Test

Test Sections
 • Section 1: 120
Interview Experience
Test was consisted of 4 sections with individual cut-offs, so initially I was little bit afraid. But when test came on the screen, it was not that much tough as I was expecting to be. So, overall, it was good, not very difficult. They just checked the basics and presence of mind.
Interview Tips
Solve some easy questions one day before the test. Most important thing, be confident.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
Is it good or bad to have women at top positions like CEOs of the corporate company?
Interview Experience
I had faced one GD before the GD of TATA Motors so I was quite confident for it.
Interview Tips
They gave 2 minutes time before starting the discussion, so, do not be nervous. Just think of the possible dimensions of the topic.
Most important tip :even if you don't get any idea, don't panic, just do one thing. Support other's point. For example, if someone saying I think it is good idea,........ so you say " I strongly support your point but it should be like this that etc etc " Dilpomacy.
Round 3

Problem Statement

Interview Experience
According to me, it does not play very important role because our activity did not give something fruitful, many were shortlisted after this phase also.many were shortlisted after this phase too.
Interview Tips
In every activity whatever is given, be active participant. And keep on giving suggestions and guide the group but be sensible otherwise it may be counted as negative point also.
Round 4

Other Interview

Interview Questions
 • Question 1: You are having only 5 minutes in which you have to describe everything related to studies, ypur presonal life. You can even share your relationship problems or happiness also. And your time starts now. What do we use to improve power factor in the industry? What are the circuit breakers used in the homes? Whats are the MCBs RLCBs etc?
Interview Experience
Initially, as obvious was a little bit afraid,I kept speaking, covering all aspects that I could remember at that time. At last, he said he was quite impressed by my answer.
These are very very basic question for any electrical Engg.
Interview Tips
First all wish everyone and to the lady member first. Be confident. Take your time to think the relevant point before giving answers. They understand, you are human being not the machine. Maintain eye contact to as many persons as you can.
If you do not know answer just tell them you dnt know. Do not try to play with technical person.

General Tips
First and foremost, confidence. Take your time to give right answers instead of throwing the answers on the interviewer.
Motivation for applying
As TATA Motors has international recognition, so working in this company itself was a great motivation. As I wanted to have exposure of various fields like Mechanical Engg. also, so I chose to work with automobile company.

Tata Motors Get interview

Subhradeep DhalFresherSelected
Application
I was interviewed on-campus at NIT Rourkela for Get role at Tata Motors
Interview Process
Test Group Discussion Technical Interview
Round 1

Test

Duration
60 Minutes
No. of Questions
60 questions
Test Sections
 • Section 1: Aptitude
 • Section 2: Technical
Interview Experience
The written round was fairly easy. 30 questions from each section. The aptitude section was easier which didn't pose any difficulty for most of the candidates. The technical part had basic questions to test the fundamentals.
The test had a different format where each question had a specific time limit. After attending a question there was no option to review it. Around 60-70 % of the candidates got selected for the next round.
Interview Tips
The trick lies in attending as many questions as possible. As said always accuracy matters. But then again it was not a national level exam. So all we had to do was clear the cut offs. And the no of students getting eliminated in this round was not high.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
20 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
Are women good managers.
Interview Experience
I had a descent experience. The discussion started well but turned rough towards the second half where students started mentioning biased points towards there own gender. Overall it was not that fierce. I started the discussion. The panel had 8 students with 2 moderators. We allowed each and everyone to present their points. 5 students got selected for the personal interview round. Only the ones who had spoke very little were eliminated.
Interview Tips
Well there are lots of tips which are available online on how to tackle GD's. But from my personal experience i would like to state that if you are not well aware of the topic then take the risk and start or initiate the discussion. It's easier to introduce the topic covering the basic points. Or else you can give a suitable conclusion at the end by collecting the points and summering the overall topic.
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
Although i have titled it as a technical interview , it was a technical cum HR interview. The discussion went on for approximately 30 minutes. Starting with my internship experience they covered core areas of automobile industry. I was able to answer most of them and denied politely to whichever questions i didn't know the answer to. They asked about my future goals, my hobbies and achievements. Overall it was very interactive and a healthy experience.
Interview Tips
Be prepared to answer any question based on your resume. Pick your favorite subject and start preparing thoroughly. For e.g for TATA Motors (in fact for all the automobile companies) i covered basic areas of Automobile Engineering (my areas of interest were transmission and drivetrain) . Show some interest that you want to join their company. All in all try to be yourself and give your best. To avoid being nervous, believe that it's not the end. A lot of companies would visit later and life doesn't end here. So keep calm and be expressive.

