Round 1

Test

Duration
60 Minutes
No. of Questions
50 questions
Test Sections
  • Section 1: Quantitative Ability (20)
  • Section 2: Quantitative Ability (20)
  • Section 3: Programming Skills (10)
Interview Experience
The Quant and Programming sections were long but fairly easy; I pretty much sailed through them. However, the core EC section was really lengthy and not so easy, and also had negative marking. I was able to complete the first 2 sections completely, and around 11/20 questions in the core section.
The Quant section touched basic topics like probability, algebra and simple geometry. Programming questions were quite syntax-based, rather than algorithm-based. In the core section, the focus was on device physics and digital electronics, including combinational/sequential circuits and microprocessors.
Interview Tips
1. Practice Quantitative sections. A LOT. Speed is of the essence in these sections, because almost everyone is on the same level as you are where mathematics is concerned.
2. Know the basic syntax of C++, that is the most common language you're tested on in the Programming section. Also know simple data structures and complexity calculations.
3. The core section is the most important one, so make sure your knowledge is sound and practice solving digital circuits as fast as you can.
4. The EC section is generally quite lengthy, so quickly flip through the questions once and then figure out what questions you can do for sure, finish those and then start on the remaining ones. DO NOT STAY ON ONE QUESTION FOR TOO LONG, because you won't even be able to haphazardly guess on the other questions because of the negative marking.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Explain the difference between Moore and Mealy state models.
  • Question 2: Explain the difference between Moore and Mealy state models.
  • Question 3: Draw the state diagram and the clocked D-flipflop circuit for a 0110 sequence detector.
  • Question 4: What is parity and how is it used? Draw the circuit diagram for a parity checker.
  • Question 5: Design a memory organization given the size and block units.
  • Question 6: Draw the circuit diagram for a random number generator.
  • Question 7: What is a Schmitt trigger/inverter?
  • Question 8: Arrange the inputs to AND gates so that power usage is optimized/delay is optimized.
  • Question 9: Draw the CMOS circuit for a given logic equation and do the corresponding W/L sizing.
  • Question 10: Draw a circuit for a set of logic equations using PLA.
  • Question 11: Draw and talk about a basic SRAM cell.
  • Question 12: Given the delays for gates and wires, draw output waveforms for the given logic circuit.
  • Question 13: What is Min-Cut placement algorithm? Given some block sizes, use the algorithm to place them on a given chip area.
  • Question 14: Given a clock waveform of frequency f, design a circuit to get an output of frequency f/3.
Interview Experience
I had only one round of technical interview. The interviewer was a person who'd worked at Qualcomm for around 5 years, as a Senior Engineer. The questions were not too tough, but challenging enough that you had to be quick at circuit evaluations. I wasn't able to solve all the questions completely, but talking aloud really helped, the interviewer himself would pass on hints or correct me sometimes if I went too far off on a tangent.
All in all, the interview lasted for about 45 minutes and was tiring but really fun if you like EC. For the first time, I realized that I actually knew electronics after studying it for 4 years! ;)
Interview Tips
1. Many people must have said this to you, but I'll say it again: Don't be too nervous. The questions are asked in such a way that you will definitely not be able to do all of them, so don't freak if you miss something here and there, they know it too!
2. Make sure you have the basics of logic gates, sequential design and digital VLSI circuits down pat when you're preparing for the interview. These are the main areas they are looking for in the VLSI Electronics interviews. Apart from these, a knowledge of Computer Architecture and basic VLSI CAD wouldnn't hurt!
3. I can't emphasize this enough: Talk out when thinking. It is very important for the interviewers to know what kind of technical logic you use when working out problems, and most often they start talking with you, which leads to an insightful discussion rather than a Q&A session.
4. Make sure your interest in the field also comes across; as far as I saw, they're looking for people who actually like EC and will be able to work hours together without getting bored of it (Well, not too much :P)
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Explain a little about your M.Tech. project.
  • Question 2: What do you know about Qualcomm?
  • Question 3: Have you ever worked in groups? What kind of work was it?
Interview Experience
The HR interview wasn't really an interview; it was more of a 15-minute discussion with an HR person. He was basically looking to see whather I would be able to fit into a team-oriented work environment and add something to it, that's all. Apart from that, there was mostly a discussion on the package breakdown, and the kind of work and teams we could be involved with in Qualcomm.
Interview Tips
1. Know something about Qualcomm, so that you're able to answer the first question they'll mostly ask.
2. This round is set to get to know you, so clear all your doubts and ask as many questions as you want.
3. Once again, try to express your interest in working in the field of electronics; if your passion shows, this round is pretty much cleared!
Resources

Preparation materials

Books
  • CMOS Digital Integrated Circuits (Kang: McGraw Hill),
  • Digital Circuits (Morris Mano),
  • VLSI Test Principles and Architectures (Wang/Wen),
  • Computer Architecture (Patterson),
Courses
  • Coursera: VLSI CAD - Logic to Layout,
General Tips
1. Be sure you're interested in EC before applying to Qualcomm for the VLSI profile.

