Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Tell me about yourself.
  • Question 2: Your experiences on being the part of your team.
  • Question 3: Your knowledge gathering
  • Question 4: Handling of your subordinates
  • Question 5: The good and bad experiences of being a part of the team
  • Question 6: About your experiences of the internship
  • Question 7: The work you did, the projects given to you, the efforts you made to finally complete the project, the outcome of your work etc
Interview Experience
So the call came at 8 in the morning. Important note again, the call can come anytime on a predefined date, so be prepared with all your documents, a pen and a few A4 sheets, calculator and calendar. Note down the name of the person calling you. Forgetting the name of your interviewer is a bad sign and it’s not rare to happen as the call may prolong to over an hour, mine being around 75 odd minutes. The interviewer generally decides the layout of the interview so stick to it. Also the interviewer is a HR personnel and he/she will be jotting down each and everything you’ll be saying so think before you speak. At times it may happen that you may be saying something but there will be no response from the interviewer, don’t panic. He/she may be busy writing down your sayings so don’t pause. If it’s awkwardly long, then you can stop and ask for a response.

First fifteen minutes will be the settling time, you’ll be answering questions related to you which won’t be judged, so calm down, relax and have a normal conversation with the interviewer. The next half an hour/45 min will be the one on which they will ask questions related to your work, your achievements and your experiences which will be judged and
noted. The last 15 min will be a general topic will be given to you and your views will be asked about on the topic. Remember, no one is omniscient. So if you don’t know about the topic, you can obviously ask the interviewer to give a general idea on the topic. DON’T GOOGLE. The interviewers are trained people who know when you are reading and saying the answer. It’s better if you give your perspective and the process you take to know and speak about the new topics is better as it will show how you learn as well as give YOUR idea on the topic.

The interview is generally HR based so technical knowledge is not required but it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t know about your projects. Review your projects, know the nittygritty of your work and describe it in such a way that the person on the other end can understand, appreciate and indulge himself/herself in the talk.
Interview Tips
Once my resume was over, I got a notification from Shell that I will be judged over a telephonic interview. Again an important notice, telephonic interviews are not that easy and simple, as they seem to be. Also in my case it was tough as I was competing against 17 other equally qualified people for one or two positions. Here your knowledge about the company, its background, its requirements come into picture. You should be able to tell why you are better than the others without criticizing them, in fact by showing your true skills in a positive manner.
General Tips
The Preparation:

Since the start, I was reading about the companies coming at IITK, reading about their work, their new challenges, the opportunities that I would have with them. Shell, of all companies, captivated me the most. I came to know about the Gourami challenge from the seniors selected and since I was in dual degree, it also gave me the time to prepare for it.

There are three modes of recruitment in Shell namely (1) Internships (2) Gourami Business Challenge and (3) SRD (Shell Recruitment Day). The most enchanting one as I felt was the 2nd one. But all play and no work makes Jack stupid. So prepare hard, it’s a single opportunity of your lifetime.

First of all, you should work on your resume; it’s your first impression. Prepare a master resume and as many companies have their own format, try to fit into their requirements. Don’t overindulge in various activities if you can’t handle studies with extra curriculars. A good CPI shows your determination towards your academics, which is by far the most important thing in the campus. But two different students with almost same CPI are differentiated on the basis of extra curriculars and internships. So these things are not unimportant. So, resume is a very important part of the application. It should show your abilities to their full extent. Not to mention, it is you telling about yourself in absence. Add your strong points, make it delightful to read, use simple plain English so that a non-technical person is also able to understand. FYI the resumes are generally short listed by HR members so you have to make them understand your skills. Don’t repeat your stuffs, sort out and order your important achievements as per the requirements.

Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Puzzle Interview Case Study Interview Group Discussion Technical Interview HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
I took suggestions about the basic format from my father and sister. Once I made my resume, I got it checked by one of my teachers. It is advisable to limit the document to 2 pages. Among other things, your first page should have academic achievements or extra-curricular achievements depending on which is more impressive, and depending on the target company. PPTs are an invaluable source of information for the HR part of the interview. In their PPTs, companies generally indicate what skills they are looking for from applicants. These will come in very handy in answering questions like - Why should we hire you? or What qualities of yours suits our company's requirements? Also, you get to know a lot about the company and its USP. This helps you in questions like Why do you want to join our company? This is especially useful for students of branches like civil, mining, and metallurgy seeking jobs in the software industry. Did you talk to anyone on how to choose jobs/companies? In what way. I just appeared in the companies that came first. Since these companies were excellent in their respective fields, I have no regrets in sitting for them. Apart from that, since our institute gives us the liberty to take more than one job, choosing jobs is not such a big dilemma.
Round 2

Puzzle Interview

Interview Experience
I only went through the puzzle sets of previous years placement papers. I suppose soft copies of these papers are in circulation in colleges.
Round 3

Case Study Interview

Interview Experience
We had to study the given case within a certain time limit. After that, we had to give an oral presentation, and there was an exhaustive discussion with the interview panel on the presentation.
Round 4

Group Discussion

Interview Experience
It was a slightly modified form of a GD, but normal GD mantras hold good.
Round 5

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
It was a long and exhaustive interview based a technical project that you have done. This round is purely technical, so your project had better be good.
Round 6

HR Interview

Interview Experience
Shell had a rigorous procedure that was divided into 2 sessions separated by about 3 weeks. The first was a general group discussion (non-technical) and general HR interview (for candidates shortlisted from GD). The interview was very different in that we were asked to speak on a particular topic (like I was asked questions about transportation) and the interviewer, by cross-questioning you, would extract every bit of information that you know about the topic. Selected students advanced to the second session.
Interview Tips
Decent communication skills and Good technical project

Resume Shortlist Group Discussion
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
Whatever you write in your resume, you should be ready to defend it 100%.Resume should be company specific. Yes, I attended and gained from them too. While attending them one should look for two things 1. Are you sitting for the right job? 2. And if you are running for it, then what exactly the company is looking for. I didn't talk to anyone but it certainly helps in a way that you can't know everything in an hour PPT.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Interview Experience
I can't help much in this regard as I didn't do anything specific, just the common things like reading newspapers, magazines, novels etc. Yes, there was a GD course in our curriculum. That helped a lot. For interview/GD/Test preparation did you prepare in groups or individually? Which one do you think helps the most? Both in a group and individually. Both help.
Round 3

Interview Experience
Before you enter the interview room the panel has already gone through your resume and most of the questions were asked from it and then there were cross questions on what I answered. General questions like a. Tell me about yourself b. What are your hobbies c. why do you want to join this company are always there. In one of the interview (value serve) I was asked to calculate the number of trains running between Varanasi and New Delhi at 10 pm.In the previous round I was asked a question in German(as I had written in my CV acquaintance with German language.) First there was a GD followed by an interview. This comprised the prelims. Then finally there were 3 rounds 1. Case Study 2. Group Activity 3. Technical Interview. In the prelims interview I was given a responsibility and was asked about my course of action (I was made some minister). Finally, in Round 1 there was a case study in which you had to come out with solutions for tons of problems at a time and then you had to justify them. Round 2 was GD type. First there was a discussion among two and then finally among four. Last round was totally based on the projects completed during the course.