I was asked the length of football goal post and instead of 24ft i said 24m to which the panel started laughing and giving me suspicious looks. I rectified it quickly though. I guess i had lost my focus a bit towards the end of the round.

Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
20 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
Media -Judge jury or executioner
Interview Experience
There were 8 people in the GD.
The panelists were looking for new ideas and valid points, steering discussion, letting everyone speak, if someone didn't talk at all then encouraging him/her to speak, starting and concluding topic will be added advantage. Basically, all common GD things.
Interview Tips
But they were mainly looking for people who put forth their ideas and at the same time manage everyone and listen to everyone's point of view.
Round 3

Interview

Interview Questions
 • Question 1: How would you specify a pneumatic cylinder to manufacturer ?
 • Question 2: How would you specify spring to manufacturer ?
Interview Experience
It was a 55-minute round with three panels, each having 2 interviewees (HR and Tech).

The questions were all rapid fire type until I stopped answering.
e.g
Panelist: How would you design a knife ?
Me: Safety, ease of use, good grip, ergonomics, less effort.
P: What material ?
Me: alloy steel (i was being careful!)
P: What alloy steel
Me: The one which has more wear resistance.
P: What property gives material more wear resistance ?
Me: Hardness
P: How will you increase material's hardness ?
Me: Annealing
P: Wrong, quenching.
Interview Tips
Prepare by going through all mechanical engineering stuff and go through all the projects thoroughly. Also, prepare everything in your resume.

I think I got in because of my automobile related projects and internships, especially, Mahindra and Mahindra R & D. I guess the interviewee had made his mind to take me in just by looking at my resume, but still during the interview he was testing my knowledge other than design.
Skills

Skills Tested

Skill Tips
I started my preparations in October but I think starting earlier would have helped. My preparation pattern for the placements was:
Core: Going through all the books again. Reading summery of topics, going through GATE/IES materials in Lan.
Projects: All reports, ppt’s.
Interview: Mock interviews with friends / IITMAA
GD: Practice with wing-mates, some online sites like www.indiabix.com.
General Tips
Some things that an aspiring candidate should concentrate on:

1) In depth knowledge and be through with your projects.

2) Resume is one of the key things. If not in shortlisting, then at least in final interview it will matter a lot. Take help from everyone while writing your resume, take feedback from maximum people all around you.

3) Practice GD/ Interview a lot, it will boost your confidence. Finally all comes down to your confidence and how you perform in interview. Don’t be stressed, chill out. Before interview have proper food/water and most importantly stay in a chilled out group of people.

4) Know about the company you are sitting for. Get to know beforehand what they are looking for and then sell yourself in that way. It’s all about marketing yourself by projecting your good points with respect to their requirements.

Interview Process
Test Group Discussion HR Interview
Round 1

Test

Test Sections
 • Section 1: Online test
Interview Experience
There was one online written test divided into 4 sections- English, Aptitude (Quantitative Analysis, Verbal ability) & Technical questions.

