Skill Tips
For Cisco,CGPA is a very important criteria.a friend of mine was rejected just coz of his low cgpa. lucky for me when Cisco came, there were not many high ptr fundoos around. read well.i am good at ds,os ,networking.so understand ur strengths. For os read Galwin and refer uresh walia(unix )[everything i answered regarding os,is mentioned there] or bash for networking prefer ferozeon. but whatever u read ,read with dedication and be clear.Beware:they will try to confuse u. learn about cloud computing and stuff..only abt their use, etc. be patient. I always thought "mera number kab ayega". though my air AIEEE rank was 500+(5th in my clas)..my cgpa was low.. the recruiters clearly felt our CG's were low. at first they wanted to shortlist based on CGPA. I thought I lost another company on cgpa shortlisting basis. but at the final moment they changed their mind, and though over 7.5 were only 15 cse students..they didnt reduce the cutoff.CISCO cares for cgpa.if urs is low, try to defend urself by showing good grades in subjects they require like networking,ds,os,etc. questions asked to others: how hub functions?(must be sure of hubs, switches, bridges, gateways and their differences) how to ensure compiler optimizes inline functions every time(may be using #pragma) learn about DBX debuggers, epilogue in functions(advanced compiler stuff). activation records, AVL trees, SPLAY trees, use of Fibonacci heaps in Djstras(read weiss carefully) For other companies plzz dont ignore these things virtual functions(a   must   for   ECE   guys polymorphism, inheritance)   refer   "LET   us   learn   c++ (yashwant   khanitkar VIRTUAL functions chapter..and *this,Vtable,vptr..for full clarity) PAGING(page table types, page faults, thrashing) they ask about LOW pass filters, etc read morris  mano..brush up some concepts..coz for PD(platform dependant jobs)knowledge of hardware(ECE) can be a criteria. i didnt get into Qualcomm, citrix, etc(all related to networking )..but finally got my dream job. lessons to learn from me.. take resume(hard copy)..reason for not getting into qualcomn. so take care of little things.

If everyone try to speak making fish market then just keep on speaking "friends please calm down, it's getting fish market. try to speak one at a time. plz friends plz"4. If someone wants to talk but not getting chance then raise your voice n say "plz, one of our friend also want to share something"n then point your hand towards him (not finger)5. Try for start and summarise (yes for both) if not possible them minimum secondly.I really used this at last n got placed on same day. I edited my resume n entered like "Completed Basic Course of Art Of Living (this was fake), Certified course of discover yourself (i had certificate)" and i was asked about that only in interview and got selected in CisCo....BEST OF LUCK (with confidence)

Interview Process
Test Interview Interview
Round 1

Test

Interview Experience
I studied c, data structures since it is compulsory for most of the companies. Went through one or two previous years papers in the placement web site. Just before the day of the test I went through the digital and microprocessor basics.

There were two profiles; Software and Hardware. We had an option to write both the tests, so i took the software and then hardware (I was not at all serious about hardware). The aptitude section was common to both the profiles, which is comparatively easy. Some questions were repeated from the previous year’s question paper which was given in the placement website. The questions in software profile included digital, microprocessor basics and some general networking and operating systems qns. As I remember correct, surprisingly there were no C, Data structure questions. But it is always better to expect c, data structures in every placement test you write. In networking, IP address related questions are so common that you will find it everywhere.
Round 2

Interview

Interview Experience
1st round: was everything based on your resume. If you can impress them in your first round, you are half way through. They started from simple questions but finally ended up in my research work. I had to defend my work like anything.

2nd work: Puzzles, C, data structures: It was the simplest round. They look at the way you think.

3rd round: Networking basics questions. Some of the candidates did not have this round. It could perform only in an average level in this round (may be below average too :)). I think they do not expect much of the networking knowledge from you. Otherwise I wouldn't have got through.
Round 3

Interview

Interview Experience
No worries in this round. Be yourself and answer naturally. They asked something like if a conflict comes, how do you deal with it? etc.
Skills

Skills Tested

Skill Tips
The presence of mind and the way you defend your project is very important. I mentally prepared on how to present my research work and projects. Networking basics. I stayed calm.<br /> <br /> Prepare C, data structure foe all companies. Communication Network helped a bit in networking.Common subjects will help in QUALCOMM and Broadcom. If you are aspiring for finance companies, prepare IMO questions.