2. For the test, speed is of the essence; practice solving different question sets in as less time as possible.

3. For the interview(s), don't be nervous, talk aloud, and have a sound technical base to build upon.
Motivation for applying
I've always been interested in Electronics, ever since I studied the 8085 Microprocessor in the 12th Grade. Even when I joined IITKGP, I changed my Department to Electronics after my first year, because that's what I wanted to study!

Circuit design is one of the most interesting and challenging fields in today's electronics field, and I would love to see what happens, and be a part of it. Especially since right now we're on the verge of a big change - we're close to moving away from silicon-based designs; what happens next?

Qualcomm HARDWARE ENGINEER (VLSI) interview

Application
I was interviewed on-campus for HARDWARE ENGINEER (VLSI) role at Qualcomm
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Test HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
I had a standard 2-page resume as per the standard format required by the institute placement cell. The areas of interest that you mention in the resume should change according to the job profile being offered by the company.
Round 2

Test

Interview Experience
The first round of the selection process for Qualcomm was an online written test. I decided to appear for the hardware engineer (VLSI) profile. The test comprised of three sections. The first two sections – general aptitude and basic programming (C/C++) are same regardless of the profile you choose for the test. These two sections are quite simple. The general aptitude section comprises of objective questions like which figure will follow the given pattern and some other logical questions. The basic programming section consists of simple questions based on C/C++ like what would be the output of the given code, some questions on algorithms and sorting.

The third section is although said to be based on VLSI, but most of the questions asked are from analog electronics, digital electronics and microprocessors. The difficulty level varies from easy to medium difficulty. If you would have revised the topics well, you would be able to answer most of the questions correctly.
Interview Tips
Electrical Engineering students should appear for the VLSI profile as its written test is the easiest of the three profiles being offered and most of the questions in the written test are based on topics that are covered in the Electrical Engineering curriculum.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Experience
After the written test, the next round was an interview round. I worked on the mistakes I had made in interviews earlier and was a lot more confident this time around.
Some of the technical questions asked were related to:
Time domain analysis of waveform
Digital Electronics
Programming language VHDL
Some questions on the basics of VLSI
As I had already studied the subject Embedded Systems and had done a few related projects as well, I was able to answer most of the questions.
For the interview, I did put in a lot of effort in the preparation. Apart from the technical questions one should prepare for the HR type questions as well. I prepared answers for some typical HR type questions. One need not be completely spontaneous while answering questions in the interview. Having some points in your mind about what you want to say and how do you want to say it, always helps.
As I was interested in core companies and software companies, I prepared topics like C++ and Data Structures and practiced questions available on the internet.
Interview Tips
Although I graduated in Electrical Engineering and the company’s work is more into electronics, I was still able to get through because I was able to answer the questions asked and hence prove that I have the necessary skills. Your branch wouldn't be much of a problem during the selection process, if you are able to prove that you have the necessary skill set required by the company.
General Tips
I started preparing for placements in the month of November. I revised topics like Electrical Machines, Microprocessors and Digital Electronics from my own notes. The notes or standard text books are sufficient to prepare for the selection process of any core electrical/Electronics Company.

Also apart from some standard textbooks, one can always search on the internet for questions, either general or specifically those that have been previously asked in that company’s selection process. Questions asked in the interview are more or less the same as those found on the internet. For the written test, revise data structures C/C++, methods of sorting, basics of algorithms, operating systems etc. For the interview you should revise embedded systems, basic electronics and digital electronics.
Motivation for applying
I got to know about the company profile from some of my friends and seniors working at the company. I also browsed through their website.

