Round 3

Group Discussion

Duration
30 Minutes
Group Discussion Topic
BANNING OF TOBACCO
Interview Experience
after written test is cleared they divided the people into groups and send them to gd. after giving the topic hr went out of the room so as to give time for us to think about the topic.he gave five min then one guy started and told that tobacco should be totally banned as it causes severe damage to the health, two more joined him. other guy started telling that it shouldn't be banned as it effects the economy of our state so instead of banning it we have to make aware of people about the effects it makes.after few minutes i started telling that instead of banning tobacco and instead of not banning tobacco and making awareness in them better choose after alternatives like gutka etc such that only the person who takes it gets spoiled not all others around him unlike cigarette which effects the people around the person who takes it.and now make aware in those people who take gutkas etc.... in this way my argument started and gd went for about 25min.... and finally out of 8 he selected 4....
Round 4

Interview

Interview Experience
in his section firstly i was a bit nervous.... once i entered into the room the panel board sir introduced himself and asked me about myself and normal qus lik how is ur day etc and made me tension free... and then he started asking me qus... he started from c language... i told that im not from computers back round so im not that good at programming languages so he asked basic languages in c lik what is the differences between for loop and while loop, what is structure, pointers and asked me to write a program to print the prime numbers(which i couldn't do it properly)...after that he asked me about my project and asked what do u think is the difference between an IT company and a mechanical manufacturing company...he asked qus in my project and also in my industrial training.. i answered them very well by which he was very impressed though i didnt ans programming qus well...finally he asked you are not good at programming languages but u are good in ur subjects if i hire u how can u cope up... then i told that if u hire me now i still got 1yr time to join in ur organisation, so 1 yr time is more than enough for me to learn c, c++, java... then he directly told that u have cleared this section and now u can attend HR round...
Round 5

Interview

Interview Experience
this section was very cool... once u are through technical round then its almost very simple to get through this round.. in this only general qus were asked like tell about yourself, about your family, why should i hire u, why did u opt hp,wat do u know about hp are u ok wit the pay....etc... al that needed in this section is only perfect and spontaneous and impressive ans...without any panic or confusion.... this round went for 10 mins
General Tips
i had great experience wit hp.... firstly i thank all the people who selected me.....power point was at 10 in the morning and results were announced at night 11.. so the total 13hrs went very tensed...but then i had a great time with HP...al the process went very perfectly....panel board members are very free they made the interview environment very free by which i could able to put my talent before them....but at last im in HP..

firstly for aptitude wat i say is r.s.agarwal is much than enough for getting through try to solve as many problems as u can and do perfectly.... coming to hr for computers people its better they go a bit deeper into their subjects... but for others is better to have an overview and basics of programming languages and perfect in their subjects...wat ever u ans ans perfectly, confidently....of all this u must have gods grace

  • Question 1: Coding questions on data structures and oops
Interview Experience
The questions were basic, some where well known like reversing a link list using recursion, designing of car parking lot using concept of oops, find tree height/diameter, etc.
Interview Tips
1. They ask you to write complete code on paper. This sometimes turn out to be a challenging task when you don't have compiler to correct you on basic things. Practice writing codes on paper.
2. They surely ask questions on oops, like polymorphism, inheritance, etc. besides their definition, also practice writing sudo codes to explain them

75 questions
Test Sections
  • Section 1: Quantitative
  • Section 2: Data structures
Interview Experience
Out of 50 people who appeared for the test,  only 5 people were shortlisted- 2 from cse and 3 from ece.
SEC 1: 20 questions on quantitative ability. It consisted of questions on cubes, logical reasoning, sets, venn diagrams, 'statement 1 is correct or statement 2 or both'  type of questionsSEC 2: There were questions on data structures and file commands like rewind, fseek etc..SEC 3: There were 15 questions on operating system concepts, unix commands and networkingSEC 4: There were questions on overloading, object oriented programming, pure virtual function, inheritance, pointers.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
They asked me lots of questions on c, pointers, questions like what is volatile, register, extern, macro, inline function, typedef, enum and static const char* const*char difference.Proper knowledge of c is very essential. Then they asked data structures questions. Those were very easy. Then they asked me bytecode in java how and where it is used, java virtual machine functionality, why it is platform independent, padding in structures....then they asked about real time operating systems...unix and real time what is the difference, what is the scheduling algorithm used in unix and windows, in which operating system priority scheduling is used...what is memory leak, when do we get segmentation fault...what is semaphore, ptherad mutex, what is leakymemory, fork system call how is address space copied, what is 3 way handshake protocol, ipsec, digital signature, rsa, public key cryptography, If you have100 mb RAM, how will u write a program so that the system crashes? Just allocate with malloc size greater than 100.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Experience
General questions were asked. Like, where r u from? Why do u want to join HP?What achievements have u done to prove that you are good at coding...i don't know why companies ask this question...I guess they are looking for someachievements...Then he asked me where my dad works and general HR questions.
Interview Tips
Communication skills is essential.
General Tips
If you are interested only in package only then don't sit for HP. You might get a higher package in a new company but the problem is that it might not send you an offer letter or make you sit on the bench just giving you salary, which automatically increases the chances of sacking u.

