I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Madras for Consultant 1 role at EXL Service
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Test Technical + HR Interview Technical Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
Resume shortlist is mostly based on CG. A decent CGPA of more 7 and some good interns should be enough to make it to the test shortlist.
Interview Tips
I am not even sure if they look into any of the interns. Most of the times, it is just CG based shortlist. I think in my time, around 150 people were shortlisted for the test.
Round 2

Test

Test Sections
  • Section 1: Aptitude
Interview Experience
The test was very simple. There was only one quant section. All the questions were really easy.
Interview Tips
Preparation for this test can be done by referring to CAT material or even the aptitude your placement team sends you would be more than enough.
Round 3

Technical + HR Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Walk me through your resume
  • Question 2: Explain in detail about your internship
  • Question 3: Explain in detail about your projects (I had 2 of them)
  • Question 4: A simple case: Based on my hobby
Interview Experience
The interview was pretty chill. First mostly all the questions were asked from my resume. I was asked to explain the work I did in my internship and then, later on, asked to explain the projects that I had done. I did not have many PoRs on my resume. So nothing much was asked from that section. When I mentioned about my hobbies, I mentioned that I like watching football. It turned out that the interviewer was a football fan herself. She also asked which club I support. Luckily, her favourite was same as mine (I would prefer not to mention which club it was :P) . But because of this, she asked me a case (not a complete case as such). I was asked to list what all factors and issues that I should be considering if I were to organize a football league in Chennai. I explained to her how organizing such a league with less popular teams would be a difficult task. I also kind of came up with a number which would probably be the number of people who would be attending this league. I also spoke about the costs that would be incurred. She had asked me to assume everything on my own. (At this point in time, I was actually getting worried as I was not able to breakdown this case like one would do a with a typical case). However, at this point, she asked me to stop and that was it was for the first round of interview.
Interview Tips
For the resume part of it, make sure you are pretty thorough with every point in your resume. They may ask about any project they feel interested in.
You can always expect a question from the hobbies you mention. So make sure that you always know a lot about the same. Otherwise, you can avoid mentioning that hobby just to be on the safe side.
Though my case didn't go that well as I would have wanted it to go, I still got shortlisted for the next round.
Just don't panic when something doesn't go as planned. It can be better than you thought. Just speak out your thoughts clearly and confidently.
Round 4

Technical Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Puzzle: There are three ants, each at a corner of an equilateral triangle. Each of them can move along any of the two sides independent of the other two ants. What is the probability that none of the ants collide with each other?
  • Question 2: Puzzle: There are three jars, one of them is filled with oranges, another with apples and the third one with both apples and oranges. But all the three jars have been labeled wrong. Now you have an option to pick one fruit from any of the jars and you need to find out the actual contents of the jars as opposed to the wrongly labeled ones.
  • Question 3: Kind of a case: The interviewer is an investor. I was asked to set up a restaurant in say Chennai. What is the background work that the I should do so that when I pitch my idea to the investor, he should be convinced enough to put his money in? The interviewer asked my to assumptions on everything there is.
  • Question 4: HR: Why EXL?
Interview Experience
As it can be seen, the puzzles were not really difficult. They were very simple ones.
The case question: I told him that I will conduct a survey to find our which cuisine I will be opting for in my restaurant. But before doing that, I will have fixed the location of the restaurant. I can just do the survey only in that area. We would be inclined to set it up in a busy commercial area but the fixed cost associated with the same can be pretty high. I would also want to look at the competitors in my area who serve the same cuisine. Finally, the cuisine can be selected using both fondness and the uniqueness of the cuisine in that area.
HR question: This is one question which is generally asked in most of the interviews.
After that, he asked if I had any questions. This is the part where you really show your interest in the company. Make sure that you have a question or two ready to ask the interviewer about the company and the work/work-culture. I asked two questions and the interviewer responded with keen interest.
Interview Tips
You might have come across the puzzles. It may happen that you are given a puzzle that already know the answer to. In those cases make sure you pretend that you are hearing them for the first time. Think out loud while solving a puzzle which is one of the most important things. It's okay if you are not able to come up with the final answer. The approach matters to them a lot.
The case again was not really that specific. Just think intuitively. Make sure that you are confident of what you are speaking of.
HR question is a typical final question at the end of each interview. Make sure you have an answer ready for this before hand. This is where you really convince the interviewer that you have the skill set and the calibre for the job.