Skill Tips
I have no idea on how they shortlisted students for written test. For the interview, it was based upon our written <br /> test performance. Since they came on day 3, they had a waiting list of students for the interview.<br /> <br /> <br /> Started solving previous year question papers. Almost all companies follow the same pattern which they had in the previous years. You might even get the same questions. Start solving puzzles and previous year question papers from August. There would be flurry of companies coming for CS and it would be very difficult if one starts preparing late. Earlier the preparation the better.<br /> <br /> Important for CS students: C, C++, Data structures and Algorithms, OS. <br /> <br /> Few companies ask students to write programs on paper. The best way to prepare would be start solving <br /> programming questions.

Cisco Systems NA interview

AnonymousFresherSelected
Application
I was interviewed on-campus for NA role at Cisco Systems
Interview Process
Resume Shortlist Test HR Interview Technical Interview
Round 1

Resume Shortlist

Interview Experience
I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I varied my areas of interest (mentioned in the resume) apart from my course depending upon the companies.
Round 2

Test

No. of Questions
50 questions
Interview Experience
Initially there was written test which consisted of two sections each of 25 questions. In first section there were aptitude questions and in second section there were programming based questions which mainly dealt with C++ and microprocessor. They had written the codes and we were asked to find the output. The questions were mainly from pointers and classes. No questions were asked from Data Structures.
Round 3

HR Interview

Interview Experience
They went through my resume, perhaps they wanted to know whether my actual interest lies in IT industry or not. Initially they mainly concentrated on my personal stuffs, hobbies as they wanted to check my dedication. They asked me why I wanted to join an IT company. I told them that right from my childhood I had an interest in computers and I think I was able to convince them. Then they asked me to write a program related to linked list which consisted of the operations like ‘inserting a node’, ‘deleting a node’ and other functions of the linked lists. I did not write the whole program, just wrote a linked list program and showed the important functions they asked and verbally told them some of the functions.
Round 4

Technical Interview

Interview Experience
In the second round of interview there were technical questions. An example of the question asked was ‘if I wanted to maintain a data structure in which I had to figure out in a team of 11 such players who has scored maximum runs among ’x’ no. of players so which sort of data structure could be used to create such a program.’ I answered them that there is a heap or tree having the same functionality. There are two types of heap sort minimum and maximum. In the minimum heap sort the minimum node is placed at the top of the tree and vice versa in case of maximum. So basically the question was based on heap sort. They asked me questions related to coding and basic computer operations like how does the computer start and what is the inside operation going on at the time of starting – I was asked to explain all of these. Then there was a long discussion on operating systems and then they asked me how to control a resistor using C++ – this I could not answer. They also asked me a puzzle – if a rope takes 1 hour to burn completely then how would I find that 20 minutes have elapsed if I have two similar ropes. So, in all it was a very good experience for me.
Motivation for applying
I came to know about the company through the placement cell. The presentation given by the company during the pre-placement talk was the first source of information for me.

I made some guesses . Told me to implement Levenshtein distance .Asked me to design a unique identifier number . I used diffrnt things to make it unique but he was nt impressed . Finally he gave me hint : ”The thing which never comes back when we loose it ” . I answered TIME . So basically he wanted  me to use time for making number unique .You have to design a LRU CACHE such that all operations can be done in O(1) – read, write and insert . No code just algo n DS to be used .An array(sorted ) is rotated , write a function which takes an input array and returns the no. of times an array has been rotated .

Skills Tested

Skill Tips
Watched a few mock interviews (Youtube / other websites). I also went through some books which covered common interview questions. Electives and course work details were not considered for shortlisting. My MS thesis is in the area of Wireless networking. It helped me to convince the interviewer why I was interested in working in a networking company.<br /> <br /> I initially focused on aptitude, then Programming / Algorithms and data structures.
General Tips
Two-Three weeks before the first placement test. For communication companies, I refreshed digital communication fundamentals. Basic of linear algebra and probability theory. Also, spent some time, studying the basics of data structures and algorithms.

One should be prepared to explain every detail in his/her resume. Most interviews start with the description of one's project work. For both core (communication) and non-core companies, programming concepts (C and data structures) are very important.
