Round 1

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Topic
Managing a supply chain with various constraints from production to quality managers in the time of lack of workers
Interview Experience
It was a tricky problem. I gave five minutes to thinking that what I would have done if I would have had been there and kind of broke down the problem using the consultancy approach I had studied. I focussed over the maximum profitability of company on production and quality and tried to compromise a little bit on Human resources.
As I opened and concluded the discussion myself with major inputs, it went pretty well for me
Interview Tips
- Be practical in approach
- Dont just give points for the sake of talking - it goes in negative side
- HUL focusses a lot on GD - more than interviews - as the problems are real life cases - so be really prepared (if you didn't have any supply chain experience - sit with someone who had it earlier and discuss problems as mentioned)
Round 2

  • Question 2: What have you done so far in the field to make your hobbies convert in your work?
  • Question 3: If you don't love something, say finance, how do you still manage to work on it?

Funny Moments
Interviewer 1 : So, on which brand were you exactly working at p&g?
Me: Sir I guess I am not allowed to say that provided I have signed a confidentiality agreement with p&g
Interviewer 1 : They are not hiring anyone this time, it doesn't matter now, right?
Me : Sir, lets take a condition replacing p&g with HUL and vice versa in this condition - would you have liked me leaking your data? It wouldn't have mattered me even then :D
Interviewer 1 : -_-
Interviewer 2 : Haha :D :D

Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Group Discussion Group Activity Technical Interview HR Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
The role required the knowledge of international standards and I had the knowledge but not much of experience. So I highlighted the work done in that area in every single project I have done.
Interview Tips
Do prepare your CV according to the job profile.
Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
20 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
Priorities the economic and social needs of India
Interview Experience
We had to first give our own priorities and then convince others to the same. I was the one who gave almost all the priorities opposite of others. But I had my own reasons and I rated every need of the hour according to the different criterias and at last I had answers to everyone who was against my answer.
Interview Tips
Just speak what you really think about the topic. That way even if you are wrong, you would be confident enough to accept it. Listen more speak point to point.
Round 3

Group Activity

Interview Experience
There were two teams after the GD and we were given few props. From those props we had to prepare some goods and market it. The challenge were to produce within limited time and limited resources and then market why ours was better. We made very small diverse products and in good quantity. We also named our business which gave us extra advantage.
Interview Tips
These activities identify who has the leadership qualities and how you perform within a team. You have to be open minded and welcome all the ideas given by other team mates and show that you posses leadership qualities.
Round 4

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Situation on IAS 12 was given.
  • Question 2: Few accounting problems were given.
  • Question 3: Few tax related and finance modeling related questions were asked.
  • Question 4: Few questions on my training experiences.
Interview Experience
The interview was of around 55 minutes. I managed to give 60% - 70% answers.

When you dont know the answer properly, just say that as per my very limited knowledge on the topic and then answer, what you really think is. If you dont have any idea about the topic, dont try to give any answer.
Round 5

Try not to lie in the resume.
Make sure the formatting is crisp.
Do not forget to highlight important points
Round 2

Group Discussion

Duration
25 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic

Interview Experience
I felt the GD was slightly chaotic, with a lot of cross talk. Thus we couldn't deliberate on some important points as the course of discussion was being continuously shifted and some subtle details were overlooked. Our group came to a conclusion a tad bit too early after which our moderator questioned us possible situations and scenarios that we hadn't taken into consideration. Two people made it through the GD, me and a friend of mine.
Interview Tips
Make sure the moderator notices you. For that be loud and clear while you talk.
Address the group as a whole. Maintain eye contact with everyone.
A common myth as far as GDs are concerned is that the person who talks the most goes through. You might talk for 20 minutes straight and still might not make it through if you do not put across relevant points.
Think before you speak. Only speak if you have something that would really add value to the discussion. Avoid repeating or reframing points that have been already made by other members.
Listen to other people. Always remember that the group as a whole is being judged.
Keep a track of noteworthy points made by other members by writing them down on a notepad. This will help you conclude better and ensures that you don't miss out on anything important.
The most important aspect, make sure that the group comes to a conclusion. The whole exercise of the GD is to come to a decision and not just analysis.
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
It started out with the interviewer asking a few HR questions about life at IIT and how IIT had helped mould myself. Following questions were based on my summer internship project and theory/practical application of heat exchangers. The interviewer was very encouraging throughout and didn't try to grill me. I fumbled a bit in certain questions but managed to answer them after a few hints by the interviewer.
Interview Tips
A major part of your technical interview would be on the theory behind the projects that you have undertaken. So make sure that you are thorough with the theory behind them.
A basic knowledge of all courses that you have completed is expected and most of the questions are application based. So brushing up all your course would definitely help.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
My HR in my opinion was pretty peaceful. It comprised of generic HR questions.
Interview Tips
Try framing a story around every question. For that expect what questions they might ask you and be ready with answers for them beforehand.
Do some background research on the companies. Employers are generally pleased if you quote facts related to company you are interviewing for and it also shows that you have done you homework and that you are genuinely interested in the position they have to offer.

