Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Group Discussion HR Interview Technical Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
I come from a 29 months work ex in Automobile Industry. However, I wasn't shortlisted in first 2 lists. Later, when some of the placement committee members pushed for me personally, I was the only candidate shortlisted in third list.

In campus recruitment, you need to be extremely lucky if the first selection is CV based. In a campus like KJ SIMSR, where recruiters generally get around 200-250 CVs, its unlikely that they'll look at them personally and completely. CGPA and Work Ex (having more can also go negative) are general filters.
Interview Tips
Either make sure that you are one of the best CGPA holders or have good access to recruiters so that they look at your other credentials too. (Good relations with PCommers could be really helpful in this.)
Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
15 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
Case Study: Tata Magic
Interview Experience
After getting shortlisted at 11:45am, I was told to sit for the GD at 12:10pm. But since it was a case study based discussion, everyone was on the same page. HR guy explained the case study to all of us and asked us to put our individual points in first 5 mins. Then it was opened for forum. It went on very peacefully without any interruption by the moderators (more because very few of the participants had a little bit of product knowledge). We were asked to plan marketing stratergy for TML's commercial vehicle Tata Magic which is used for passenger movements. Out of 12 participants, 4 were shortlisted including me.
Interview Tips
Start well, speak less, speak sense. Save your best words to close in last two lines.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Experience
HR interview was very generic. Reason to join Automobile, Team Handling capabilities, role description, past experiences. I have worked with Tata Motors before as a vendor in my previous company. So I could take many known names, discuss various experiences in detail. Tatas are known for ethics. And trust me, as far as my experience is concerned, I have really felt that its people who work there, make it really special. HRs made me very comfortable and complete interview experience was really nice.
Interview Tips
Speak the truth. Company like Tata Motors have been recruiting people since last 60 years. They'll catch you if you're lying.
Round 4

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
Tech interview was not that difficult. I had spoken to one of my friends in service department who helped me a lot with pros and cons of TML products. I knew the market wise performance of the company. Hence, I am sure that I scored the most there. Being an experienced candidate, the interviewer took me on a discussion level than interview. Some of the basic guesstimate questions were like,

1. What is TML's market share in Commercial Business
2. Why TML commands so much of MS?
3. Why do you think Ashok Leyland is doing better in South and not anywhere else?

Just have some basic knowledge about Automobile industry and you should be through. They don't expect you to know everything.
Interview Tips
Learn, study or talk to people who are working in the company. People are very simple here. So don't try to impress them with your style. They'll get impressed with sensible, real knowledge and material that you have. If you are a fresher, then obviously they won't expect you to have product knowledge and information on commercial vehicle industry. But you should be able to convey your passion for Automobile Industry and domain for which you are being interviewed.

General Tips
Be properly dressed. Speak clear, speak sense, to the point. Don't try to show off. Ethics are very much important in this organization. So don't say otherwise in interviews. The company can have gone places if it starts following market practices. But its firm on what it is doing and will stick to it.
Motivation for applying
Past work ex as a vendor, people who work there, excellent leadership that company has had in past.
Funny Moments
I knew that I was selected even more finishing my interview. As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't shortlisted in first two lists. So I missed the presentation that TML gave to all shortlisted candidates. Hence I requested the interviewer to go through the presentation so that I don't miss on anything important. He replied with a question asking me if I really need any presentation to know more about the company?

Tata Motors Get interview

I was interviewed on-campus at NIT Durgapur for Get role at Tata Motors
Interview Process
Test Group Discussion Technical Interview
Round 1

