I was interviewed on-campus for GET ( GRADUATE ENGINEER TRAINEE ) role at Reliance
Interview Process
Test HR Interview
Round 1

Test

Interview Experience
The selection process had a written test as the first round. It had questions from logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude and from core mechanical engineering topics. It was not such a difficult test and if you had surface knowledge of the different topics of mechanical you could have cleared the written test. After the written test there was a single interview for shortlisted candidates.
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Experience
My interview proceeded along the following lines (I had been advised by people not to follow this casual attitude and I don’t know what I was thinking while answering the questions). There was only one interviewer.

Sir: Good afternoon have a seat.

Me: Thank you Sir, How are you?

Sir: I am good, thanks. So tell me something about yourself.

Me: Sir I (So I started about my family background, parents and everything while he looked over my resume, I had prepared to leave the answer on BAJA as that was my strong point, but he interrupted me in the middle only)

Sir: I see that you have done a lot of work on fatigue. (3 projects, internship and area of interest, I had forgotten to modify my resume for Reliance) Can you define for me what fatigue is?

Me: Sure sir (so I start to explain him fatigue and its analysis, how and what I had done in my projects etc.)

Sir: That is correct, but you still haven’t given me the definition of fatigue.

Me: Sir, (I again started to explain it to him and most of the conversation was in Hindi).

From here on most of the interview was in Hindi and also informal in terms of the tone.

Sir: You are running around the bush but not telling me the definition of fatigue (from here on whole interview was kind of informal)

Me: Sir, have a look at my CGPA do you think I will remember definition but I guarantee you that I know the practical aspect of things. I believe in learning by doing.

Sir: I never asked you to give me a bookish definition

Me: Sir, I have already told you what I knew about fatigue)

Sir: I think you did not understand what I was asking correctly (after this he explained to me what I had told earlier but from a different point of view. I was telling from the 'effect' point of view and he was explaining it from the 'cause' point of view. He explained me the same for 10 minutes and he seemed quite knowledgeable on that subject. It was more of discussion as I asked him once or twice about what he was speaking. He explained it to me in a very nice way and concluded that that he wanted the answer from the ‘Cause’ point of view.

Me: Okay sir.

Sir: Good. Okay now define for me 'Stress'.

Me: Sir, you are again asking me a definition

Sir: (Laughing) Don’t worry Just explain me

Me: So I started explaining him all about stress and everything

Next he used different objects on the table to apply force on points and asked me the stress state at different cross sections and some more questions about yield stress etc. which I answered correctly

Sir: Okay tell me about this project (from my resume)

Me: Again I rambled on. That project was kind of a goodwill project for disabled, which quite impressed him and he asked me why we weren't pursuing it as a start-up to which I answered from some lack of market, funding and competition point of view.

Sir: (He asked me then about some difficulties we might have faced during that project in management or team)

Me: (gave some examples and their solutions)

Sir: We seem to have talked quite a lot. Others might be waiting. Do you have any questions?

Me: No sir, if you want we can talk more as I have lots of time (at this point my phone vibrated, I ignored but he noticed and took his phone out to check)

Me: Sorry sir, this was my phone.

Sir: Laughing oh don’t worry, you can pick it up if it’s urgent.

Me: Not at all sir

Sir: Okay tell me what you did on Internship?

Me: (I explained everything in detail)

Me: (Past half hour all he had asked me about machine design & fatigue and everything) Sir does reliance do anything in Machine Design? (A stupid question to ask)

Sir: Nope, not at all.

Me: Sir, there might be some fatigue in pipe systems due to repeated pressure variance?

Sir: Yes there is, but we outsource that work (then he explained to me how difficult it is to outsource and maintain standards and all).

Me: Okay.

Sir: So, what would you work on at Reliance?

Me: Anything I can get my hands on...

Sir: Pumps?

Me: Definitely.

Sir: But you haven’t worked on them yet.

Me: Sir I haven’t had the opportunity yet, but whatever I got my hands on has been great until now.

Sir: So are you a ‘desk job’ sort of person or ‘field job’ type of person?

Me: Sir, even though I had a good JEE rank, I didn’t choose the branch computer science but chose Mechanical because I wanted to work in the field. I have been participating in BAJA events all these years.

Sir: Good (Smiling, but then he and I were smiling pretty much whole the interview)

Sir: If I give you a pump, can you open it up?

Me: In two minutes sir.

Sir: We have spent a lot of time, if you have any questions you can ask me.

Me: No sir, thanks for the opportunity.

Sir: Ask me something if you want to.

Me: Sir, any feedback on my interview? This was my first (A second stupid question)

Sir: He smiled and said you will receive the feedback in the evening

Me: Thank you Sir!

Interview Process
Test Technical Interview HR Interview
Round 1

Test

Interview Experience
the test had aptitude and technical sections in equal parts. the aptitude part was very easy, you have to score almost full in this section if you are from IITs. The technical part was also easy, but you have to get your basics right to score well in the test.Once you got through the test round, you have great chances of getting the job.During my placement, they selected people who scored above 90%.
Interview Tips
In the technical round, all the topics will be covered, so you should be clear with your basics in all the topics.I had to put special attention on topics such as pumps since it was not taught for us.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
If you have an above average CGPA, they try really hard to eliminate you in the technical round, so brace yourself and be ready for it.If you are an average pointer, you will find it relatively easy, you will get through the round provided you don't show your stupidity.
Mine was a stress interview right from the start, they didn't agree upon whatever I said. In fact at one point one of the interviewer turned towards another and just said "yeh kuch bhi boltha hai yaar". At the end I got through. I attribute my success to the tolerance and patience I showed during the interview.Whatever they say try not to give up and try to answer their questions in a crisp manner.
They asked questions about my projects as well as questions on application of chemical engineering in the industry.

Skill Tips
If you aim for Reliance, preparing for GATE really helps you.
General Tips
Especially for this company people need not bother about their communication skills. If you just can communicate your ideas in english that's suffice.
Motivation for applying
Wanted to do work in core chemical engineering. And in reliance, since it has the largest petroleum refinery in Asia you will have great learning oppurtunity.
Funny Moments
In my first round of interview, they really tried to stress me out. At one point in the interview they looked as if they were not interested in whatever I say and one of the interviewer tried to show that intent by telling the other interviewer "Yeh kuch bhi boltha hai yaar"(He is bullshitting). But since I knew that I was not bullshitting, I didn't yield to the stress and answered all the questions patiently.

In the HR round, since there was a point about chemistry Olympiad, they asked me a question on chemistry. I didn't really know the answer but I tried to answer it. The interviewer was a chemistry graduate and she got visibly angry at my effort of answering. She yelled at me and created an impression I screwed it up.But at the end she suddenly burst into a laugh and told that I got the job.Happy ending atleast :)

Aptitude:
Time was short. 3O Qs in 30 minutes was a time-crunch.  As my aptitude is weak, I had put in prior efforts to put up a decent performance. I could solve around 14-15 Qs in that time.

Technical:
50 Qs in 30 minutes. The Qs were fairly on easier side. Just that, Qs spanned all across chemical engineering, with almost equal weightage on all topics. Most Qs were from past years' GATE papers. I attempted around 40 Qs.
