• Question 9: Do you know about 'variable frequency drives' ?
• Question 10: What are the various precautions to be taken to connecting transformers in parallel?
Interview Experience
First of all they asked me what are all the subjects in which I am perfect.I said them all related to Power Systems. One of the interviewer asked me if I had touch with Power Electronics.I said I had idea, then he asked me about
applications of thyristor and why is it used.Questions asked were: Which is the extensively used motor in general?(in general it is I.M) .Draw the speed torque characteristics of I.M.Define slip, synchronous speed and how does sync speed depends on no of poles? What happens to speed of I.M if load is increased? Why should not be the slip not zero in I.M?(finally asked me entire working principle of I.M).[This is where I impressed him that he said me very good] What are the protections used for a generator?(I listed all the ones i have studied. While i was saying about relay for protection for failure of prime mover of generator ,the interviewer asked me why the protection of generator should be used given that drawing of power from bus bar is allowed,I was little struck here but to my luck the other interviewer interrupted and asked me following questions ]How do you determine direction of rotation of motor using hands?(F.L.H AND F.R.H). What is U.P.S?where is it used?(uninterrupted power supply) Do you know about 'variable frequency drives' ..(actually this from subject which we were taught in 4-1 and still not taught,I said the same to them) What are the various precautions to be taken to connecting transformers in parallel?
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Questions
• Question 1: My family background
• Question 2: My schooling
Interview Experience
The interview for eee guys was scheduled on 27th.I had to wait all the first day for my turn..but i was informed that my interview was on next day...even i waited for my friends interview and asked how were the interviewers and what all questions they were asking..My friends told me that they were asked simple questions regarding basics..So, i felt comfortable and slept...I am the 2nd person to be interviewed on the second day..while the first guy was sent inside i was made to sit alone..So, i was little tensed sitting alone..After 15 minutes i was called for the interview ..there were 7 people siting in the panel with the chairman at the center...Starting from the first question i answered the questions with confidence with a supporting reason for my answer...This was why i impressed the panel(explanation of principle of I.M). The thing i need to stress you guys is that i was the 2nd from the last in general category shortlisted...So,i say i say that even you don't have cgpa your selection can be influenced by your performance in interview..Of course having cgpa doesn't hurt..it plays am important role in PSUs.. I was interviewed only for 10 minutes..but everyone was interviewed for minimum of 15-20 minutes..So the duration of interview has nothing to do for your selection...
Skills

Skills Tested

General Tips
First thing when you are for the interview you should know of yourself..The most general question in any interview is "tell me about yourself"... Be strong with your basics...Most probably you may be asked for favorite subject. So, you need to be it careful while picking up your subject...The thing is you need not answer all the questions but your answers should not mess up with basics...Answer with confidence the questions you know and at the same time be sincere to say "i don't know" when you don't know the answer...Never try to bluff the panel...Rather you can answer in such a way that the interviewer moves to a topic in which you are familiar. If you have have any projects or IT..you should have thorough knowledge of them.Don't panic if you don't have any projects but if you have see that you are well prepared in that...(i did not have any project except IT) Be careful while answering HR questions..they may ask questions like "what would you do if we do not offer you job" It's better to say them that i would try through off campus ...that shows your loyalty.Do not disclose any of your B school plans or GRE plans even they ask for it.say them that you are interested in job and not in further studies...You can refer to net for many HR questions asked in interview... You should have knowledge of the company you are going to attend before hand. That helps you a lot.. For EEE guys you better read PSP and Power Systems thoroughly before going to interview One last thing is that the interviewer asks if you hava any questions..then try to ask some questions rather than saying no questions..ask some relevant questions.. K guys bye...all the best for your future career

Application
I was interviewed on-campus for EXECUTIVE TRAINEE role at NTPC
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Test HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
While preparing the resume I ensured that I write my points in a short and simple manner. My motive behind this was that the reader understands what I want to convey in just one reading.
Interview Tips
Write all your points in a very compact manner. Mention all your activities, your achievements in sports, any distinguishing qualities like leadership and the likes. Also mention about your co-curricular activities in anti-chronological order.
Round 2

Test

Interview Experience
For the written test of NTPC I searched on the internet and found numerous questions posted by many previous NTPC applicants on different websites. I solved these questions and also tried to understand a general pattern in the questions asked. However finding these questions was not straight forward
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Questions
• Question 1: What are turbo generators?
• Question 2: In hydro-power plants which generators are used?
• Question 3: What are the categories of insulation?
• Question 4: What is Buchholz relay?
Interview Experience
Criteria for participation in recruitment process:
The company shortlisted candidates based on their CGPA. At the same time it was specified that the applicant should have passed all the courses. Interview Round: After the short listing process the company conducted only one round of interview. The interview panel comprised of 5 technical personnel and 2 to 3 HR personnel.
The panel began by asking me questions aimed at getting to know me. Unlike the other companies they did not ask me about my strengths or weaknesses neither did they ask me to speak about myself. They simply asked me stuff like ‘Where do you live?’ and some questions on my family background.
NTPC being a power company the technical questions were based on power system and generators. They also asked me to draw the leading phase diagram for generators.
I did not have a lot of clue regarding the last two questions since nothing of that sort had been taught in our course. Next they enquired about my internship. I did my second year internship at Vishakhapatnam in PLC (Programmable Logical Circuits). They asked me to specify the all software that I worked with and to name some other software that could be used in place of those presently being used. In my third year I did my internship in Italy, that internship was based on interfacing of smart grid. They grilled me heavily on that.

