  • Question 1: Which is the extensively used motor in general?(in general it is I.M)
  • Question 2: Draw the speed torque characteristics of I.M
  • Question 3: Define slip, synchronous speed and how does sync speed depends on no of poles?
  • Question 4: What happens to speed of I.M if load is increased?
  • Question 5: Why should not be the slip not zero in I.M?(finally asked me entire working principle of I.M).
  • Question 6: What are the protections used for a generator?
  • Question 7: Why the protection of generator should be used given that drawing of power from bus bar is allowed
  • Question 8: What is U.P.S?Where is it used?
  • Question 9: Do you know about 'variable frequency drives' ?
  • Question 10: What are the various precautions to be taken to connecting transformers in parallel?
Interview Experience
First of all they asked me what are all the subjects in which I am perfect.I said them all related to Power Systems. One of the interviewer asked me if I had touch with Power Electronics.I said I had idea, then he asked me about
applications of thyristor and why is it used.Questions asked were: Which is the extensively used motor in general?(in general it is I.M) .Draw the speed torque characteristics of I.M.Define slip, synchronous speed and how does sync speed depends on no of poles? What happens to speed of I.M if load is increased? Why should not be the slip not zero in I.M?(finally asked me entire working principle of I.M).[This is where I impressed him that he said me very good] What are the protections used for a generator?(I listed all the ones i have studied. While i was saying about relay for protection for failure of prime mover of generator ,the interviewer asked me why the protection of generator should be used given that drawing of power from bus bar is allowed,I was little struck here but to my luck the other interviewer interrupted and asked me following questions ]How do you determine direction of rotation of motor using hands?(F.L.H AND F.R.H). What is U.P.S?where is it used?(uninterrupted power supply) Do you know about 'variable frequency drives' ..(actually this from subject which we were taught in 4-1 and still not taught,I said the same to them) What are the various precautions to be taken to connecting transformers in parallel?
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: My family background
  • Question 2: My schooling
Interview Experience
The interview for eee guys was scheduled on 27th.I had to wait all the first day for my turn..but i was informed that my interview was on next day...even i waited for my friends interview and asked how were the interviewers and what all questions they were asking..My friends told me that they were asked simple questions regarding basics..So, i felt comfortable and slept...I am the 2nd person to be interviewed on the second day..while the first guy was sent inside i was made to sit alone..So, i was little tensed sitting alone..After 15 minutes i was called for the interview ..there were 7 people siting in the panel with the chairman at the center...Starting from the first question i answered the questions with confidence with a supporting reason for my answer...This was why i impressed the panel(explanation of principle of I.M). The thing i need to stress you guys is that i was the 2nd from the last in general category shortlisted...So,i say i say that even you don't have cgpa your selection can be influenced by your performance in interview..Of course having cgpa doesn't hurt..it plays am important role in PSUs.. I was interviewed only for 10 minutes..but everyone was interviewed for minimum of 15-20 minutes..So the duration of interview has nothing to do for your selection...
Skills

Skills Tested

    General Tips
First thing when you are for the interview you should know of yourself..The most general question in any interview is "tell me about yourself"... Be strong with your basics...Most probably you may be asked for favorite subject. So, you need to be it careful while picking up your subject...The thing is you need not answer all the questions but your answers should not mess up with basics...Answer with confidence the questions you know and at the same time be sincere to say "i don't know" when you don't know the answer...Never try to bluff the panel...Rather you can answer in such a way that the interviewer moves to a topic in which you are familiar. If you have have any projects or IT..you should have thorough knowledge of them.Don't panic if you don't have any projects but if you have see that you are well prepared in that...(i did not have any project except IT) Be careful while answering HR questions..they may ask questions like "what would you do if we do not offer you job" It's better to say them that i would try through off campus ...that shows your loyalty.Do not disclose any of your B school plans or GRE plans even they ask for it.say them that you are interested in job and not in further studies...You can refer to net for many HR questions asked in interview... You should have knowledge of the company you are going to attend before hand. That helps you a lot.. For EEE guys you better read PSP and Power Systems thoroughly before going to interview One last thing is that the interviewer asks if you hava any questions..then try to ask some questions rather than saying no questions..ask some relevant questions.. K guys bye...all the best for your future career

Both HR and technical interview was combined. Asked my favorite subjects. The technical questions asked were as
follows.1.Explain Rankine cycle 2.Which cycle is used for power generation from gas?3.Efficiency of a Rankine cycle and how can you improve the efficiency of Rankine cycle. 4.Compare efficiencies of Rankine and Brayton cycle. 5. Explain the different classification of turbines.Since I told my favourite subject as vibration analysis they asked me questions from condition monitoring.6.What are methods of condition monitoring.7.Explain how conditionmonitoring is done using vibration analysis. 8. How do you measure amplitudes and frequencies of any vibrating element? 9.How do you separate different frequency components in vibration measurement?Interview was very easy. They didn't go much deep into the subject. They just asked basics. The interview panel were very friendly and very responsive too. They appreciated the way I answered. Since I did my training in a Nuclear Power Plant it was an added advantage. They got an impression that I knew about a power plant. They were kind enough to ask my favourite subject. I was able to prove them in every answer I gave in HR interview that I was interested in power plant. It's very important.

