Resume Shortlist Technical Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
For B.Tech Students, there will be an initial round of Test (Aptitude+ Core) for 1 hr. For Dual Degree and M.Tech Students, Tata Steel goes for initial CV Shortlisting. Shortlisting is mainly based on your academic Projects, Internships and a fare GPA ( 7.0 +) . Be thorough about your Core Internships and Projects done in B.Tech and M.Tech. PORs or any extra academic activities will be a bonus but that is not compulsory/required for initial shortlisting.
Interview Tips
Make your CV in such a way it can clearly highlight your works done in Internships and Projects and also clearly states about your achievements in those projects. Be thorough about the projects with an aptitude for applying core knowledge in industries. Always try to link your works with industrial applications and how it is addressing the current engineering challenges.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Tell me about yourself.
  • Question 2: Tell me about your B.Tech Project.
  • Question 3: Tell me about your M.Tech Project.
  • Question 4: Some fundamental questions on Mechanical Metallurgy.
  • Question 5: Briefly describe your industrial experience.
  • Question 6: What do you like most- Technology or Research?
  • Question 7: Why do you want to join Tata Steel ?
  • Question 8: Do You have any Questions?
Interview Experience
My interview experience was quite interesting. It went on a light and chill note throughout the interview session. Initially they (the interviewers) greeted me, followed by my initial introduction, followed by my narration about myself - I mean what you did in your 4/5 years of stay at IIT Kharagpur be it projects, internships or extra acads. After that they asked me about my B.Tech and M.Tech Projects at IIT Kharagpur. They will grill you on each and every small basics of your Projects. In between the discussions, they asked me fundamental Questions in Mechanical Metallurgy- What is Hall Petch Relation? What is precipitation hardening? What is electrodeposition? (because my project was on electrodeposition) and similar questions. After that they asked questions on my M.Tech Project on simulations and modelling ( as my project was on simulations). Then they asked me questions on my Internship which I did at Tata Steel. They asked me about the project done at Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, how I approached the problem, what technical details I considered before recommendations and what final result/outcome I achieved based on my suggestions. They actually wanted to see my aptitude to solve industrial problems. They were quite impressed by my Projects and Internships but they had intriguing question about how the two ( Projects -which were mostly research based & Industrial Intern) will help me create value for Tata Steel as both were on different domains - projects were based on Advanced Materials (Research Based) and Intern was based on Classical/Industrial Metallurgy- Iron and steel Making. That's why they asked me -What do you like most - Technology or Research ? I replied that for me technology is the most fascinating part as this gives me the engineering mindset to solve problems be it industrial, research or any other academic project. Technology is the intersection of every professional domain and I want to grow my career in this field by becoming a emerging technocrat in a leading industry like Tata Steel. Later on to further inquire my interests in the manufacturing industry they further asked - Why do you want to join Tata Steel ? I replied that Tata Steel is the 11th largest steel industry in the world. Working with with such a global organisation will provide me a steep learning curve in my core engineering domain. Also it wide cultural diversity will help me develop my personal and professional skills. I can create value to the organisation as well as to the social community using my problem solving skills and engineering aptitude. That's why I want to join Tata Steel .
Interview Tips
Just be Confident ! Its your confident and attitude in Placement Interviews that matters most and remarkably distinguishes you from others. Be thorough about your Projects and Internships - they will ask every subtle task that you have done during your project or internship work. Make sure keep your cool and take a breath while answering. Never hasten. They like smart, cool minded people. Also show your genuine interest in that industry specially that company - Why do you want to join that company ? Answer honestly and tell your passion for engineering by citing examples from the past. They really like young technocrats having an urge to do something new for technology. That's all. All the best !

Application
I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Dhanbad for Management trainee role at TATA Steel
Interview Process
Test Group Discussion Technical Interview
Round 1

Test

Duration
120 Minutes
No. of Questions
95 questions
Test Sections
  • Section 1: aptitude
  • Section 2: verbal ability
  • Section 3: logical
  • Section 4: technical
Interview Experience
There were 4 sections related to quant, logical, verbal and technical. The technical part was above par especially if you are mining engineer as most of the question in technical section will be based on course of 6th & 7th semester while company visits after 5th semester.
Interview Tips
The part of aptitude and logical is usually very simple and most of the people easily scores in these sections. As I said technical is tough. So, the main difference is due to marks you get in the verbal ability part.
Do LOD-1 of Arun Sharma and questions from Indiabix.com which will be sufficient for aptitude part. For technical, you can refer some basic notes of u/g coal, ventilation and mine legislation (for mining engineering)
Round 2

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
Is democracy hampering growth of India?
Interview Experience
The GD was little bit unusual as they allowed every one to put forward their points one by one and then counter the points of other if you want. It may depend on the HR guy visiting the campus.
Interview Tips
For GD, just focus on the basics like don't be too dominant, open yourself to points put by other, do not right away take a single side in case of GD with debatable topic.
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
    Interview Experience
It was the 3rd & the last round the Personal Interview. They may have a look at the CV (as was case with me). Usually kept the questions strictly related to the technical and management aspects of mining especially focuses on your projects and papers. They also posed some genuine and general HR questions towards the end of the interview. The main focus in HR question is to find out that will you be adaptable to the remote location of the job.
    Interview Tips
Focus on your CV. Never put a false point in it. Be yourself and stay focused in whichever way you can. For me, I listen to music in any such situation and that's what I was doing half an hour before interview. Be dressed up properly as it gives you a lot of confidence boost. Prepare for some basic HR question. Make sure that you put the point where you want interviewer to focus on in the introduction in the best way possible so that interview can take a better and your preferred pathway.

