  • Question 2: Tell me about yourself
  • Question 3: Why consulting?
Round 2

Case Study Interview

Interview Questions
  • Question 1: Estimate the number of garbage trucks in Hyderabad
Interview Experience
I started with the area of Hyderabad ~600km2. I made assumptions with respect to the area an average garbage truck could cover. Normally garbage trucks collect garbage from across the place and then go to the dumping ground and dump the garbage and then they may make another trip. Let’s say an average garbage truck works for about 8-9 hours and makes 2 trips in a day. And in one trip it can cover 2 km2, and then based on 2 trips a day, it should cover 4 km2. So approximately 150 trucks for households. The interviewer hinted to me that the number seems to be quite less and asked me to try again with some other approach. This time I started with the number of households. So Hyderabad has a population of 4mn and with 4 people per households, we have ~1mn households. Now these households are mostly spread in the form of apartments/ localities, comprising of ~100 Households per locality, giving me 10000 localities. It would take ~1 hour per locality, so an average truck considering it has to dump the garbage as well, should cover maximum 6/7 localities in a day. So there should be ~1500 garbage trucks serving Hyderabad households. The interviewer then questioned me about other factors which would determine the number of trucks. I listed down a few factors like: concentration of households in different areas, location of corporates especially hotels and restaurants, festive or marriage seasons, and distance or proximity to the dumping grounds. Distance was the factor he was mainly looking for.
Interview Tips
The interviewer was concentrating more on the approach I was using, rather than the exact numbers. Also, he was looking at how I can think about other factors which could alter the result of guesstimate

Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
Fundae session by seniors and a resume workshop by some company. Also, sent resume to some seniors for their opinions and I think this was an important part of it.
Interview Tips
I suggest Pre-placement talks, are a must. What is more important is not to believe the PPTs completely and ask seniors about the level of fundaes (finance/tech/otherwise) and preparation required to crack the company. There is a lot of good material on ATKEARNEY and other website. Other than that I used the material available for years.
Round 2

Interview

Interview Experience
Final offers in my division were 12. There were two levels of case interviews. The first interview was to judge if I would be suitable for the Strategy and Operations profile or for the Technology and Integration profile. There were two interviewers. They explained to me both the profiles and asked me what I wanted to choose and why. Then asked me some general HR questions like why consulting, why you etc. Then started off with an informal case study. It was about a new company which wanted to start a new low cost airline and had no experience in this market till now. It has two options: either to acquire an existing company or to build up all processes on their own. I was first asked to qualitatively mention what all aspects I would consider. After that they asked me what new things could this company do. They were pretty satisfied with my answers and I was confident of getting listed in the next round. In the next round there was single interviewer who was looking quite senior. Asked some HR questions. One case study about a consumer durables dealer which was again qualitative. Asked some HR questions that's it.
General Tips
Lack of interaction with seniors throughout IIT stay was one thing for which I had to pay. I had no seniors in my wing and I had no fundae of the amount of preparation required.

So make sure that you have certain information.

Resume Shortlist HR Interview Case Study Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
Collected all my certificates I received in school and IIT. Went through the resumes of my seniors with similar credentials to check how people have presented their positives. Went through a guide saying Do's and Don ts of a Resume. Consulted my seniors and incorporated their valuable points. I attended PPTs. They are very useful as they tell us about the company, the job profile and other useful information required. All the doubts about the company or the profile can be cleared at this time. I did talk to the employees of the company (mostly last years) to get better info about the company and the job.
Round 2

HR Interview

Interview Experience
Test and then 2 rounds of interview. For the first round of interview around 60-70 people were shortlisted, for second round 25(approx.) and finally 14 offers were made. It was a general HR interview. The interview started with an informal introduction about the people in the panel. Actually the interview was for 2 profiles 1. Technical 2. Associate Analyst. In this first interview they wanted to know the profile for which the candidate was more suitable. In the panel there were two people, one from Tech. and other from non-Tech. I don't remember much but they surely did ask about my perspective about technology and which profile I want to enter and why? They asked me a guesstimate and it is important that you use paper while solving such a problem. I think the best part about the interview was I was myself and they liked they I was. In fact after the interview I was sure that they'll call me for the next round.
Interview Tips
I think you should be good in case study problems and he should really be interested in consulting. You might not be the best but if you can show how passionate you are about your work, it is enough. I think if you really feel of joining a profession in consulting then you should go for it.
Round 3

Case Study Interview

Interview Experience
In my final round, he asked me to run through my resume and life in IIT. There I had to perform a small drama for him. Then there was a case study problem where he was looking for my approach and I guess he liked it, that's why I got recruited.
General Tips
Most important thing I realized in my first interview is that when you are going for an interview you are going to be recruited and if that is true then you need to be sure if you want to enter the company. I mean prepare well, this includes:The general questions which are asked in any HR interview. Prepare every minor thing about resume. Think about the doubts you have about the company or the job and clear them when the interviewer gives you the chance. Be yourself in the whole process and just have confidence nobody can stop you.

Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Tips
An FMCG intern certainly helps! Try to diversify your profile as much as possible, while maintaining a good GPA (cannot stress enough on this fact).
Round 2

Case Study Interview

Interview Experience
First case interview is certainly nerve-wracking. And if the interviewer decides to give you a hard time (often happens), the most important thing is to not lose your cool.
Interview Tips
Practice makes a man perfect. I practiced more than 30 cases myself in addition to the many I observed as a spectator. However, the cases which you face on Placement Day are bound to be different from what you practice. Often, you are left with no framework to work with.
Round 3

Interview Experience
Most HR interviews I faced focused on my CV.
Interview Tips
Keep calm, and know your CV inside out! Be prepared to be grilled on every aspect.