EXL Service Business analyst interview

Application
I was interviewed on-campus at NIT Surat for Business analyst role at EXL Service
Interview Process
Test Interview Interview Interview
Round 1

Test

Duration
45 Minutes
No. of Questions
40 questions
Test Sections
  • Section 1: Aptitude Test (Mathematical ability, Reasoning and Verbal ability)
Interview Experience
Questions are not difficult, Time management is very important. It was very well designed test our overall abilities and communication skills. Test was online conducted by cocubes. Out of 220+ students who attempted test, only 27 were selected to next round. I expected them to select some 70-80 after 1st round.
Interview Tips
Questions carry 1/3rd negative marks. Don't try to answer questions in order, find out easy questions and solve them first, as I said earlier, Time management is very important. I attempted arithmetic reasoning first, English (Verbal ability) next and then mathematical ability.
Round 2

Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Doors were numbered from 1-100 and first time I close all doors next I open doors with numbers that are multiples of 2 next I close doors numbered with multiples of 3 and so on upto 100th time. After the 100th time which doors are open
  • Question 2: If I have 333 digits to number pages of a book, How many pages can I number ?
Interview Experience
I focused more on my approach to solve the puzzle and that paid off. I didn't prepare for puzzles either so I tried to solve it in my own way and that might have impressed the interviewer. Some other questions like how many benches are there in this campus ? and If I wanted to start a Food center in the campus, How many customers can I expect etc questions were asked. These questions don't have any perfect answer but they see the way in which you attempt and explain it convincingly.
Interview Tips
Be confident. If they ask anything, answer properly so If they ask questions like How many customers can I expect a day after starting a food court in your college, don't just give any random number, try to do some math and give a number so that you can explain why you gave that number .
Round 3

Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Many questions were asked like why are you joining this company ?
  • Question 2: what makes you stand out from the other candidates?
  • Question 3: What is your friends opinion on you ?
  • Question 4: If I have to sell a new phone to a customer that is very costly, how will you approach the customer?
  • Question 5: If your Manager gives you a task that can't be done what will you do ? Will you say directly that it can't be done or Will you waste time even though you know that it can't be done.
  • Question 6: What are your future plans and how our organization helps you in achieving those?
  • Question 7: Are you flexible to work in every type of work environment ?
  • Question 8: What do you do in your leisure times ?
Interview Experience
This Interview is one of the best Interview Experiences I had. I was Interviewed by one of the senior vice presidents of the company. I enjoyed answering it. I know my strengths and weaknesses and I was frank to state my weaknesses and explained how I will over come them in my work place and all. I was asked a lot of questions and some times the interviewer twisted questions to see If I'm answering sincerely or just giving fake answers to the questions. This interview went so well that I was sure of my selection after this round.

And Interestingly, of the 27 members that were selected to 1st round of Interviews, I was 10th one as names were written alphabet wise. But I was the first one to be called out for 2nd round Interview.
Interview Tips
Be clear and Confident with your answers. Answer after thinking for a while, they won't expect instant answers. Remember what you have answered as they might ask the same question again and you might get caught answering differently ( This happens when you fake your experiences and answers). Be frank, Sincere. You know your strengths and try to state your strengths to them (They might not ask you to say your strengths, you have to include them in some answers). Think different and answer in a way that most others won't.
Round 4

Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: How can you fit in our work environment ?
  • Question 2: Why EXL?
  • Question 3: Job or MBA ?
Interview Experience
As I was confident of my selection after 2nd round of Interview, I stuck to my plans and answered well. I think this round was just to see If I would Join the company or not.
Interview Tips
Stick to what you have answered earlier, they might compel you to change your answers just to see If you are confident with your answers. Remember that Raju's Interview in 3 Idiots ? He will be asked to be more diplomatic but he rejects that Idea .. My Interview was also similar.
Skills

Skills Tested

Skill Tips
Answers which you read in internet are not your experiences, so they aren't to be copied. Assess yourself and your answers have to reflect your experiences. I didn't prepare anything for Campus placements as I was confident of my skills. I took time in analyzing myself and the way in which I have to project myself in Interviews. I didn't prepare for GD's and PI's .

