There were 4 sections containing quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, logical reasoning and technical knowledge. The questions in the technical section were mostly from the previous year GATE papers. However, they were a tad above normal difficulty level and required in-depth technical knowledge

I did some questions from Arun Sharma for QA. For verbal ability and logical reasoning, I relied on my skills. Since TATA was recruiting for the first time in many years for mining, so I was absolutely clueless about the technical part and had gone to the exams without any solid preparations.

Not much preparation. One needs to understand the purpose of a GD round. It is to scrutinize a candidate’s ability to comprehend, present and listen to others. People often confuse GDs with debates and take a very tough stand as a result of which they fail to adapt to someone’s version of the issue. Candidates also rush in to make a conclusion when there is need of none. The aim should be to guide the discussion yet avoid being the dominant force and at the same time, being smart in using others’ points/ arguments to your advantage. One needs to be updated with the latest happenings via newspaper and blogs. And not to forget the youtube videos that serve as a crash course.

Technical Interview

It was the 3rd & the last round the Personal Interview. They didn’t have a look at the CV and kept the questions strictly related to the technical and management aspects of mining. They also posed some genuine and general HR questions towards the end of the interview.
Interview Tips
Before the interview round, I decided to target a certain section of my curriculum. I read as much as I could on that topic and ensured that I didn’t make a fool out of myself when I answered the questions. I had also practiced my introduction, as it shapes the entire interview. I had made sure that I included my technical expertise in my introduction and I had carried all my projects and models in the form of documents.
General Tips
Play your cards right. You need to understand the exact requirement of the company you are sitting for and show/hide your talents as per required. Keep your pointer above 7.5 at all costs. Do not consider any company beneath yourself (Yes, even TCS or IBM) because getting placed there gives you a relief that you can at the very least survive without being dependent on your parents anymore. However always strive for better companies.Most importantly, realize that placement is extremely based on luck. Hence do not get frustrated if your luck runs out.
Motivation for applying
Definitely. I wanted to get into a core startup company. But my elders wanted me to get into a stable workplace. And I ended up getting both options. No one could be happier. Though not yet fixed, probabilities lie high in me choosing Snapdeal because it offers a higher pay package and more work to do.

Then there was the pen and paper round where the rest of the 14 students were given 3 questions each and an hours time to write a fully functional code for as many questions possible.

10 students went through to the final technical round. All the 10 students had to undergo both the technical as well as the HR round. After the technical round was done, the student was immediately sent to the HR round wherein after the interview his/her result was announced to him/her by the HR A total of 5 students were hired and I was glad to be one among them.

It was challenging, rewarding as well as exhausting.

This was a super dream company and because I was already placed, I didn't have the pressure of not getting the job.

I was asked if I had any other interview to which I replied flipkart. He then asked me why snapdeal and not flipkart. I had studied everything about the 2 companies and was thus able to defend my choice. Next he gave me some puzzles, I did all with little inputs from him. I was asked to wait for 2nd interview and not go to Flipkart GD but I went anyway.

GD was conducted for shortlisted candidates and candidates were divided into groups of 6 people.There were 3 topics and each topic was discussed for 2 minutes.No specific rules,like each person needs to speak,are to be followed during the GD.Anyone can initiate,intervene,etc. Finally we were asked to link all three topics and this discussion went on for another 2 minutes.

Only a single round lasting about 40-45 minutes.There were only 4 people in the panel and technical as well as HR questions were asked. First I was asked to go through my own resume, “Introduce/Tell us about yourself?".  E.g.:“Where have you shown leadership qualities?Have you led a
team?Size of team? What new initiatives did you take?”.Core questions starting form basics like “How does an airplane fly?” to specific questions about the different types of engines used in airplanes,their specifications, etc. were asked. HR questions were put up like"What was the most difficult decision in your life?" and grilled on my internship for 15-20 minutes which I did in Transocean. (Another oil field services company).

I prepared a single resume but changed my areas of interest while applying in different companies. For instance while applying in Samsung Electronics I wrote about my strengths in data structures and various programming languages. I had a long list of extra-curricular activities under my belt; I made sure to select a handful of relevant activities and mentioned them in my resume.

Interview Experience
The first round was the written test. The questions were subjective as well as objective and comprised of 10 questions. Out of these 10 questions the first 4 subjective questions were compulsory questions and needed to be answered correctly. Incorrect answers to any one of these 4 questions rendered the candidate appearing for the test ineligible for the next round. After these 4 questions there were few objective questions and then there were 2 programming questions at the end of the paper.

The first 4 questions were based on permutation, combination and probability. The objective questions were also based on permutation, combination and probability, but also included some questions on speed, distance and time. For example in one of the questions we were asked to calculate the total number of rectangles in an 8x8 chess board.

In the programming sections there were two questions, one of the questions was a subjective question based on string and the other question was based on determining the output of the given code.

HR Interview

In the interview the interviewers asked me some programming questions and puzzles. The question was that we have two stacks and using the two stacks we had to generate an output such that it was similar to a queue. It was that the one that was inserted the first should be the one as output as the first one. What I did was to pop out all elements from a stack and put it in another stack until the last one. The last element will then be the output. Then the same process was followed.

Next they asked me some puzzles. Surprisingly, their puzzles were repeated, i.e. the puzzles that were asked to the candidates before me were the same as those asked to me. In one of the puzzles I was told about 3 king-queen pairs that wanted to cross a particular river with only one boat available for the purpose. The boat could accommodate maximum 2 people and a particular queen cannot survive with any of the two other kings in absence of her own king, but a particular queen can survive with any of the other two queen or both of them in absence of her own king. I had to suggest a way to help them cross the river safely.

Be extremely well prepared for any company. Research about the company's profile extensively before the company's interview. HR panel always looks for candidates who are well aware of the company in order to measure the candidate's interest. Data structures are absolutely necessary for any company. Improve coding skills through frequent participation in competitive programming arena such as codeForces, codeChef, HackerEarth etc. "Software development job profile was offered to me.

Unnecessary and irrelevant questions are to be avoided. We should raise questions only if we have some genuine questions. However any question related to job profile or location preference could be raised. "

"It was very grueling and tiring at first but the sweet taste of placement makes it all worth it.

Do’s :

1. Start preparing with the start of the summers.

2. Concentrate on your own preparation and not on what others are doing.

3. Keep the preparation time of HR to maximum 20 hours because HR accounts for just 20% weightage in your selection procedure.

4. Have patience.

5. Prepare every point written in the resume such that you are able to speak for at least 3 min on the subject. You might gain bonus points if you are aware of some latest developments or strategic changes in the field.



Don’ts :

1. Never bog down when you are either not shortlisted in the company who have been aiming for or when even after practice you are not getting the correct way.

2. Do not form very large groups for the preparation. Try making the preparation time that you spend with the group as efficient as possible with the least of bulla sessions.
