactly the same whether I’m at home or in the office.

It seems like offices are doing their best to make remote work look appealing. From the chaotic commute to the less-than-ideal workspaces, it's no wonder you're feeling overwhelmed🤣🤣🤣🤣