EXL Service Consultant 1 interview

I was interviewed on-campus at IIT Madras for Consultant 1 role at EXL Service
Interview Process
Test Puzzle Interview Technical + HR Interview
Round 1

Test

No. of Questions
30 questions
Interview Experience
Quickly sped through the test since I had enough aptitude practice. Left only one question unanswered
Interview Tips
Practice aptitude (absolutely crucial, no other way around this)
The website pariksha.co would be a good place to start.
Also very important to have attempted enough mock aptitude tests to see how much of a chance you stand amongst your peers
Round 2

Puzzle Interview

Interview Experience
Started off with the standard 'tell me about yourself' question and 'Why analytics?'.
Then we moved on to a simple case. I had to put myself in the shoes of a supermarket owner having only one billing counter. I had to list down all possible factors that could possibly influence me into setting up more billing counters (say 3 or 4 more counters). I listed a powerful factor right off the bat. I then had to take a little guidance from the interviewer (who was very friendly btw) who helped me arrive at 3 more factors.
Then we moved on to the puzzle. I had solved it long ago and had found its solution to be one of the least intuitive ones I had come across, I couldn't remember the solution though. So i started by explaining my logic. Then with a little bit of guidance, was able to arrive at the final answer.
Then he looked at my resume and found that I had mentioned some analytics project in it. He started grilling me on that. Since I wasn't conversant with the math behind one of the algorithms I had used, I wasn't able to answer questions on those. He then asked me questions on another algorithm which I was able to answer pretty well.
Then before finishing up, he invited questions. I asked some good questions which he was impressed by.
Interview Tips
Interviewers are pretty friendly and that helps vent out any pressure. Consider the interviews as friendly interactions rather than grilling sessions.
Have mock interviews with one of your friends on basic HR questions. It'll help build confidence as the day of the interview approaches
Round 3

Technical + HR Interview

Interview Experience
Started off with the interviewer asking why I wanted to get into EXL.
Then we moved on to the more technical part. He asked me which algorithms I was comfortable with. I mentioned neural networks as I was working on it as part of my Dual Degree Project. He then asked me some basic questions on neural networks (that also required some knowledge of the famous bias-variance concept) which I was able to answer pretty well.
He then moved on to questions from a course I had mentioned. We had some discussion on that question but I wasn't able to get to what he wanted to hear. But he left it at that and moved on to the next part.
Then I was asked which one I preferred more: working on projects that were hardcore technical data analysis, or rather qualitative business problems where you derive insights qualitatively. I preferred the first one and said that. I was then asked what I would do if I was assigned projects of the second type, my reply to which the interviewer found convincing enough.
He then invited questions to wrap up the interview. My questions here were again very impressive I guess. This part actually constituted one-fourth of my interview time. We had discussions at length
Interview Tips
Again, do not let any pressure get to you. Interviewers from EXL might probably be one of the friendliest bunches you will ever come across.
Having those mock interviewers is crucial in building confidence
One thing I forgot to mention - they will test if you're someone who is planning to go for higher studies or MBA or something else of the sort. So, if you are planning to do that, make sure you have a good answer to convince them you're not going to ditch them

  • indiabix.com,
General Tips
Take the interview in the direction where you want. Tell them your interest right at the start, so that they can grill you on that only. There were no questions on minor training or projects. There was nothing on technical part as well. Throw in your AIEEE/JEE MAINS/Advanced rank, that was the time when you were at your best and it may escape you out of the problem. It did in my case. He started grilling me on my low CGPA (lowest out of selected candidates), low 12th%, I just threw my AIEEE rank and I was placed.
Funny Moments
Well there were many.

During the first HR interview, they asked me why do you want to join a consultancy company when you are an engineer? I said, engineers can do anything and why do you visit our campus when you want consultants.

