Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: tell me about yourself?
  • Question 2: Why do u want to join RIL?
  • Question 3: why the gibbs free energy is called free energy?
  • Question 4: what are the maxwell's equations?
  • Question 5: Some questions from conduction
  • Question 6: Designing of Distillation Column?
Interview Experience
Overall my interview experience is good. I gave around 70 percent of the answers. My interview is purely technical but it was not so with my friend. His interview is 90% HR.So u never know what type of interview u r going to face when u walk in there. In my interview the questions were mostly asked from thermodynamics and its applications.
Interview Tips
Be calm and confident.Try not to get nervous.Never try to attempt the questions of which u don't know the answers. Attempting those questions and thereafter not giving answers properly gives a bad impression.

  • Confidence
  • Time Management
  • Communication
Skill Tips
Do not get nervous in the interview.Do not try to solve the whole technical paper rather go through it and attempt the questions u think u can do.For improving communication skill, try to communicate with ur friends in English. Read newspaper and communicate with urself in mirror ( this method will particularly help u a lot in improving ur communication skills and will also free u from any kind of presentation fears).
Resources

Preparation materials

Books
  • Mass transfer by treybal,
  • heat transfer by B.K, Dutta,
  • Octave lenenspiel,
  • Any book for Gate preparation ,
  • Unit operations by McCabe Smith(most important),
General Tips
As I previously told try to remain calm and not get nervous. If u do so no one can take that job from u.And by chance u don't get selected, then do not get disheartened and just think about ur mistakes and try to improve them as U are the best judge of yourself.
Motivation for applying
yeah RIL is a very good company, very large and with a lot of scope. So just go for it as if u want to build ur repo then it is one of the best platform to do so.
Funny Moments
one of my friend got injured before the interview. So when he entered for the interview,HR saw his hand and asked what happened. So he hold HR that he got slipped on stairs. After that HR said to him "khudko ko sambhal nhi pa rhe company ko kya sambhaloge".. So try not to lose ur senses if u face such kind of things .They just purposely do that to check how u can perform under pressure. And that friend of mine was also selected for the job.

Round 1

Test

Test Sections
    Interview Experience
the test had aptitude and technical sections in equal parts. the aptitude part was very easy, you have to score almost full in this section if you are from IITs. The technical part was also easy, but you have to get your basics right to score well in the test.Once you got through the test round, you have great chances of getting the job.During my placement, they selected people who scored above 90%.
    Interview Tips
In the technical round, all the topics will be covered, so you should be clear with your basics in all the topics.I had to put special attention on topics such as pumps since it was not taught for us.
    Round 2

    Technical Interview

    Interview Questions
      Interview Experience
If you have an above average CGPA, they try really hard to eliminate you in the technical round, so brace yourself and be ready for it.If you are an average pointer, you will find it relatively easy, you will get through the round provided you don't show your stupidity.
Mine was a stress interview right from the start, they didn't agree upon whatever I said. In fact at one point one of the interviewer turned towards another and just said "yeh kuch bhi boltha hai yaar". At the end I got through. I attribute my success to the tolerance and patience I showed during the interview.Whatever they say try not to give up and try to answer their questions in a crisp manner.
They asked questions about my projects as well as questions on application of chemical engineering in the industry.

        General Tips
Especially for this company people need not bother about their communication skills. If you just can communicate your ideas in english that's suffice.
        Motivation for applying
Wanted to do work in core chemical engineering. And in reliance, since it has the largest petroleum refinery in Asia you will have great learning oppurtunity.
        Funny Moments
In my first round of interview, they really tried to stress me out. At one point in the interview they looked as if they were not interested in whatever I say and one of the interviewer tried to show that intent by telling the other interviewer "Yeh kuch bhi boltha hai yaar"(He is bullshitting). But since I knew that I was not bullshitting, I didn't yield to the stress and answered all the questions patiently.

In the HR round, since there was a point about chemistry Olympiad, they asked me a question on chemistry. I didn't really know the answer but I tried to answer it. The interviewer was a chemistry graduate and she got visibly angry at my effort of answering. She yelled at me and created an impression I screwed it up.But at the end she suddenly burst into a laugh and told that I got the job.Happy ending atleast :)

        Interview Tips
In Aptitude, try to do problems that you are sure of first, don't waste too much time on one question. Prepare well the topics like Number System, Probability, Profit-Loss and others. For Technical, prepare thoroughly topics like Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Mass & Heat Transfer and Chemical Reaction Engineering.
        Round 2

        HR Interview

        Interview Questions
          Interview Experience
There was a combined HR + Technical Interview. It proceeded very smoothly. Firstly he asked my general introduction, after that he moved on to extra curricular activities that u did in your college days. Next, he asked me some questions related to Industrial Training and finally some questions related to technical topics of your particular subject. In the end, he asked me if I wanted to ask something from him and I asked. That,s all and the interview was over.
          Interview Tips
First of all, be confident, do not panic while talking to interviewer, keep proper eye contact, be honest - means do not try to manipulate him ; if you do not know the answer or are not able to recall it.. simply say no to the interviewer. Prepare your Industrial Training properly. Do not give false information about yourself. Overall, be cool and confident... I am sure you will have greater chances to crack interview.

          No. of Questions
          80 questions
          Test Sections
          • Section 1: Technical + Aptitude
          Interview Experience
          Aptitude:
Time was short. 3O Qs in 30 minutes was a time-crunch.  As my aptitude is weak, I had put in prior efforts to put up a decent performance. I could solve around 14-15 Qs in that time.

          Technical:
50 Qs in 30 minutes. The Qs were fairly on easier side. Just that, Qs spanned all across chemical engineering, with almost equal weightage on all topics. Most Qs were from past years' GATE papers. I attempted around 40 Qs.
          Interview Tips
          1. For aptitude, prepare well in advance if you are weak.
          2. Strengthen technical by solving MCQs from Indiabix.com
          3. Since there are no negatives, go for most Qs.
          Round 2

          Technical Interview

          Interview Questions
          • Question 1: 1. Some basic Qs on Fluid like: which pump would you use for high head? On what parameters efficiency of pump depend?
          • Question 2: 2. What were the unit operations used in the plant I did my summer training?
          • Question 3: 3. A numerical on Black body radiation. There are 2 bodies one absorbing 0.4 of others’ energy and the other absorbing .6 by another. (I had solved the Q by view factor method)
          • Question 4: 4. Some Qs on design of heat exchanger. How would the heat transfer coefficient change when baffle spacing is changed? What are other such important factors?
          • Question 5: 5. What is catalytic hydrocracking? And related Qs. Whether it is endothermic or exo?
          • Question 6: 6. What is the significance of Viscosity Index of lube?
          • Question 7: What are the different kinds of distillation you know?
          • Question 8: What factors will you take in consideration to check evaporator efficiency?
          Interview Experience
I had a good technical interview. Most of the Qs were logical. The interviewer made sure I was comfortable through out the interview, each Qs was followed by a light Q.
          Interview Tips
          1. Be cool as a cucumber. 2. Be thorough with all subjects.3.  If you think you don't know answer, think logically.4. Try to deviate the Qs to your strengths.
