I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Madras for Consultant role at EXL Service
    Interview Process

    Round 1

    Test

    Test Sections
      Interview Experience
3 sections - Quant, Verbal and Logical Reasoning. No sectional time limit and sections could be attempted in any order. However, they might have section-wise cut-offs (not sure) and so each section must be given importance. It is a speed based test. Level of difficulty is easy to moderate
      Interview Tips
you need to be quick. Do not waste too much time on any question. All questions contain equal marks. You can come back to the remaining questions later.Try maximizing your score in the apti. A lot of preference is given to the high scorers of the apti.
      Round 2

      Other Interview

      Interview Experience
It started with a brief introduction-Tell us about yourself. Till the time you answer, one panellist goes through your resume.Be thorough with everything you write in your resume. Do not write fake stuff, they question you on anything that you have written. They asked me about everything- projects, seminar topic, languages mentioned, extra-curricular activities A lot of SQL questions were asked. They ask concepts, queries, syntax. The had questioned me a lot on JOINS.
      Interview Tips
Support everything you say with an example. (eg. if u say you have leadership qualities, give an example of when you have been a leader). If you don’t know an answer, tell it to them honestly. Don’t try to fool them.
      Round 3

      Technical Interview

      Interview Experience
Standard puzzles that you normally prepare for interviews were asked. Do not give away the answer immediately as if u know it by heart. Think aloud and explain them every step. It does not matter even if the final answer is wrong, the approach is important. In my case, I wasn’t prepared with the puzzle I was asked so I explained it to them from myperspective. Even though the final answer was wrong, the approach was correct so they qualified me for the next round. Also, they smartly try to confuse you. So remain confident in what you say. Do not argue if you are very confident, explain it to them politely. In the tech part of the interview, basic java/c/c++ questions wereasked. (what is object oriented programming? What is inheritance?
      Round 4

      HR Interview

      Interview Experience
Be prepared with all sorts of HR questions- strengths, weaknesses, happiest moment, proudest moment etc). Why EXL? One Fermi question was asked in this round. Again here, the approach is important, not the final answer. Beprepared with a question to ask at the end of the interview- it could be abt the company/ data analytics or anything. That shows your interest in the job

Even the most difficult problems can be solved if you keep your cool. d) Read about the company in advance. Especially its culture and values. Identify what the company is looking for. Incorporate it intelligently in the answers that you give.

          Skills Tested

            General Tips
            Mistakes committed.

            a) Low level of preparation for some points in resume. Didn't expect interviewer (P&G) to spend 25 min. on the school captain point which was not well prepared.

            b) Silly mistake while solving Capital One Case study.(Later avoided it by thinking aloud)

Keep your level of enthusiasm in the interview high. Companies like students with high levels of energy. Excitement alone about the company can land you a job!!!

            b) Keep two copies of resume, a pen and sheets of blank paper with you for all the interviews.

            c) Dress for the company. Do not overdress. Suits look fine for an IB job but not for a simple technical job. d) Always greet the interviewer in a warm way.

            3. They generally mention that they are looking for in the candidates in the ppt so this helps in preparing the answers in interview. Moreover do spend some time in preparing for HR.

            Interview Experience
Guesstimates and puzzles were asked in other panels. The guy in my panel asked about analytics project I did and the algorithm used. Afterwards he asked which topics I am proficient in. I did an Applied Time Series Analysis course and have experience in R. So he asked questions on ARIMA modelling and some functions in R. (dplyr package). Before going to the interview I only prepared for puzzles and guesstimates but not case studies. But he asked me a case study about the detection of fraud credit card transactions in a bank. I remained calm and cool without going into depression and suggested him some measures. Since the interviewer was also not looking for complex answers he got convinced with my answer. Then he asked me whether I have any questions.
            Interview Tips
Be thorough with your resume. Prepare puzzles and guesstimates. Case studies are simple. Just reading Case in point is more than sufficient. Practice guesstimates with your friends in free time everyday. Do the puzzles in 'Heard on the street'

              Skills

              Skills Tested

                General Tips
                Do’s :

                • PREPARE FOR APTITUDE TESTS. Many of us believe that our profile will lead us getting

shortlisted on resume basis. That may be true, but I have not seen a process as random as

placements. It might happen that you are getting closely rejected in 3-4 firms for which you have

prepared. In such a case, having a good aptitude will give you more no. of shortlists, which will give

you a psychological security to fall back. APTITUDE PREPARATION IS BORING, so you may start it

and then leave it. Don’t do it. It is the only thing that is going to be with you in case something

                unexpected happens.