A company has a market share of 10% in the Utteranchal and Utter Pradesh market. They have doubled their profits in the last one year. They currently have a single production line and want to start a new one. Two technologies are available to them, current technology and a new one. The current technology costs them 50 lakhs. They have to hire 50 more people and they double their pruduction. The new technology costs four times the current one and triples their productivity. They have to find alternate employment for 25 of their current employs and their gross margin reduces from 25% to 24%. Which technology should they select? What factors do you need to take into consideration to arrive at a decision.
Interview Experience
We had % minutes to go through the topic and prepare. Then had 20 minutes to discuss and 5 minutes to conclude. We compared pros and cons of both the technology and came to a conclusion. We looked at the human factor of the problem where the livelihood of the people are affected vs the profits that company could make. We made the mistake of considering the company to be pretty young even though nothing like that was mentioned.

Consider and stick to assumptions that can be made from the information given in a logical manner.
Round 3

Interview Experience
Asked me to run him through my resume. Once I mentioned about my internship, he asked me a question regarding the problems faced by pipelines since I had worked at a company that develops pipeline monitoring systems. Then we went on to discuss a refrigerant flowing through the pipelines in a factory. I have to make the flow more laminar to improve the heat removal rate. I told that reynolds number can be used to determine type of flow. Explained how each term in the reynolds number could be changed and finally came to the conclusion that the refrigerant liquid would need to be changed.
Interview Tips
They look at only your professional experiences or projects that you have done. So mention these first and be confident about every detail regarding them. Each person would be asked questions based on this and the subjects they have mentioned in their resume.
Round 4

Other Interview

Interview Experience
Asked about internship and explained about the mechanism I had designed. He gave me a problem statement and told me to make a design for it immediately without using any electronics or engines. Once I suggested a mechanism, He started reducing the items that I could use. Once I finally came to the design he had in mind with a little guidance from him. He handed me over to another interviewer who had been listening in on the phone. He asked me to tell me about through of my strengths and a weakness of mine as my favourite professor would tell me. And as a final question the main interviewer asked me whether I would choose ITC, HUL or P&G.

I had made a master resume first where I had listed down all the activities I had done.
Then based on which type of companies I was sitting for, I decided what parts should go into the one page resume
Once that was done I got it reviewed by seniors
HUL also has a form wherein certain questions regarding your life experiences will be asked. Make sure you can come up with good examples and try to be honest about it
Interview Tips
Get your resume reviewed by as many seniors as possible
Round 2

Group Discussion Topic
Choosing between two technologies for a plant undergoing production expansion
Interview Experience
- Apart from HUL, I had also applied for ITC. ITC also had a GD.I hadn't done too well in the gd and wasn't even shortlisted for the interview
- Instead of being tense, I looked at why I had failed and tried to improve upon them in the HUL GD
Interview Tips
-People who talk well and connect socially aren't necessarily going to do well in GD's.
-Its actually better to have a group with more number of people as the GD in whole would come to a nice conclusion
- Don't get panicked by looking at people who are in your GD
Round 3

Interview Experience
The interview mostly focused on my experiences in my previous intern.Make sure you have prepared well for some standard questions.
A puzzle was also asked which I was able to answer easily.

Round 1

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: PID control system specifics to control flow rate and temperature of milk in the factory?
  • Question 2: Difference in SI and CI Engine
  • Question 3: Bearing material and the reason for such an use
Interview Experience
The interview consisted of technical questions pertaining to subjects mentioned in the resume which added that extra element of comfort.
This was followed by an industrial problem which was open to numerous solutions and the only thing that probably mattered was the direction and quality of the design implementation. All in all it was an exciting experience with questions being fired from both sides.
Interview Tips
This is a tip not just for technical but also for the HR round. Your resume consists of the highlights of your student life so ensure that you drive your interview towards your resume points so that you can quickly pick that up as an example. This will ensure that you leave a mark, having communicated your strength verbally, because you can do much more to elaborate on the significance of your achievements in the interview than you can in a one line description on your resume.

Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
This interview consisted of questions like, tell me about yourself, why HUL, why should HUL choose you, etc. which I believe are important questions and it's answers should be considered important by a company as it gives insight into a candidate's mind, character and plans for the future

I would advice people not to prepare TOO MUCH in things which are not going to be helpful for them anywhere apart from the selection process. I would rather suggest them to concentrate on their everyday work (projects, academics, etc.) which is one of the major criteria of their selection, and just go along with the process.