I answered the questions based on the knowledge that I possessed, for instance while I was asked a question “Why do you want to join NTPC?’ I answered it by mentioning the good points about NTPC, rather than why I am competent enough to join the company. Also they question you regarding your willingness to go and work in a remote location.
Interview Tips
Have a strong preparation for technical questions. If you are from electrical then have thorough knowledge of electrical machines and power systems and specifically power system protection. Also have lots of knowledge about the company and its activities.
One should be well prepared to answer a wide array of technical questions particularly from motors, power systems and generators.
Skills

Skills Tested

Motivation for applying
The profile offered to me was that of the executive trainee. The company brought out an application form for those interested in participating in their recruitment process. Then I did a research about the company from their official website and also got some information through other websites which I stumbled upon while doing a random search on the internet.

There are some companies that pay a lot of attention to one’s resume whereas the others are interested in knowing your knowledge about the company. NTPC falls in the latter category. Consequently, during the subsequent stages in the recruitment process I was asked a lot of questions pertaining to the work done by the company.

NTPC EXECUTIVE TRAINEE interview

AnonymousFresherSelected
Application
I was interviewed on-campus for EXECUTIVE TRAINEE role at NTPC
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
The applicants were expected to first fill up an application form. In the application form we were asked to mention our achievements (especially in the field of technology or related to our curriculum). Some of the candidates got selected for the interview round on the basis of their CGPA.
Since I was interested in getting recruited in a core company consequently I had built a technical resume. I had earlier worked in the consulting sector in a start-up – I did not include that in my resume. I refrained from adding any phony or funky stuff which people usually tend to do if they have previously worked in a consulting company. I prepared a simple resume.
Interview Tips
It is very essential for a person wanting to join NTPC to have a good knowledge regarding the company. NTPC is one of Asia’s leading power producing companies, consequently gaining information regarding the company isn’t a difficult task.
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Questions
• Question 1: Where do you live and describe the terrain of the place where you live in few words.
• Question 2: If we were to offer you posting in some remote areas would you be comfortable with it?
• Question 3: Why do you want to join NTPC?
Interview Experience
The interviewers started by asking me some HR questions initially. After this they moved over to technical questions. Since the company is mainly involved in power generation, they asked me a lot of questions based on synchronous motors. They asked me to draw the graph and vector diagrams of the synchronous motors. Next they asked me questions about my internships. My internship project was based on distribution transformers; thus they asked me questions pertaining to transformer parts and transformer protection. Some of the questions were:
1) What are the different components of a transformer?
2) How is the protection of a transformer done?
3) How is the synchronous generating protection done?
4) How is the protection of an induction motor done?
5) What are hot spots and how are these detected in a transformer?

The topics taught during the 1st semester of 4th year are particularly important from the safety perspective. I had also done a project on harmonics; correspondingly they asked me questions like:

1) Why do harmonics occur?
2) What are the ways to prevent harmonics?
They also posed a situation that if I were to explain the motors and generators and the difference between them to a layman, how would I do it.

Further they asked some basic questions on relay and inter-conversion between delta and star circuits. They also asked me to specify my opinions on some subjects that are taught to us in the first year like biotechnology whose knowledge acquired in first year proves to be futile in subsequent years.
Interview Tips
For technical questions be prepared for questions on motors, generations, transformers and power system protection.
For the HR question one need not do any specific preparation. However the company did enquire about each and every candidate’s family background. Hence be prepared for similar questions.
Skills

Skills Tested

Motivation for applying
One of my friends had done an internship in the company, from him i got to know about the workplace environment. Also I procured a lot of information regarding the company from some of my seniors who were placed in the company, they also assisted me by providing me with some useful insights regarding the recruitment procedure of the company.

While telling about your favorite subject tell a subject based on the company profile and don't just tell a single subject, tell two or three. Be thorough in your basic subjects. Present yourself neatly. Answer the HR questions carefully. They will look to trap you there. Finally don't worry much. Each interview is different and varies from person to person and this is just an example. WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
There were questions on the project done. A real time problem was posed and was asked to solve it using the knowledge of the project. The were technical questions on the basics of DSP and DICA like, What are the different analog to digital and digital to analog conversion techniques? what is the basic principle in DSP? Fourier transforms What are the basic blocks in a DSP? Sampling , Quantization and Encoding etc. In the end he asked me if I was willing to work at NTPC in the micro controller and programming applications. to which i readily agreed.

