Reliance GET ( GRADUATE ENGINEER TRAINEE ) interview
Sir: Good afternoon have a seat.
Me: Thank you Sir, How are you?
Sir: I am good, thanks. So tell me something about yourself.
Me: Sir I (So I started about my family background, parents and everything while he looked over my resume, I had prepared to leave the answer on BAJA as that was my strong point, but he interrupted me in the middle only)
Sir: I see that you have done a lot of work on fatigue. (3 projects, internship and area of interest, I had forgotten to modify my resume for Reliance) Can you define for me what fatigue is?
Me: Sure sir (so I start to explain him fatigue and its analysis, how and what I had done in my projects etc.)
Sir: That is correct, but you still haven’t given me the definition of fatigue.
Me: Sir, (I again started to explain it to him and most of the conversation was in Hindi).
From here on most of the interview was in Hindi and also informal in terms of the tone.
Sir: You are running around the bush but not telling me the definition of fatigue (from here on whole interview was kind of informal)
Me: Sir, have a look at my CGPA do you think I will remember definition but I guarantee you that I know the practical aspect of things. I believe in learning by doing.
Sir: I never asked you to give me a bookish definition
Me: Sir, I have already told you what I knew about fatigue)
Sir: I think you did not understand what I was asking correctly (after this he explained to me what I had told earlier but from a different point of view. I was telling from the 'effect' point of view and he was explaining it from the 'cause' point of view. He explained me the same for 10 minutes and he seemed quite knowledgeable on that subject. It was more of discussion as I asked him once or twice about what he was speaking. He explained it to me in a very nice way and concluded that that he wanted the answer from the ‘Cause’ point of view.
Me: Okay sir.
Sir: Good. Okay now define for me 'Stress'.
Me: Sir, you are again asking me a definition
Sir: (Laughing) Don’t worry Just explain me
Me: So I started explaining him all about stress and everything
Next he used different objects on the table to apply force on points and asked me the stress state at different cross sections and some more questions about yield stress etc. which I answered correctly
Sir: Okay tell me about this project (from my resume)
Me: Again I rambled on. That project was kind of a goodwill project for disabled, which quite impressed him and he asked me why we weren't pursuing it as a start-up to which I answered from some lack of market, funding and competition point of view.
Sir: (He asked me then about some difficulties we might have faced during that project in management or team)
Me: (gave some examples and their solutions)
Sir: We seem to have talked quite a lot. Others might be waiting. Do you have any questions?
Me: No sir, if you want we can talk more as I have lots of time (at this point my phone vibrated, I ignored but he noticed and took his phone out to check)
Me: Sorry sir, this was my phone.
Sir: Laughing oh don’t worry, you can pick it up if it’s urgent.
Me: Not at all sir
Sir: Okay tell me what you did on Internship?
Me: (I explained everything in detail)
Me: (Past half hour all he had asked me about machine design & fatigue and everything) Sir does reliance do anything in Machine Design? (A stupid question to ask)
Sir: Nope, not at all.
Me: Sir, there might be some fatigue in pipe systems due to repeated pressure variance?
Sir: Yes there is, but we outsource that work (then he explained to me how difficult it is to outsource and maintain standards and all).
Sir: So, what would you work on at Reliance?
Me: Anything I can get my hands on...
Sir: But you haven’t worked on them yet.
Me: Sir I haven’t had the opportunity yet, but whatever I got my hands on has been great until now.
Sir: So are you a ‘desk job’ sort of person or ‘field job’ type of person?
Me: Sir, even though I had a good JEE rank, I didn’t choose the branch computer science but chose Mechanical because I wanted to work in the field. I have been participating in BAJA events all these years.
Sir: Good (Smiling, but then he and I were smiling pretty much whole the interview)
Sir: If I give you a pump, can you open it up?
Me: In two minutes sir.
Sir: We have spent a lot of time, if you have any questions you can ask me.
Me: No sir, thanks for the opportunity.
Sir: Ask me something if you want to.
Me: Sir, any feedback on my interview? This was my first (A second stupid question)
Sir: He smiled and said you will receive the feedback in the evening
Me: Thank you Sir!
