I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Kanpur for Aut - assistant under training role at ITC
Interview Process
Group Discussion Technical Interview
Round 1

Group Discussion

Interview Experience
The GD was a typical ITC GD. The problem was similar to the one given during internship GDs. An old man died due to medical emergency and role of various factors up in hierarchy was described. His wife grieved because they did not save enough money for their old age. The doctor did not admit him earlier in accordance with the hospital rules. Similarly, the hospital administration had already exhausted its charitable funds and the government had reduced expenditure on health (the government was elected by the people on this basis as mentioned in their manifesto). Based on the information given, the group was required to rate people/organizations in terms of their responsibility for the old man’s death. Five minutes
were given in the beginning for individual ranking and 20 minutes for discussion and group ranking.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Do you know what it is like working in a factory?
  • Question 2: Do you realize how mundane and routine the job is?
  • Question 3: Have you ever been to a factory before?
  • Question 4: Why not higher studies ?
  • Question 5: Do you have ethical issues regarding working in a cigarette factory?
Interview Experience
There were two people in the panel: one from technical background and the other a HR manager. Having known that I was also appearing in other companies on day one, they asked me about which one will I choose if offered by both ITC and Intel. This point came up several times during the interview and resulted in a long debate.
Starting with my internship, they asked me about key learning and technical description of the project and its impact. Discussed leadership roles, long term goals, how does ITC fit into that etc. Questions based on what I had filled in the form were asked, reasons why I did not opt for other options (higher studies, IAS, I-banks) and so on.
General Tips
Most of the times, things go on as they are supposed to, we do what we are assigned, meet deadlines and get it over with. Knowing what to do after four or five years of study at IIT is one of those deciding phases where we have to do something out of routine, think about what we actually want, what we can get from where we are. Here is an account of how I went about making my decisions and preparing for it. In one of those routine placement

talks, a speaker remarked, ‘there are two ways you can choose a career- by extrapolation from what you have right now and by interpolation from your long term goal’. This helps one realize the importance of identification of long term goal. In my opinion, once a person is convinced about that, it is easy to pull off an interview; more importantly, it is easy to identify which options to prepare for.

ITC NA interview

I was interviewed on-campus for NA role at ITC
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Test HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
I referred some of seniors resume’s for preparing my own resume. Then I prepared a rough draft and mailed it to some of my seniors who did a thorough review of my resume. I received some valuable insights from them and finally I prepared my final resume. While applying in different companies I only altered my areas of interests, for instance while applying in core companies I mentioned my “areas of interest” as the core subjects.
Round 2

Test

Interview Experience
The company first gave us a questionnaire similar to our standard campus CV format. The questionnaire consisted of some general questions as answers to which we were asked to specify our extra-curricular activities, our areas of interest and so on. The questionnaire also consisted of some questions which we were expected to answer smartly. The company also laid down a minimum CGPA cut-off criterion of 7.0. On these bases the company shortlisted some 70 candidates out the 400 odd people who applied.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Experience
The third round was the interview round. The interview was a technical plus HR interview. Previous year the company had conducted 2 rounds, however this year the company conducted only one round. The first question they asked me was to speak about myself. I started making mistakes from the first line that I spoke. The interviewer pinpointed every minute mistake that I made. This interview was kind of a stress interview and if your very first interview turns out to be a stress interview you are quite certainly going to end up screwing it.
Then they asked me about my internships. I had done two internships both in a company called Tractor Industries. My work during the internships was related to tractor driveline. They asked me some technical questions on the work that I did during my internships and also on my projects. I was not able to give suitable replies to any of those questions. Other technical questions they asked me were on priming of the pumps and fluid mechanics. Next they asked me to specify my subject of interest, to which I replied ‘refrigeration’. Listening to this they asked me to design an air conditioner for the room in which interview was being conducted. I was doing everything just perfectly fine, but then again interrupted and I lost all my coherence and confidence and consequently I ended up screwing in this question as well.
Further one of the interviewers asked me to specify my second favourite subject; I defensively said ‘small hydro power’. The interviewer was an alumnus of IIT Roorkee and one of his electives was small hydro power. He was a pioneer of the subject and grilled me heavily on this topic. I was left flat footed at times. I was not able to answer some simple questions he asked me about the turbines used in small hydro power schemes. Somehow they were convinced that I am more oriented for a marketing job than a technical job, they also upheld a notion that I would quit the company sooner or later and go for MBA. I tried to convince them that further studies was not my agenda and would never be and also that I want to enter into the industry as a technician. They still seemed quite reluctant.
Motivation for applying
ITC is a very well renowned FMCG company in India and has a significant presence in the Indian market. It is known for its emphasis on technical questions asked in the interview rounds. The profile is related to their production/manufacturing line.

Interview Tips
Make a balanced resume and tweak it a little bit according to what the company is looking for. So incase of ITC have more projects than Postion of Responsibilites.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
25 Minutes
Interview Experience
The GD was a case discussion. A plane had crashed into a jungle and there were 7-8 survivors. we were given brief intro of each person and had to decide certain things
Interview Tips
in a 25 minute GD one should be careful that the time available is neither too less nor too much. You need not jump directly into the discussion and give away all the points that you have thought. that way you wont have anything to speak in the later half. nor should you wait too long. your points should be placed well apart so that you remain in the picture throughout your GD. Also try to frame your points clearly and support them with examples or analogies. That too helps. You may start or conclude the GD if you are really confident about it.
Round 3

  • Question 2: What was the biggest challenge during your intern
  • Question 3: what is your fav course (questions relating to that field)

it was like a pleasant chat. they asked me questions regarding my projects and internships.
Interview Tips
Do not be too conscious. In a technical interview you should be calm and comfortable. Treat it like a chat bcoz major focus is on the answers or your technical knowledge and not your body language or attitude. THINK ALOUD. all the steps involved in the solution should be explained elaborately

technical + Hr interview Interview
Round 1

technical + Hr interview

Interview Experience
Candidates are grilled with technical and HR questions. The technical questions are picked from your CV based on the work done during internships / projects / BTP / MTP etc. Other than that the panel might ask questions from your area of expertise like Thermodynamics, Pumps, Compressors, Design etc. After the technical grilling, some HR questions are also asked based on your extra-academics. Mostly HR questions, but some interviews can get technical too. During the technical round, it might happen that you are not be able to answer all the questions. They generally ask technical questions based on the internships/academic work done in your CV.
Interview Tips
Just try to be inquisitive and work out the problem at hand. Leaves a very good impression on the interview panel.
Round 2

Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Why ITC specifically?
Interview Experience
Only candidates who clear round I give this final interview. Interview is generally taken by the head of a division .Since the candidate has cleared round I, round II is a much simpler round.
Interview Tips
Just be confident about your answers.
Skills

Skill Tips
ITC generally looks at the balance between academics and extra-academics. If the CGPA is in the lower range of 7.5 - 8.5, there should be sufficient extra-academics and extra-curricular efforts in the CV ( Core Team / Inter-IIT / Inter-halls/ Start-ups/ Papers or any other position of responsibility ) . Internships in companies will definitely help. Especially some experience of working in a factory / leading a team in a project would be good. Especially some experience of working in a factory / leading a team in a project would be good. Other than that, any impactful intern ( FT too ) will surely add value. It always helps in the interview if the candidate has done a lot of research on the company. Normally people do not research much and stumble when questions like “ Why ITC specifically “ are asked. Do research about ITC. ITC’s CSR initiatives, products, divisions etc.