Test

Duration
90 Minutes
No. of Questions
90 questions
Test Sections
  • Section 1: 1. Aptitude
  • Section 2: 2. Technical
Interview Experience
The test was conducted via amcats.com. In aptitude section, quantitative, logical reasoning and verbal ability were three subsections and questions were more or less easy.In technical section, standard sets of questions ranging from machine design, thermal engineering to industrial engineering, almost all topics under mechanical engg., were included. Level of difficulty was medium.
Interview Tips
For aptitude, basic +2 knowledge coupled with some practice to increase speed is essential. For technical, a general overview of all the topics studied in earlier semesters under mechanical engineering including mathematics is needed.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
20 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
Glass Ceiling: Does gender equality exist in Indian Incorporates?
Interview Experience
Topic was nice and arguments on both fronts could be presented. An example is that in core engg. sector, although there is a minimal presence of women (which is a reflection of the fact that very few girls opt mech/ee/civil etc streams), the IT or Software sector doesn't face similar problems and upto certain level can boast of being equally harbouring geniuses from both genders alike.
Interview Tips
Be calm and try not to get into a fight with any member of the group. Always remember, this is a discussion and not a debate. Keep your points brief and salient and present them with confidence. Forget about the interviewers and make yourself comfortable. If you are unable to fathom the topic or come up with solid points at the spur of moment, take time and keep notes of others' arguments. Best of luck!
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: 1. Draw a 4-speed synchromesh gearbox. (A bomb at the beginning which was timely diffused since I had drawn it ago)
  • Question 2: 2. Tell me how transmission occurs from engine to wheel?
  • Question 3: 3. Basic questions on IC Engines like octane numbers etc.
  • Question 4: 4. What is limited slip differential? How it works?
  • Question 5: 5. Questions on fluid engg. like working of venturimeter etc.
  • Question 6: 6. Questions on machine design like how screw-jack works? how to increase efficiency? etc.
Interview Experience
My first question was "Tell me about yourself", which was the only HR question I was asked. So, I'm mentioning it in the technical portion itself. I calmly gave an answer which was semi-prepared and semi-modified at that moment.
In technical portion, most questions being from automobile engg, it was advantageous for me since its my favourite portion from mech. engg. All the questions were fundamental and doesn't need deeper knowledge of the topics.
Interview Tips
In a technical interview, knowledge and knowledge alone can help you. So, prepare the topics according to the company's job profile. No need to dig deeper into any special topic unless if you have spare time. Present your answers with a confident smile and clearly mention if you don't know answer to any question.
Skills

Skills Tested

Skill Tips
Speed and accuracy comes from practice and practice alone.Confidence comes from experience and over dominance over the subjects.
General Tips
As already mentioned, be confident yet humble. Humility gains you respect and respect gains you points in case your interview goes awry. At the end of the day, it finally comes down to the nature of the interviewer and how much you can make him feel your worth in his market. Sale yourself properly and even under utter absence of technical knowledge you can bag a job.
Motivation for applying
I have always wanted to join an automobile company and Tata Motors is one of the forerunner in the automobile sector globally. The association of Tata name is enough to motivate me to join this marvel of a company.
Funny Moments
When I was asked "Tell me about yourself". I cracked a joke in the middle of my answer saying "I am a training and placement representative of my college and I interact with students and company people on a frequent note and try to get my friends as many jobs as possible and right now I am doing the same by mentioning this fact to you ". They smiled heartily and I went on adding "Hopefully this way, I shall help myself bag the job at the end of the day". At the end of the day, I did get the job!!  (*Chuckles")

The tech questions were completely fundamental. I am a EE grad. Questions from analog, circuits, very basic EMT was there. Even a few question from Power plant engg and gears.
Interview Tips
Its a waste of time predicting the scope of the test. It has nothing to do with the company profile,or your forte. They can ask you anything engg related. You need to have the right mind, a reasoning skill to think it through. Even if its beyond your scope or know-how...calm down...think basic, fundamental of the subject, you would crack it :)