2 Hour test (15 English, 25 Quantitative Analysis, 35 Verbal ability, 25 Mechanical Engineering Questions). Questions were basic and simple.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
Are smartphones making us dumb?
Interview Experience
I think this played a crucial role in my selection and gave me the upper hand over other candidates. We were 8 candidates in one group for GD. Before starting the actual group discussion they asked us that “any one of you can stand up voluntarily and tell us about your college". Here I took the initiative and spoke about the MNIT (bit of history, about departments, about achievements of the college, about various technical and non-technical activities which was going on.) until he stopped me. Here I would like to give credits to my extra-curricular.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Questions
 • Question 1: Tell me about yourself and family
 • Question 2: Technical Projects Undertaken
 • Question 3: Latest technologies in Automobile Industry
Interview Experience
HR plus Technical InterviewAs I was the Placement Coordinator also and was hosting their campus visit too, so i got an edge of it. In the interview first they asked me "Tell me about yourself & family background". Then they asked me "have you done any technical Projects?"

I told them about SAE Efficycle. Then they asked me "what do you excite in Automobile industry?" I told them about Latest technology and SUVs. Then they asked about what are the latest technologies in Automobile industries. I told them about CRDI & VVT. Then they asked me if I give 5 lacs rupees and ask you to buy a car which parameters you will look as a mechanical engineers? Then they ask me about Turbocharger? Then they try to puzzle me. They ask me that if we give you the “HR” profile will you accept it? I said no. I told them according to my qualification, I fit to a technical profile and it also excites me. Here they were basically cross-checking me interest.
Interview Tips
1. Be aware about the latest technologies in Automobile.

2. You should know basics of Automobile Engineering & IC Engine

3. Be confident & genuine in interview , don’t just give abrupt answer, if you don’t know the answer then tell them that I don’t know the answer or I am not recalling it.

Know the basics of the field you want to enter into. Be aware about the progress in that field.Be confident and genuine.

I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Kanpur for Management trainee role at Tata Motors
Interview Process
aptitude test Technical test Group Discussion technical interview
Round 1

aptitude test

Interview Experience
The aptitude test consisted of verbal, analytical and numerical questions with sufficient time to answer the questions.
Round 2

Technical test

Interview Experience
The technical test contained questions from almost all the compulsory courses that you may have studied over the past four-five years, mostly conceptual though but there were some numerical questions as well.
Round 3

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
Is quality a myth in India ?
Interview Experience
There was a group discussion on the topic ‘Is quality a myth in India? ‘ to eliminate a few students and the rest were selected for the final interviews.
Round 4

technical interview

Interview Experience
Interview lasted for about 25-30 minutes. They started by asking about my interests and backgrounds and then came directly into questions related to my areas of interests. They asked questions about torque transmission through a shaft, I-beams, stress-strain and buckling and a little background about my thesis followed by one basic question related to it. The final 10-12 minutes were spent in discussing the questions that I had asked the interviewers and it also helped in lightening the mood, so I would suggest be ready to ask the interviewer a few questions to show that you are genuinely interested
During the interview questions were asked mostly from my areas of interests and a little about my thesis and internships. But it is important to know one or two courses very thoroughly.
General Tips
Do’s and Don’ts :

● Do not take GD’s lightly, I ignored it till the very last moment and did my first GD on the night before the actual GD. It is a shortlisting criteria for many mechanical engineering core companies and you wouldn’t want to lose out there.

● Read about your thesis and internships properly. Many of your interviews would revolve around that only.

● Select one or two major courses and prepare them thoroughly, you may be asked about the courses that you liked at IITK followed by some questions related to it.

● Practice explaining your projects and HR questions with someone.

● Get to know a little about the company before the interview. You may drop that information somewhere during the interview to show your interest. Also be ready to ask a question at the end.

● Don’t copy answers to HR questions from the internet, write your own and try to remember the key points.

● Don’t lose heart if you are not shortlisted or not selected. There are a lot of other options.