      General Tips
I would advice you to identify your tastes and interests and accordingly sit for a company. There are lot of

opportunities. So decide which one suits you the most. While attending interviews try to prove yourself that you are really interested in that field. Prepare your resume well. While telling about your favorite subject tell a subject based on the company profile and don't just tell a single subject, tell two or three. Be thorough in your basic subjects. Present yourself neatly. Answer the HR questions carefully. They will look to trap you there. Finally don't worry much. Each interview is different and varies from person to person and this is just an example. WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

      Round 1

      Technical Interview

      Interview Questions
        Interview Experience
There were questions on the project done. A real time problem was posed and was asked to solve it using the knowledge of the project. The were technical questions on the basics of DSP and DICA like, What are the different analog to digital and digital to analog conversion techniques? what is the basic principle in DSP? Fourier transforms What are the basic blocks in a DSP? Sampling , Quantization and Encoding etc. In the end he asked me if I was willing to work at NTPC in the micro controller and programming applications. to which i readily agreed.

I had to apply for the company through a separate resume as prescribed by the company. There was a retired IAS officer in the selection panel . He was the chairman of the selection committee at NTPC. We had a pre placement talk at 5 pm on the previous day we were called for the interview. There were 12 students short listed for the interview from ECE department. Out of them ,only 9 turned up.There were technical people to ask questions separately for each of the branches.Applications from the students from branches of ECE, EEE and Mechanical were invited. The interviews for the ECE department started after EEE and Mechanical were done. I had a interview of hardly 20 minutes.I was made very comfortable in the interview and did not panic at any point of time. The results were out soon after the interviews finished. I was happy when my name was read out in the list of students selected for the job. There were 4 students selected from ECE. One from each category, General, OBC, SC and ST.
        Round 2

        HR Interview

        Interview Questions
          Interview Experience
The HR round did not look very formal. I didn't even know when it started. When I entered the room , I saw around 7 to 8 people. I had to greet each of them and then took my seat when asked to. Then the selection committee chairman took my resume out, which was already given to him, and looked at my address. It said Kaghaznagar . He asked me about my father and my place of schooling and intermediate. I replied. Then having seen my address and schooling done near Ramagundam, he asked about my visit to NTPC. I told him that I did not go inside but had a view from outside. He asked me what I thought about the tall structures at NTPC. Later I learned that they were built to send out steam. Then he was impressed with my marks in the 10th and 12th classes but was not happy when he looked into my gradual decrease in the cgpa. Any way I was partly successful in convincing him for the fall in my cgpa. After this, a person sitting next to him, probably the technical staff at NTPC , had a round of technical discussion with me which I was very much comfortable with.
          Skills

          Skills Tested

            General Tips
In the pre placement talk, NTPC was highlighted much. The salary was good enough and the compensations and benefits were convincing. He also indicated that the placement will be given mostly in remote and rural areas. He warned people looking to work from metros not to join in NTPC. He also gave me enough time to ponder over my decision of joining the company once I got selected in it. Cgpa was indeed a factor in the selection process but it was not everything. Good luck.

Still I was tensed and then few GK questions added to my tension as I could'nt answer a couple of them. Then technical round started and I answered few questions correct and was confused in answering a couple of them..So I said that sir I'm confused and forgot the answers and told them the theory for that answer. General Tips
Don't get excited and don't refer any book/notes when you are going to enter the room. Be calm and cool and don't show attitude inside the interview room. If u don't know anything then just say sir I can't recall now or forgot.Have a smile on your face when the panel members crack a joke on you. Speak slow but be to the point and make your sentences catching.

PS :- interview is just a discussion between the people whom you don't know. It just tests more of your character and a bit of your technical knowledge.

                  Interview Questions
                  • Question 1: Control of voltage in transmission line
                  • Question 2: Control of voltage in turbo generator
                  • Question 3: Wind energy frequency control
                  • Question 4: Can we tap lightning power ?If yes in how much time?

                  • Question 6: Brief details of my industrial training in BHEL
                  Interview Experience
Shortlisting was done on the basis of CGPA (mine was 9.38).There were 7 members in the interview room. All were friendly but the HR guy was staring at me.It was totally a nice experience. My interview was at 10.30 PM in the night .I entered the room with full of energy and a big smile on my face. They were very impressed by the way I presented myself in the interview, especially the way I replied when they asked '”Tell me about yourself and family background?””.””HR really matters”” because u need to give them a vivid picture of your 20 years life experience in few sentences. But there was one thing I felt would have been better if I had not done done that in the interview. When they asked me “”Which company would you choose NTPC or BHEL?””I replied ”” obviously NTPC because if I have to apply all the concepts and knowledge I have acquired in these 4 years, I strongly feel that NTPC is the right opportunity and moreover BHEL is just a manufacturing company”” Well what's wrong in this reply. There was one word that made a difference. Can u guess what it is...””JUST””…No sooner did I gave that reply than almost all the panel members said in unison that…..””u say it’s JUST a manufacturing company ( stressing on the word just)……if there is no BHEL then there is no NTPC………”” ……..then I tried to cover that saying……..””I just meant that BHEL is a part of the story while NTPC is the main story itself”.”But my overall performance dominated this small mistake I made,we tend to make mistakes, they don’t expect you to be ideal.I wanted to share this particular conversation with all of you so that it might be helpful to you.

Be confident.Have a brief outlook on all the topics u have covered in academics.Give replies with a innocent and a cute smile whenever required……””A SMILE CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE””…..If you do not know the answer frankly reply saying“”I DO NOT KNOW””.I have done the same when they asked me about wind energy frequency control. Don’t get tensed and do not give one word answers.Give short and sweet replies ALL THE BEST