Test Case Study Interview Puzzle Interview HR Interview
Round 1

Test

Interview Experience
It was not that difficult and so the cut offs were high. I started the  quant preparation from RS Agarwal (found it too repetitive so stopped  midway) and started with Arun Sharma(first 2 levels of few important  topics like logical reasoning and statistics).Always target to be in the top  so that you have your interviews early because last year the hiring team were in a hurry and so they rushed with the interviews of later part students. Few people call these LUCK FACTORs.
Interview Tips
Remember the imp. topics would be Probability, Statistics ,Work-Time.
Round 2

Case Study Interview

Interview Experience
Questioned me about my college activities , few common puzzles and then came the most interesting part. They gave me a case study based on sports since I had mentioned my interests. It had to do with probability, Bayes Theorem and logic...sum real bad logic...I liked this  even though I had no basic idea of how to start with this .It was as if He was teaching me there itself on these .We discussed a lot-almost 20  minutes on this .At times he used to stress out few questions and I had to ensure that I stayed firm with my answers. They try to confuse you. You just keep smiling and be firm with your answers. Stay damn confident with yours. Then he moved onto another case study wherein I had to list all types of data to be collected , decisions to be made if I were to start an ice-cream shop in a famous shopping mall. It was a discussion wherein I needed to justify my decisions on how to make maximum profits in any situation. Took almost 45 minutes to come out
Round 3

Puzzle Interview

Interview Experience
This one was with a very cool person who continuously kept on offering me Oreo biscuits  This round had to do with puzzles which you will find in How to Ace the BrainTeaser (I don’t recollect which were the puzzles). I could answer 3 of the 5 asked. Then he moved to C programming. Asked me to write code to print few patterns , optimize them further and that was it. Took hardly 20 minutes for this round.
Round 4

HR Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR
Interview Experience
He started with questions like Why Data analytics ? Where could this field be used ?(almost everywhere-just for facts : almost every top IT firm especially the banking firms are having a data analytics team) We had discussions on different topics that he raised. One of them which I remember is: Suppose one of the hospitals in your city has been having an increasing number of patients, then please quote the possible factors leading to the ill-health of the citizens. How to ease the different issues in medical field using data analysis? It was just a discussion and I was quite sure that he liked my points.I also asked him about how to utilize this field of data analysis to improve the current business markets of India and how differently did countries like USA used data for business than in INDIA. Overall this was an interactive session. He kept me busy and I also did keep him busy answering my questions. This might have lasted for 40 minutes and then it was all over

Case Study Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: If your friends wants to open up a barber shop in the area you live, what are the prospects?
Interview Experience
The panel was of one person. It lasted for 20 minutes. He asked the place I belonged too. I answered Delhi and then he went straight on to the case that if my friends wants to open up a barber shop in the area I live, what are the prospects. It was pretty open ended and could be taken anywhere. Was trying to see if I can bring in all factors or not. Then regarding one of the competitions I participated in, he asked me to list three and just 3 factors which can summarize my solutions. This king of bullet-ed answering is generally expected from consultants and maybe that’s why he asked such a question.
Round 4

Stress Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: A general puzzle question
Interview Experience
The panel was of one person. He asked me a puzzle and said if I know it already I should tell him. I didn’t know it so he proceeded. Then he went out of the room saying he doesn’t want an answer, he just wants to discuss the puzzle with me and will be back in 5 mins. He came 5 mins later and started circling around me in the interview room and asked what I had to say regarding the question. I told him what I could figure out and then he started helping me in where I was stuck. He constantly kept circling around me. Probably was trying to build up stress. Finally together we arrived at the answer and he was happy after that and let me go.

Skill Tips
If you have done some data processing project before, that gives something to talk about in your interview.
General Tips
1. Keep yourself calm in the interview even if you don’t know something. Smile and say that you don’t know is the best way.

2. Stress interviews might be there, you panic and you are out. That’s something not expected from you under pressure.

3. Participating in competitions held at the time of placements is a good idea to know about the company as well about your preference regarding the company. The problem statements are a good insight into the actual problems companies deal with.

4. Be focused on the kind of companies you want to go for. Even at the stage of application, it's good to remove some companies from your wishlist based on your interest and capability to avoid confusion and disappointment in the end.
