Round 1

### Test

Interview Experience
The IBM aptitude is pure aptitude no technical at all. But there is a catch , you have a 2 minute and 15 sec timer for each question. No negative marking and no going to the previous questions. Also there are 2 sections (1) number series(20 Q) (2) Quantitative (20Q), a total of 90 minutes. Understand that all questions purely aptitude type, so RS Agarwal (Quantitative aptitude).
THE IMPORTANT THING IS IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO SOLVE A QUESTION AND THE TIMER RUNS OUT STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND MOVE ON, DO NOT THINK ABOUT QUESTIONS YOU HAVE ATTENDED,many people ended up missing a lot even ones they know like that since they ran out of time.
The types of questions are(under the quantitative section) :-

Profit and Loss Questions
Work – Time problems
Percentage Type problem
Then some problems which involved weight
Problems involving Area and volume(we increase the radius by 30% what is ratio of areas)
Compound and Simple Interest type problems
Some geometry type problems
Problems involving age
Problems involving relations(how is x related to y)
Problems involving speed rate of flow etc
Probability type problems

You will find all type of problems in book I mentioned above.
Number series Section:

The typical number series questions, just practice a lot. These kind of questions need experience to solve fast. One more thing , this is how the question will appear
Q1
*,1,2,3,4,5,6
a)7 b)0 c)4 d)5
No the answer is not B that is wrong, the thing is don’t get confused by the “*”. We are always expected to find the last number in the series so the answer A. I answered 3 questions wrong before I realized we are not supposed to find *. Yes I agree its a crappy question paper design.
Anyways after the aptitude we waited in a hall for the results. While we were waiting the first batch had already finished the second round and was wait for the third round to start.
Round 2

### essay writing

Interview Experience
In my opinion this is the most unnecessary and unfair round there is. You have 15 minutes to read a passage and write a 5 line e-mail promoting the product described. We were given a passage about an online market that IBM made(like apples itunes store). Couple of things here:

NEAT handwriting (how sad) and no striking off anything you have written. IF you do that consider yourself rejected.
Describe a lot about the product and end with a catchy line encouraging the person reading the mail to buy the product.

There were mass eliminations in this round.
Round 3

### Group Discussion

Interview Experience
We were split into groups of 10 each and we given a topic. As long as you say something loud and clear you can pass this round. It is not that hard, just say stuff lots of stuff, its not like other GD’s apparently. The folks who got eliminated were ones that don’t talk much. The GD lasted for 5 minutes.and a maximum of 3 were eliminated from each group. Some topics are effect of social networking sites on the society, should Sachin Tendulkar retire.
Round 4

### Technical Interview

Interview Experience
This is more of an “how good can you speak English type of interview”. The interview lasted for 5-15 minutes depending on panel. Most of the panels just asked basic information about you and your projects. Some of the questions asked to those who attended were:

“how long ya been waiting”
self intro
explain you project
what is the difference between array and structure
what is a pointer in c
a couple of simple sql queries
what is an assembler, parser
what is a semaphore
some coding stack, queue, there were some other programs they asked to write not sure

Overall if you speak good English and answer most of the questions asked you are in. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate difficulty of the interview as 5 out of 10. Which means you need to know only the basics of all areas and the details of your projects. And yes people with IBM DB2 certificates were asked a lot of questions from that, so its better if you don’t keep IBM certificates (DB2,tivoli) unless you are confident.

Round 2

### Test

Duration
60 Minutes
Test Sections
• Section 1: Quant and English (not sure whether English was there)
Interview Experience
Simple quant questions, 2 sections, 20 - 30 min each. Calculators were not allowed.
Round 3

### Group Discussion

Duration
30 Minutes
Interview Experience
11 members were part of the GD! They were under the impression that students from IITs are usually interested in technology, research and engineering. Your enthu/understanding of what a 'business consultant' does is what is tested in the GD. Just before the GD, they said that they would explain what they meant by "smarter planet". They
confused us by mentioning some technological innovations (like solar power, prosthetic limbs, artificial heart, brain, GPS, etc.) as examples of smarter planet. After the GD, they were able to simply separate those candidates who talked about business consulting from those candidates who got confused and talked about technology.
Round 4

### Interview

Interview Experience
1. The first 3 minutes was just a general talk about my hometown, junior college, etc. ( I think he was also from Andhra)

2. He went through my resume and asked me why I put certain points, like my BITSAT score in there. He also pointed out that there was nothing much regarding sports. I just made defending arguments.

3. He asked me about my teamwork, instances of good and bad teamwork, what I have learned from my experiences of teamwork in IIT. He said that the profile would need me to work in teams with IIM grads and asked me how I could manage.
Skills

### Skills Tested

Skill Tips
Practicing early in the semester would definitely help for any kind of placement.
General Tips
3 things:1. I had 9.67 CGPA in Management minor and this added weight to my non-core side.2. I did an internship at IMaCS in infrastructure consulting. I was able to put pseud that I worked in teams with MBA grads during that internship and that we worked well. I think I also spoke well about my teamwork in class projects.3. During the GD, I gave a good example of business consulting (something regarding Maruthi Suzuki which I recalled from Marketing Management class). It gave them a strong opinion that I'm into business consulting.
Motivation for applying
I was apping, so I didn't prepare properly. However, I must suggest those who app, (not the ones who are bent on going abroad, but the ones like me, like cats on the wall) to attend all the placement tests and put proper fight during placements. I'm not saying that you should practice quant months earlier or mug up the finance material. (Its great if you can do that too, but I expect you'd be busy with GRE, TOEFL, etc.) I suggest you to finish (or pause) your SOPs and stuff before the third week of November and attend all the companies' tests and get placed early. A good placement is not only a big relief but it also allows you to drop your safe universities and apply to more strong. I didn't attend a couple of tests and regretted it during placements(getting placed on 16th day is not exactly Christmas) Never ever mention GRE or MS or any higher studies, for that matter, in any placement interview if you want to get placed in that company, no matter how friendly or understanding the interviewer might seem to be. (I got rejected in the first round itself in a couple of companies for doing this.)