They said it was the worst gd of the day. and still selected 5 of us for the next round!
Interview Tips
They wanna see leadership skills, out of the box thinking and fluency! You need to be a good english speaker. There isnt a by-lane for that, you have to be fluent. A tip--> Make your point and then call out the one who is not speaking and give him/her a chance to speak. That shows leadership and teamwork capabilities. If its too much chaos, try to bring order! That looks better than creating anarchy! Oh and dont fight to conclude! They give each of you a minute to conclude your idea and place it in a proper unhindered way! DONT BE RUDE!! BE POITE! BE LOUD, BUT VERY VERY POLITE!!  Say,may I please have the chance to add to this discussion,I have something relevant to say in this regard...like that. Scream things like that, they dont look like you are quarreling!
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
They asked me to draw a four point and a three point starter. Questions on dc motors, power system, instrumentation, control system. I answered each of them. Right or wrong I dint waste time,so that they ask me the next question!
Interview Tips
Dont waste time hesitating. Admit you are weak in that field and move on to the nxt question. More questions asked=more chance of you proving your worth! be confident about what you are saying,. Dont be a yes man and accept whatevr the interviewer tells you.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
Are you flexible to relocate? What is your plan for the next 5 years? I showed them that I want to be in TML sincerely and work my way up the ladder.
Interview Tips

Test Sections
  • Section 1: Quantitative aptitude (20 questions in 25 minutes)
  • Section 2: Logical reasoning(25 questions in 30 minutes)
  • Section 3: English aptitude (35 questions in 35 minutes)
  • Section 4: Technical subject test(production engineering 20 questions in 20 minutes)
Interview Experience
Tata motors online test in conducted by AMCAT. Quantitative and logical reasoning were pretty much easy. They had questions from all the chapters one can find in any so aptitude books. English questions were mostly usage based. One needs to have a strong reading base to answer the questions. Technical questions were mostly theoretical but very conceptual.
Interview Tips
Practice aptitude questions as much as possible. English needs to be developed through continuous effort. Read books and newspaper, once in a while try writing something in english. A thorough knowledge of your technical concepts is necessary. Focus on English if you think it is your weakest link ASAP. Many people understand this only at the 11th hour, which is of no help at all
Round 3

Group Discussion

Duration
8-10 minutes Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
Success is all about human relations
Interview Experience
Although our topic was somewhat abstract, other groups had topics based on current political ,social, and economic affairs. Based on the time that was given to us, the 7 of us each took a minute to put forth our point of view before finally concluding in the last 2 minutes of our allotted time. The discussion was a peaceful one and almost every body brought something new into the discussion. 5 of us got selected for the interview round
Interview Tips
Develop your communication skills. Make use of your professional communication skill classes if your college provides one. Take stock of what is happening around you, in your country, in the world. Practice having fruitful discussions with your friends around you on social topics.
Round 4

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Tell me about yourself
  • Question 2: Questions based on final year project, they asked a very tricky but conceptual question from my project.
  • Question 3: questions based on field of interest, e.g. what is work sampling, MOST, Vogel's approximation technique etc.
Interview Experience
I started by giving a small introduction about myself and my upbringing. The interviewers then took up to ask questions from my project. There were 3 interviewers, one hr and 2 technical interviewers. The y were very experienced professionals of their field and their questions reflected that. I was able to answer most of the questions, however they had me stuck at the project question for quite sometime.
Throughout the interview they were going through the my application form they gave us to fill after the online tests and also my CV.
Interview Tips
Keep confidence in yourself. If you have made this far in a placement drive then you have it in yourself to see through one more round. Interviews are hard to advise for and the only extra tip for facing an interview is to feel confident and cool.

I was interviewed on-campus for GET ( GRADUATE ENGINEER TRAINEE ) role at Tata Motors
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Group Discussion HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
The resume that I used while applying in different companies was nearly the same, however I did incorporate certain changes in areas of interest and the projects to make them more compatible with the profile/company which i was applying to. For instance while applying to Schlumberger I highlighted some of the technical projects.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
What is the backbone of Indian economy: the service sector or the manufacturing sector?
Interview Experience
I did not prepare for the Group Discussion (GD) activities. The second round conducted by Tata Motors was the GD round. The topic of the GD was ‘What is the backbone of Indian economy: the service sector or the manufacturing sector?’ My group comprised of 7 candidates out of which 4 got selected for the interview round.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Tell me about yourself.
  • Question 2: What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Interview Experience
I prepared for the HR interviews by writings and reciting answers to some frequently asked questions. The interviewers began by asking me to speak about myself. Next they enquired about my family background. Then they asked me to specify the reason to opt for mechanical engineering.