Test Technical Interview HR Interview
Round 1

Test

No. of Questions
60 questions
Interview Experience
Aptitude section won't be a problem.Questions were simple and straight forward.
Decent knowledge of C and C++ will be enough to answer the Programming section.
I chose communication in the 3rd section.I was expecting questions related to signal processing. But most of the questions were related to communication like modulation, quantization level, Shanon's therom etc.The course wasn't done yet for us.So I was able to answer only 5-6 questions and the remaining I took some calculated guesses to the best of my knowledge
Interview Tips
Select communication profile only if you had done a proper communication course.Signals and Systems & Digital Signal Processing courses won't be enough. While preparing concentrate on one area and prepare well.It will be useful for both exam as well as the interview. While answering the 1st two sections of the test time management is important as the questions are easy and given the time everyone can answer all the questions
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
I attended the technical interviews for both Communication and Software profiles.
For the communication profile it's advantageous to remember transformations for some common functions. And you need to have clarity about what you are doing. The basics should be strong.
The Software interview was chill. All the questions were about basic C.And for some guys puzzles were asked
Interview Tips
A good resume always helps you out in some situations.I kind of cupped in the Comm round. But in the Software round in the beginning of the interview itself she asked about my areas of interest and my projects. She asked me to explain in detail about one of the projects of my choice and she was really impressed with the idea of that project. After that the interview was chill only
Round 3

Interview Experience
The HR was very important, because even a very small mistake can send you out of the race for job.the questions asked to me were:
1) why do you want to join QUALCOMM.
2)Why don't you go for higher studies.
3) where do you see yourself after three years.
4) do you have any problem, if posting is given at hyderabad.
5) would you like to work in the software section in QUALCOMM.
6)what did you like in my presentation. Then he explained me all about the companies, the performance based promotion policies and about the work culture.
General Tips
The aptitude paper was not that difficult. speed and accuracy were important. the panel members were very polite and encouraging. The time for which the each interview went was around 15-20 minutes, you have to make sure to impress them in that short time. It was great to give your best throughout the day and get selected in the end. I thank god,my parents and all of u for all the support.

Try to practice aptitude questions at least 2 months before the placements start. be thorough with C,OOPS concepts. Basic knowledge of DS and OS are also very useful. try to do a good project and training. once you enter the interview room, everything is useful. don't say you are going for higher studies. have faith in god, your well wishers and above all in yourself. that's all. see you all in QUALCOMM. ALL THE BEST !

Round 1

Test

Interview Experience
Online test consists of 3 parts:
1) Aptitude
2) programming (C/C++, Data Structures)
3) Technical.
No negative marking. Apti and programming parts were easy. There were three different technical sections forthree different profiles: 1) Hardware 2) Communication/DSP 3) Software.I appeared for 2nd profile. In this, the technical section had question mostly from DSP, few from communication, analog circuits, digital circuits etc. Each section was given different amount of time. Time for the Technical section was less and I felt that this section was the deciding factor in short listing. There was a CGPA cutoff of 7.5 . My CGPA was 8.75.
Round 2

Interview

Interview Experience
There were 3 rounds of interview out of which 2 were technical and 1 was HR round. Asked about thesis, term papers, trainings, and question on Digital logic circuits: to design FSM, designing simple logic circuits, delay & its calculation in the digital circuit, MOS etc. Few communication related questions, some puzzles and apti questions. In HR, they asked common HR questions like about yourself, Why qualcomm, training experience, any specific location preference etc. both the technical rounds were almost 40 minutes long and HR was 20 minutes.
General Tips
1) Should be clear about your M.Tech thesis, B.Tech project, summer training, Term papers. Understand their terminologies and concepts since almost all companies ask about it.

2) For aptitude preparation, solve the material available in preparation portal, can see for online aptitude tests and puzzles and along with that appear honestly in the mock tests organized by SPO. Aim on accuracy and speed.

3) For Programming preparation, revise basic concepts of C and DS, you can use book by Denis Ritche, Yeshwant Kanetkar. Solve online mock programming tests, so you get aware of standard questions andmost common mistakes. Try to write some codes while preparing so that you will be confident writing infront of interviewer, especially of DS like linked list, trees, sorting, searching etc. I did not prepare for OS,but most of the software companies do ask questions on it. Galvin is the standard book for OS.

4) Technical: very vast field includes all the course and practical knowledge you have been studying. Basicconcepts should be clear. Prepare Digital circuit design, Communication, Wireless Communication, DSP,

Computer networks, and most importantly subjects of your interest 

5) Do prepare in groups, it will help you in clearing your doubts and also it will improve your interview skills. Mock interviews are also organized for your confidence building.
