AC Substation Design Engineer- BESS

We are seeking a skilled AC Substation Design Engineer with expertise in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and optimizing medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) substations that integrate BESS into the grid. This role involves working on electrical layouts, protection & control systems, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Substation Design & Engineering

• Design and develop AC substations (MV/HV) for BESS applications, including layouts, single-line diagrams (SLD), and electrical schematics.
• Perform load flow, short circuit, grounding, and arc flash analysis for BESS-integrated substations.
• Specify and size transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and other electrical components.
• Design protection & control systems, including relay coordination and SCADA integration.
• Work with interconnection requirements to ensure seamless integration with the utility grid.

2. Technical Studies & Compliance

• Conduct power system studies (load flow, relay coordination, harmonics, transient stability).
• Ensure compliance with IEEE, IEC, NEC, NFPA, NESC, NERC, and local utility standards.
• Review and interpret grid codes, utility interconnection requirements, and project specifications.
• Coordinate with utilities for grid interconnection approvals and relay settings.

3. Project Management & Coordination

• Collaborate with civil, structural, and mechanical engineers to ensure holistic substation design.
• Work closely with BESS integrators, EPC contractors, and utility providers.
• Participate in design reviews, FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), and site commissioning.
• Prepare technical documentation, specifications, and reports.

4. Software & Tools

• Proficiency in ETAP, PSCAD, PowerFactory, SKM, CYME for power system modeling.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Revit for substation layout drawings.
• Knowledge of SCADA, PLCs, and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850) is a plus.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors/Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in AC substation design for utility-scale power projects (preferably BESS, solar, or wind).
• Strong knowledge of MV/HV equipment selection, grounding, and relay protection.
• Familiarity with BESS components (inverters, transformers, switchgear, EMS, PCS, etc.).
• Experience with power system studies and grid interconnection processes.