    Skill Tips
Start focusing towards building skills from the 5th sem. Getting an intern at any company will help you improve your technical skills. Prepare for aptitude skills as a leisure activity. Form a serious group who are ready to do a GD daily. Get as much technical knowledge as you can and keep your concepts clear. Also maintain a decent GPA as the company usually prefers people with higher grades.
    Resources

    Preparation materials

    Books
    • Coal Mines Regulation 1957,
    • Mine Ventilation by G B Mishra,
    • Mine Surveying by B C Punmia,
    • Coal Mining Practice by R D Singh,
    • Drilling and Blasting by Jimeno,
    • Verbal Ability And Reading Comprehension For Cat : Arun Sharma,
    • Data Interpretation And Logical Reasoning By Arun Sharm,
    General Tips
Be focused on your goals especially short-term. If you want to prepare for CAT then I would say you should say NO to internship. In case of MS, you can surely grab it. Be sure about this at the start of the 5th semester. Interact with your seniors and colleagues and based on your interest make a suitable decision for yourself.

In case you want the job in core sector then start improving the technical knowledge. Give importance to your B.Tech. project. Adapt yourself to the condition that you will get a remote location if you are a mining engineer
    Motivation for applying
I was not that sure at that time between doing MBA or to remain in the core sector, so for me there was no motivation. I was just going with the flow and BAMM!! got intern. Then i started taking real interest in the technical aspects.

    PLEASE DON'T BE LIKE ME!!!
    Funny Moments
During interview, I addressed my father working as Govt. Servant instead of employee. The HR wrote that point and asked me about it later after all the technical question. I was left embarrassed and giving lame excuse that it is the word we use in day-to-day language and the whole panel was laughing on me..:P

Thank GOD!! it didn't create too much negative impact

        Interview Experience
There were 4 sections containing quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, logical reasoning and technical knowledge. The questions in the technical section were mostly from the previous year GATE papers. However, they were a tad above normal difficulty level and required in-depth technical knowledge
        Interview Tips
I did some questions from Arun Sharma for QA. For verbal ability and logical reasoning, I relied on my skills. Since TATA was recruiting for the first time in many years for mining, so I was absolutely clueless about the technical part and had gone to the exams without any solid preparations.

Not much preparation. One needs to understand the purpose of a GD round. It is to scrutinize a candidate’s ability to comprehend, present and listen to others. People often confuse GDs with debates and take a very tough stand as a result of which they fail to adapt to someone’s version of the issue. Candidates also rush in to make a conclusion when there is need of none. The aim should be to guide the discussion yet avoid being the dominant force and at the same time, being smart in using others’ points/ arguments to your advantage. One needs to be updated with the latest happenings via newspaper and blogs. And not to forget the youtube videos that serve as a crash course.

        Interview Questions
          Interview Experience
It was the 3rd & the last round the Personal Interview. They didn’t have a look at the CV and kept the questions strictly related to the technical and management aspects of mining. They also posed some genuine and general HR questions towards the end of the interview.
          Interview Tips
Before the interview round, I decided to target a certain section of my curriculum. I read as much as I could on that topic and ensured that I didn’t make a fool out of myself when I answered the questions. I had also practiced my introduction, as it shapes the entire interview. I had made sure that I included my technical expertise in my introduction and I had carried all my projects and models in the form of documents.

            Skill Tips
It was exhausting. Although, it lasted just one semester yet it was mentally taxing. One has to be psychologically tough to get till the last round and handle rejection after that. And it takes even a tougher mind to get your composure back after a rejection. Not to forget the role of my supportive parents and friends who were there with me through difficult times. And I wasn’t adequately prepared to clear the quantitative aptitude round of assessment process. It took a bit of effort to hone my skills and after 2 failed attempts I was able to clear the written rounds of all the companies that I appeared for.
            General Tips
First of all, decide whether you want a core job or a non-core job. People spend the 7th semester while contemplating about their choices and desires. By the time they arrive at a conclusion it is too late. If you are interested for a core job, you have to be technically knowledgeable. At the end, it is always luck that decides whether you will be getting the job or not. But one cannot turn a blind eye to the need of preparation.
            Motivation for applying
I am quite happy and satisfied with the company that I am placed in.TATA Steel is a great place to start your career at. I always wanted a core job and it was necessary for me that I got one. Given the companies that visit NITR for Mining Engineering, I am more than just happy to settle for it