                • Be prepared for random and unexpected events like unexpected shortlisting results, irregularities in interview procedures etc.

                • Prepare in a group, and help each other. The entire placement preparation phase is very taxing,

and support from people around you helps.

                Dont’s :

                • Don’t leave things for the end.

                • Don’t underestimate yourself. Don’t overestimate yourself too.

                • Don’t have pre-conceived notions about anything: no. of people a company is going to hire, who is

better than you, who is worse than you etc. Let the company decide what they want.

                Final Tips :

                • Prioritize the sectors and analyse your chances.

                • Don’t keep too high or too low expectations from yourself.

                • PREPARE APTITUDE. If you don’t get placed in big firms, aptitude is your only fall back.

                • Be prepared for unexpected outcomes.

                • Trust yourself for what you know, because there are a lot of things and you cant know everything.

The interview is driven by what you write on your resume. Know what you write.

                • In all preparation aspects, one never gets a feeling of satisfaction. Due to paucity of time and so

much pressure around, we are unable to do things as per our expectations. So don’t worry too

much. Give ample time to things, but don’t overdo them.

                • Go to the interview empty-headed. Thinking too much about things makes you feel nervous. An empty mind works most efficiently.

She seemed fairly impressed due to my enthusiasm about the competition and my passion about my PORs. I was able to solve the puzzles. I think I was able to structure the guesstimate well although my final answer was way inaccurate :D .I paused for sometime during my puzzles, but she encouraged me a lot. I don’t think anything else went wrong

                Interview Experience
The interviewer was an IIT Kanpur alumnus. I was told afterwards that he was the senior most guy present in the interview panel. One of my friends didn't have a good experience with him in round 1, so I was pretty attentive and a little scared too.

He was fairly pleased with my case-solving in guesstimate. I didn't get a chance to play with numbers. I juststructured the whole thing and he told me to stop me there and then. As far as the second case is concerned I told him about all the competitors and what their revenue model is. I discussed at length about their pricing model. I then compared the USP of NERD magazine and was able to come up with a pricing strategy. I also added that rather than just the magazine I would like to organize some competitions which would be better source of revenue. Again, he told me to stop there and then.Again, my HR questions went pretty well. This person seemed a little hard to impress. But he always said ‘Good’ or ‘Very Good’ after the questions. That gave me a lot of encouragement (I kept on remembering the bad experience of my friend with this interviewer and that gave me the boost that I was doing pretty well). He asked me some questions like ‘What you are saying is contradicting your previous statement’ but Iremained cool and composed and clarified everything. After the cases, he waved me off. His smile told me that I had nailed the interview. I don't think anything went wrong at all. The interview went great. I didn't have to go for 3rd round

Know your resume head to toe. If you are passionate about your PORs, you shouldn't have any problemwith cracking cases based on your resume. Never underestimate the power of HR questions. It was my enthusiasm, hand gestures and passion that she really appreciated. Solving the puzzles and guesstimate was icing on the cake. Pray well before God that you get an interviewer with some common sense :P

The preparation stage was exhausting as one had to go through company profile, brush up Apti skills the night before etc. etc. depending on individual way of preparation. The first and foremost challenge is to go through Apti rounds coz that is where maximum elimination happens and generally, lot of people in NITK are pretty good at solving Apti questions accurately and quickly. Once, done with Apti, it all depends on how you express yourself at the interview and prove your knowledge and depth at things that you say you are good at.<br /> <br /> In Analytical prepare Probability, Puzzles based questions