Also another extremely important thing is believing in yourself and the things you have done as it will significantly add to your confidence during the interview. Also be truthful. Do not make up things or increase impact of your success than what it actually was
Motivation for applying
I want to become an industrialist, and HUL is one of the biggest which can offer me a lifetime experience. Also, their internship is extremely structured and their leadership program is amazing

I was interviewed on-campus for Management trainee role at HUL
Interview Process
Group Discussion Interview
Round 1

Group Discussion

Interview Experience
I was a bit nervous in ITC GD which resulted in my loud voice and dominating nature. The case was one of the typical cases of ITC which I missed during preparation; as a matter of fact they haven’t changed it since 3 or 4 years. It did not go that good but I was sure if 4 people would be selected from my group then I would be in. But by that time I was ready for HUL’s GD. It was a fresh new case which I forgot by the way (:P). The group was big (12 students) and I gave some good ideas (I think so). The key is “never give up on quality, safety and ethics”.
Well HUL is famous for taking only one or two guys, on top of that, rumor was that it would take only chemical guys, so I didn't had much hope with HUL, on the other hand, I was 100% sure to get through ITC (my profile and everything just matched with ITC and my friends also boosted me for the same). But I don’t know what was in my fate, at around 10:00 PM, the results of ITC’s GD came, and I was not shortlisted, all my hopes were shattered and everything turned into fume. They took only two students from my group and I was completely hopeless as I wasn't preparing for BCG, screwed up Diamond and ITC was gone. Only chance was in HUL (about which I was not sure) and Opera. I still remember that time, my wing mates helped me through that situation and boosted me a hell lot and soon I saw a ray of hope. 20 minutes later, HUL’s result came out and I was shortlisted for the interview. I decided to prepare as much as I could for HUL and revised all my stuffs all the night. I had 4 interviews next day but I didn't sleep even after going through 2 GD’s and 1 aptitude test. Finally the day came. I couldn't sleep last night.
Round 2

Interview

Interview Experience
My first one was scheduled with Opera. I was taking it very lightly. The guy was from USA. I did my intern in Canada, so we did a little bit chit chat about that and we had a very nice conversation. He seemed happy with my attitude. He gave me a business case on Casino and after his some help, I finally solved the case and came up with the answer he was seeking. The next interview was with BCG. The bad thing about BCG interviews is that they don’t let you go anywhere else till their process is finished. So instead of going there, I first gave Diamond’s interview and then HUL.Since you would have read a lot about Diamond and BCG interview, so let me come straight to HUL. The first interview was taken by a factory manager. First question was based on pump, he asked about types of pump, NPSH and other relevant things. Then couple of more questions related to thermodynamics. He asked about refrigeration cycle, LMTD, cooling tower, brayton cycle and some more questions. It lasted about 15-20 minutes. I did pretty well and asked about his experience at HUL. It went good and I was sure to get shortlisted for the next round.
After that I was called for second round which was a telephonic interview taken by General Manager of the company Yogesh and there was one more guy whose name I don’t remember. He again asked the questions on pumps, use of pump in our daily life, NPSH, its determination, laws of thermodynamics, perpetual machin, use of second law in our daily life, principle of airplanes, Bernoulli theorem, what happens when you open the door of refrigerator, a heat transfer calculation (I don’t remember exactly) and some more questions in thermodynamics. Finally he asked some questions from my form. He was not satisfied with the answer I gave in one of the questions and he asked me to cite another example. He asked about my strategy on successful conduction of one of my events (Gearloose) and what made it best. Finally there were some formal questions like if I was ready to be posted anywhere and all.
Skills

Skills Tested

    General Tips
I think I answered all the questions very confidently and to the point and elaborated where required. I was very much confident about pumps and cited as many examples as I could. I think this was the best part of my interview. Initially I was a bit nervous but then I contemplated and decided to take proper time to answer each question. I think I satisfied him with every question he asked and that’s why I got selected in the company of which I used to dream since my 3rd year.

Last but not the least, I would like to say that you should know yourself and your shortcomings thoroughly and then do your best to overcome them. This is the single most time when you should devote yourself completely in the preparation (just like JEE time) if you want to get selected in your dream company. As in my case, though I did have good academic background and positions of responsibilities but I used to stammer and was not fluent in English. So I had to work a lot in these two areas in order to do decent in the interviews. I practiced in front of mirror and gave as many mock interviews as I could and that finally gave me result. Remember, nothing is impossible if you want to achieve that. You have to just work very very hard for that.