Tata Motors GET ( GRADUATE ENGINEER TRAINEE ) interview

AnonymousFresherNot Selected
Application
I was interviewed on-campus for GET ( GRADUATE ENGINEER TRAINEE ) role at Tata Motors
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Test Group Discussion HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
I had a standard resume for this company as per the norms of our institute’s placement cell. For Tata Motors I laid emphasis on both – my technical skills as well as extra-curricular activities.
Round 2

Test

Interview Experience
The written test had both technical as well as general aptitude questions. The aptitude questions were easy as per the standards of CAT examination. Manufacturing was the major topic that they had asked besides fluid was another important topic. They had also asked topics covering almost all aspects of mechanical engineering. Surface knowledge of the major topics in the mechanical engineering area would be more than sufficient to clear the test.
Round 3

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
Will India be a Super Power.
Interview Experience
The next round was the Group Discussion round and the topic for discussion was “Will India be a Super Power”. The group was around 10 students and 4 students from the group were selected for the next round. They were looking for students with good communication skills and those who can communicate their point in a group.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
The panel began asking questions from my resume. I had written German as one of the languages I knew. So they asked me questions related to German language. They asked me words and their meanings. They then asked me simple technical questions. I had written my interest as Solid mechanics, IC engines and Thermodynamics. My preferred subject was Solid Mechanics but they refused to ask question from it. Instead they questioned me on IC engines - What is brake horse power and questions related to knocking. Most of the questions asked were pretty simple though.

The HR interview session was pretty long though. They asked me about my aims and aspirations and also about my family. They lay a little more importance to your family values as well as on the fact that whether you will stick with their organization for long term
Motivation for applying
Tata is a household name in India. I knew about this company and its activities through its promotional ads and also from its site. The company was focussing on the core technical knowledge and did not lay a lot of emphasis on knowledge about the company.

Tata Motors interview

Roshan LalFresherSelected
Application
I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Delhi for Tata Motors
Interview Process
Test HR Interview Technical Interview
Round 1

Test

Test Sections
 • Section 1: Written
Interview Experience
There are technical , aptitude and English. Anyone who have studied for GATE can do technical easily. For aptitude and English, it is just time management that matters. So, do aptitude questions as far as possible.
I did almost all questions in all three sections. In technical section, I could not do last 3 question as time was over. That shows questions were very easy. In aptitude and english , almost all questions are simple except some tricky one.
Interview Tips
Do not waste time in any section, in which you have doubt as it was just a time management game and other questions are waiting to be answered that you know. You can easily find Tata Motors campus selection question paper online. If your aptitude is weak, give one week time for aptitude preparation.
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Questions
 • Question 1: HR interview was just a formality.
Interview Experience
It was pretty cool 5 min interview in which it was just asked that how was the technical panel and how you felt during interview.
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
 • Question 1: So you are Roshan Kumar from Jamshedpur... Why do you want to join TATA Motors?
 • Question 2: It was bit of discussion on FIP
 • Question 3: What may be the number of cars manufactured daily in India?
 • Question 4: Why petrol cannot be used in diesel engine and vice versa?
 • Question 5: What is volatality ? which is more volatile - diesel or petrol?
 • Question 6: He gave me two coupans - on 1st coupan it was written buy anything of worth 20 rs. by this coupan and on 2nd coupan it was written pay 20 rs and buy anything of worth 50 rs. I have been asked to select one coupan.
 • Question 7: Which car you want to buy after you will have enough amount of money?
 • Question 8: Why that car? I told BMW and answered as a status symbol, then he asked is not the problem in india to do everything for status?
 • Question 9: What was your B.tech project and detailed question on it?
 • Question 10: Question on product I made in M.tech..
 • Question 11: What was your internship in B.tech 3 rd year?
Interview Experience
The 1st question iteslf shows that technical panel was not basically only core technical , but mix of technical and HR and I think that's why HR panel was just formality. But, the expectation of answer was not only HR point of view, but mix of both. When I answered just HR point of view then , interviewer(only one man was there to take interview in each case - technical panel and HR panel) asked about my technical interest too like interest in automobile , engine etc.
Interview Tips
Just be calm and make your basics clear on IC engine.