I got my first normal job around august when the placements initially started but then after a long time of wait. I sat for about 12 to 13 interviews and got rejected in all of them.So please do not lose hope. Wait for right opportunities  and grab yourchance and do not get frustrated.
Motivation for applying
HP has a brand name. The work profile for me is R&D in Image Processing. Though the pay package is less, if you perform well, you will definitely get a hike.

Test Sections
  • Section 1: OOPS
  • Section 2: C++
  • Section 3: Quantitative
  • Section 4: Logical
Interview Experience
1 mark for Correct answer and .25 negative for wrong answer!
The complexity of questions in OOPS were above average.

In C++ type of questions were: Debugging, Output, Data Structures, and Questions on function pointers. I am very weak in C++ syntax since it was not part of my curriculum. But I am comfortable in C and Algorithms. So I could solve 10 questions and I predicted 5 questions. I left 5 questions.
Interview Tips
No need to prepare for Aptitude. There were no formula eccentric problems. Everything could be solved easily.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
They started by viewing my resume. They didn’t ask me to introduce myself. They were aware of my name. Then I gave my file to them. They gave me a confused look and said it is not needed for us.

They started off asking “How good are you in C++?”

As I already told I am very weak in C++. So I told them” We didn’t have C++ in our curriculum, so I am not very much sure of it” and I showed them my Mark Sheet and course details to prove it.

Then I told that I have strong will to learn C++ and I would learn it soon.

They asked some programs in C. Function pointer related programs and some basic concepts in C.
Then the questions were asked on Java and OOPS. I was asked to design classes and objects for some dynamic problems.
Interview lasted for 1 hour 45 minutes. That was the longest Interview I ever had.

Questions were asked on: C, C++, OOPS
Since I did Intern and worked on .Net some questions on C# was asked.
Big Data, Linux System calls(grep, ps, awk, etc.), Shell Script
Networking- How to communicate with Windows, Mac, Linux, and other devices kind of questions. (WMI, SSH, SNMP) Operating Systems, Data Structures (Linked Lists, Trees, Sorting Algorithms). They asked me to write clear code with test cases. Software life cycle- Agile, WaterFall, Cloud Computing, PHP, JSP,JavaScript, Database Questions. (I did certification on DB2. So they asked me to write syntax for queries in DB2 too)

They completed the round 2 with a puzzle. If are familiar with all subjects, then only you could crack the round 2.
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
Basic questions only asked on all technologies. They asked me to write code when it is required.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
Typical HR round. We had good conversation. I impressed them a lot on each and every question. Finally they asked about my current offer and they noted my current package.

There were five sections in the written section. The first section consisted of c algorithms, second section was of quant type (pretty easy), the third section had a mix of c and data structures questions, the fourth section comprised of questions from os and networking and in the fifth section students were given a choice between c,c++,java. I opted for c, the questions in this section were of very high standard. Then there was an English section in which we had to write a letter.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
They shortlisted around 23 students for the technical interview. Depending on your performance they kept shortlisting students in the interview itself.
My first interview was pretty easy. It comprised of questions from c, oops
and codes were asked from ds. The interview lasted for around 45 minutes but was a pretty easy one .
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
Once I was shortlisted for the second interview, i had a difficult time facing the second interview. The interviewer kept asking questions from networking to which i had no clue as we are taught networking only in 4-1. Then a few questions were asked from os (semaphore, deadlock, fifo, critical section, thread), then a few questions from cao as i had stated that it was my favourite subject. The interview duration was around 30 minutes.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
In the HR interview i was asked 3-4 puzzles (pretty easy..practice some from
any puzzles book). Then they asked me questions regarding my strengths, weaknesses, passion, why hp should hire you?, and so on..pretty cliche stuff. The interview lasted for around one hour.
Interview Tips
Once u get through the technical rounds you get pretty sure that you have landed the job, but we should never commit the mistake of taking hr interview lightly.
The only thing that matters in HR interview is to be confident in your answers and never to back out on any previous answers that you have given.

Interview Experience
The Technical Part of the written test was divided into 4 sections - Programming Ability, Data Structures and Algorithms, Operating Systems and Networking Concepts, and another section on a Programming Language (choice of C, C++, Java). The Quantitative and Reasoning questions were mostly simple questions like interpretation of bar graphs etc. The tougher part was the technical section.
Round 2

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
I had two rounds of technical interviews. Both the rounds lasted around 10 minutes each. The questions were mainly related to my research projects and my research paper(in Data Mining) in particular. I was asked in-depth questions regarding the implementation part of my research paper. Other than that, I was asked basic questions in Data Structures and Operating Systems. On the whole, I felt my research work played a crucial role in my technical interviews.
Round 3

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
The interviewers in the technical rounds were very polite and they tried to bring forth the best in me.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Experience
My HR interview was the longest and toughest interview. It was a bit more strenuous as interviewers tried to see how I would react under pressure. It lasted for around 40 minutes. I was asked various questions about my career goals- "Why HP?","What would I do if IBM offered me a similar job?", etc. I was also asked to talk about the core values and principles that were important to me as a person and how a job at Hewlett- Packard would enable me to realize them. I answered the questions candidly and confidently, and justified everything I said with rational arguments.
Interview Tips
In the HR interview, be straightforward and answer confidently.Study the basics of Data Structures and Operating Systems thoroughly. But,be prepared with other important subjects like Systems Programming, Compilers, Database Management Systems, and Networking also. In the technical interviews, try to focus on your strengths(like research projects, internships and any other academicachievements).