The interviewer then moved over to technical questions. The interviewers asked to specify my areas of interest. I replied stating refrigeration and air-conditioning, IC engines and fluid machinery as my areas my interest. In one of the questions he made a diagram with a pump, a reservoir and a relief valve and asked me to calculate something which i do not remember. Unfortunately we were not taught relief valve, and I told him about this. So the interviewer changed the topic and asked me to specify the topics which we were taught in our engineering course. I told him everything that i managed to recall at that moment. He then started asking me questions, some of them were:

What is the difference between positive Displacement Pump and Rotor Dynamics Pump?
In refrigerators only things that are kept in freezers freeze but the freezing process does not take place elsewhere in the refrigerators, why?
If in a refrigerator a particular wire is cut open, then where would gas come out and where would the liquid flow out from?
If the door of the refrigerator, which is kept in a room, is opened then would the room get cooled or heated.
The interview panel of Tata Motors is to simply test your basics. For instance in one of the questions they asked me to state the basic principle governing fluid machinery. This basic principle is the Pascal’s law. When I was asked this question, Pascal’s law never crossed my mind. Consequently, I asked him to quote which law he was talking about. He said Pascal’s law. In spite of him naming the law, it still took me about 3 to 4 minutes to recall the Pascal’s law. Once i managed to recall it i gave him the proper answer. The interview lasted for about 35 minutes.

The company eventually recruited 5 students.
Interview Tips
The technical questions asked in the interviews are the very basic once. Generally people tend to forget the basics that were taught to them in the initial years. Revise the introductory sections of the chapters. Focus more on the concepts rather than the equations.
Motivation for applying
Tata is a household name in India. I knew about this company and its activities through its promotional ads and also from its website. The company was focussing on the core technical knowledge and did not lay a lot of emphasis on knowledge about the company.

I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Madras for Post graduate engineer trainee [pget] role at Tata Motors
Interview Process
Test Resume Shortlist Technical + HR Interview
Round 1

Test

No. of Questions
120 questions
Test Sections
  • Section 1: Technical
  • Section 2: Aptitude
  • Section 3: Workplace Complacency Section
Interview Experience
The test was a very lengthy test with 5 sections for 2 hours. The amount of content that had to be read in the question paper is exceptionally high. There were huge paragraphs to be read and answered. There was an intriguing section, in which a set of tasks mentioned, each of them of unique nature and taking different time for completion and we had to number the tasks in our order of priority, which would ensure the tasks being completed as per time. That particular section was tedious and time taking as we had to read the tasks again and again to fully understand and compare them with each other. Overall, the exam, I'd describe it as more tedious and tiresome than analytically difficult.
Interview Tips
One has to maintain the same high level of analytical ability throught the test despite mental fatigue to complete the test in stipulated time. Practicing in that direction would certainly help.
Round 2

Round 3

Technical + HR Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Tell us a bit about yourself.
  • Question 2: What is your current project?
  • Question 3: Deep technical questions on project.
  • Question 4: The domain we're hiring for is not exactly what you're mastering in. Would you be able to adapt and be willing to do work that you aren't much familiar with?
Interview Experience
I answered most of questions asked on my project and other technical questions as well. For the question on non familiarity of work, I answered that I would consider it as a challenge and I'd be excited about such inter domain work as it would be a great opportunity to learn and expand my knowledge.
Interview Tips
A good opening statement makes most difference in interview. Being prepared for most of standard questions will prevent anxeity during the first few minutes of interview. When asked about yourself, starting by thanking them for the opportunity will certainly help. Whatever you're saying about yourself in the interview, keep an example demonstrating that quality in hand. And don't lie in the interview, we may think that we can manage by lying, but HR can easily see through it. Confidence and believing in yourself is key to crack any interview. Wear a smile in all appropriate moments during interview.