I had to apply for the company through a separate resume as prescribed by the company. There was a retired IAS officer in the selection panel . He was the chairman of the selection committee at NTPC. We had a pre placement talk at 5 pm on the previous day we were called for the interview. There were 12 students short listed for the interview from ECE department. Out of them ,only 9 turned up.There were technical people to ask questions separately for each of the branches.Applications from the students from branches of ECE, EEE and Mechanical were invited. The interviews for the ECE department started after EEE and Mechanical were done. I had a interview of hardly 20 minutes.I was made very comfortable in the interview and did not panic at any point of time. The results were out soon after the interviews finished. I was happy when my name was read out in the list of students selected for the job. There were 4 students selected from ECE. One from each category, General, OBC, SC and ST.
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Experience
The HR round did not look very formal. I didn't even know when it started. When I entered the room , I saw around 7 to 8 people. I had to greet each of them and then took my seat when asked to. Then the selection committee chairman took my resume out, which was already given to him, and looked at my address. It said Kaghaznagar . He asked me about my father and my place of schooling and intermediate. I replied. Then having seen my address and schooling done near Ramagundam, he asked about my visit to NTPC. I told him that I did not go inside but had a view from outside. He asked me what I thought about the tall structures at NTPC. Later I learned that they were built to send out steam. Then he was impressed with my marks in the 10th and 12th classes but was not happy when he looked into my gradual decrease in the cgpa. Any way I was partly successful in convincing him for the fall in my cgpa. After this, a person sitting next to him, probably the technical staff at NTPC , had a round of technical discussion with me which I was very much comfortable with.

General Tips
In the pre placement talk, NTPC was highlighted much. The salary was good enough and the compensations and benefits were convincing. He also indicated that the placement will be given mostly in remote and rural areas. He warned people looking to work from metros not to join in NTPC. He also gave me enough time to ponder over my decision of joining the company once I got selected in it. Cgpa was indeed a factor in the selection process but it was not everything. Good luck.

The paper was easy. The paper consists of 85 questions (technical-50, general ability-35) high score is required as it has 85% weightage for the final selection.
In technical you need to score atleast 40/50, In general ability you should score atleast 28. So you will get the call for G.D and PI easily (even less scorers also be called i.e; 55/85) but chances of getting selected are less.
I completed the technical part in the first 40 minutes. As had mostly theory related bits and some problems (can be solved with a single formula! (study Electronic measurements and instrumentation also)
I got enough time to solve general ability, I took time to think about the questions in patience they seems tough but if you got the basic well its easy. (men and work problem, proportionality problem, some gk questions (very easy ones no special preparation required)
Data interpretation seems difficult and time taking but you should solve this as every mark counts. I belong to general category I feel I have scored more than 75. The cut-off may be around 65 for general. 55 for obc not sure)I got call for G.D and PI.
Interview Tips
My advice for the aspirants is to prepare previous IES papers for technical section (I feel most PSUs take IES papers as reference). You can clear the written only If you score good in general ability as it is really deciding (Solving R.S Aggarwal models can do the aptitude, for reasoning apply brain, for vocabulary you should have sufficient time paper consists of paragraph questions, Data interpretation etc.)
Round 2

Group Discussion

Interview Experience
The G.D was a good one. I spoke very less. i neither took the initiation nor conclusion. I spoke in English (we can talk in either Hindi or English).
They have given two topics1. Caste based politics good or bad 2. Technology most used or abused. We chose the first one. I said just 2 to 3 points but I was very attentive during the G.D. It wasn't an elimination round(but had 5% weightage as I said earlier).
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
I was the first person to be interviewed. My mind was blank when I entered into interview. They (4 people including the head in panel) asked some questions related to favourite subject (I said Signals and systems), and some HR questions. Show patience if you are not able to answer the question you don't have to know everything. But try to understand what they are saying and respond well. If they ask about any experiences say about it (if you have relevant experience not software experiences) freshers will get an easy interview.
Interview Tips
Prepare your project, prepare for the industrial training if you have. Percentage in B.Tech also plays a prominent role. Learn well about NTPC.

General Tips
1. Know about the company, they are very keen on your knowledge of the company, basically shows how much you are interested in them
2. Read about NTPC being a ‘Navaratna’ and the only PSU in the Fortune 500
3. Do not mention your GRE score/CAT percentile in your resume, it is a cause of concern for them as it indicates you may drop for higher studies
4. Similarly, do not mention CPI on a four point scale in your resume.
5. Always be prepared with the information of the company before your interview. And use those points in your interview deliberately so that they know you know about the company and thus show your interest.
